As I mentioned a few times in the past, a friend of mine is the manager of an IHOP. The servers are trained about customers with food allergies as it is taken very seriously - if someone tells them they have a food allergy to a certain ingredient, the server has to enter this on the ticket when putting in their order, go back to the kitchen with a red marker and circle the 'warning' on the ticket printed out for the line cook, and then tell the cook directly what the allergy is - and none of the customer's food can come in contact with it. No exceptions - this is how it's done.
Do you think this is how it's done when placing an order at McDonald's, Burger King, Popeye's, KFC, etc. ? I'd like to know what those order takers do with the info once they're told their customer has a food allergy - do they print it on the order as 'food allergy' and go tell the fry cook ? Or do they just put in 'no onions' on the order and the customer hopes for the best?

A friend of mine is allergic to celery of all things. I didn't believe him until he had an anaphylactic reaction at the allergist. It is a thing for some people in areas of France and Switzerland. I think there are warning labels on products in Switzerland. He's very frightened about it, carries an epipen but doesn't eat out at all. I respect him for that. He'll go out but will just have a drink, never food. I think anyone with a serious food allergy shouldn't be putting the onus on the wait staff or restaurant.

When I worked at McDonald’s many moons ago, we didn’t take anywhere near that level of precaution with food allergy orders. But who knows what it’s like today.

Imagine DLers freaking out about being exposed to nuts. Heck, looking down would be a challenge.
