Carney to Trump: Canada will "never be for sale"

President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met in person for the first time Tuesday and clashed over the president's ongoing rhetoric about making Canada the 51st state but maintained it wouldn't interfere with talks between the two countries.

"There are some places that are never for sale," Carney said moments after he arrived at the White House and adding of Canada, "It's not for sale, it won't be for sale ever."

Trump, meanwhile, couldn't resist needling his new counterpart. At times, Trump claimed annexation would be good for Canadians and added, "Never say never ... over time, we'll see what happens."

Carney is kind of a smart ass. When Trump said never say never, Carney turned the cameras and mouthed "never".

Carney stood up well to Trump but he did so in a way that didn't provoke an angry reaction as had happened with Zelensky.

The consensus from the political analysts is that Carney's handling of Trump was successful.

Here is David Pakman's analysis:

orange was all hunched over and grimacing in that meeting. he looked like a bum sitting on a park bench talking to himself.

In the most polite terms, he was told to fuck off.

"In the online survey of a representative national sample, only 26% of Canadians have a positive opinion of the United States, down 28 points since a similar Research Co. poll conducted in July 2024.

Only three other countries currently have a lower proportion of favourable views from Canadians: Russia (19%, +2), Iran (17%, +5) and North Korea (also 17%, +6)."

R3 Zelensky did nothing whatsoever to provoke the treatment he received. That was clearly planned before he arrived.
