The Tony Awards just sent a clear message to Hollywood stars on Broadway
I love that they snubbed so many of these movie and tv stars. I remember stating it feels strange how many of these actors suddenly wanna do theatre, on Broadway in particular. It feels disingenuous, like they are only doing it in hopes to get a Tony and they feel being RDJ on Broadway guarantees a nomination.
Denzel is different as hes a theatre trained actor whose roots are in theatre. He’s done plays many times in the past. The others just want to win awards. That’s why so many of them are now producing plays too. Look at Tony winner Angelina Jolie. She would never star in a play because we would see how bad she is without the editing and many takes etc. so she attaches her name to a show and gets an award.
Soon we will see JLC doing a play.

Yet, he's the one out of all of them who has gotten the most criticism for his less than stellar portrayal of Othello.

He’s also the oldest and too old to be playing the role he is r1

I think this crowd is a bit more clear eyed about this. The success of a play is always a crap shoot.
The competition is never predictable really...there's always a dark horse. I think it's an overall plus to get audiences tuned in.
You may not pay 900 bucks to see Othello in NYC, but for a high schooler in the stix, they may go see a college production because Gyllenhall is involved.

What doesn't it have to do with the topic, R4?

At this point, I think Broadway should be more concerned with producing stuff that isn't remakes of movies or another revival of a Sondheim show.
That nominations list still isn't impressive.

Yet another terrible year for Bway theatre. Maybe they made a lot of money but most of it was boring or/and shit

Meanwhile the best play that deserves tons of nominations and Made TONS OF MONEY was off-Broadway

Bitter theatre queen has her panties in a bunch. They’re ACTORS for fuck’s sake. They aren’t allowed to do theatre?

Theatre is a completely different skill. Many actors from TV and Movies don’t do theatre with reason.
Not all acting nor actors are the same.

R3 I read about the exorbitant price for tickets for Othello. $900 fucking dollars? Hard pass. I don’t care about seeing Denzel and Jake that much. Denzel has already won once, and I really don’t think he cares at this point since he’s on the verge of retirement. Phoning it on Broadway if there is such a thing.

Othello snubbed completely. Fuck your exorbitant ticket prices, Cox was right.

Someone said if you do theatre is to do it for the love of art and acting, not for a large paycheck. Theatre doesn’t pay a lot. These movie stars wanting to do plays and get paid big bucks are RUINING theatre.

Brian Cox is just peeved because no one would ask him to do Broadway and certainly not at 900 a ticket. Maybe dinner theater.
Anyway his angling in on Denzel and not Clooney was ludicrous.

Clooney getting a nom is ludicrous. Isn't it the same role he had in the mediocre film version?

Denzel has a Tony.
What staggers me is that they nommed Clooney. He was merely fine. I can name half dozen actors who have been better.

George Clooney is about as Hollywood as you can get yet he was nominated.

He’s one of the few r19. The majority of them were snubbed. That’s the point. It didn’t say all of them were. But most were.

If they didn't there would be no recognizable names to publicize to America in order to get them to watch the show. Oh, the theater queens will watch, but the show needs non-theater goers to watch.

How do independent voters in an awards competition "snub" anyone?
Snub indicates deliberate omission.
The people/shows who didn't snag nominations all got mixed to poor reviews.
Othello got "snubbed" because it's not a good production.

George, Denzel and Jake, Kit Connor.... all are playing or played for sold out houses. Can't say the same for Audra. Big names attract audiences, which results in $$$$.

Whose run was sold out nightly? Do you think the audiences came to see Rachel Zegler? No one was comparing him to the others.

Are you the person who wrote that post? Are you trying to excuse your bad writing? You grouped Kit Connor with those other FAR more famous names with a Hollywood background which implied they were of the same calibre.
Kit Connor has been in ONE popular Netflix British TV show mostly seen by teens and gays. He's not anywhere close to being a "Hollywood" star at the same level as George, Denzel or Jake. For that matter, Rachel Zegler probaby has bigger name recognition than he does, just by being a problematic twat waffle.

There are no movie, TV, or stage actors, just actors of varying abilities and experience.
Whatever his theatical training I have no interest in seeing Denzel Washington's Othello, but if he puts asses in seats, more power to him.

The fact that Clooney has a Kennedy Center Honor and Liza doesn’t is a completely travesty.
I think Liza will get one this year because her documentary just came out. Everyone gets reminded of a star’s previous work through a documentary and then they get the KCH.
It recently happened that way to Dionne Warwick

[quote]Brian Cox is just peeved because no one would ask him to do Broadway
Brian Cox has done a ton of theatre, starting with a role in King Lear with Laurence Olivier and subsequently winning two Olivier awards. He made his Broadway debut in 1985 and has spent two seasons on Broadway since then, but most of his theatre has been in London. Unless musicals are your bag, why anyone would want to be on Broadway when you were in demand on the West End? Line up the recent Olivier Award noms for plays, and performances in plays, against the Tony noms and weep.
