Is there a program that chooses the room for them, or is it entirely up to the hotel employee to decide which room you'll get?
How does the front desk staff choose your hotel room?

As a frequent traveler with status in a few chains, I understand the staff go through the reservations deciding on an 'appropriate' room that morning.
Some advice: if you will be checking in much after 8PM, (20.00), be sure that "Hold for late arrival" is part of your reservation!

That's interesting. It's decided before you even get to the hotel. I wonder if the front desk staff have to ability to change a room.

They have a lot of leeway. My boyfriend works for Hyatt.

I worked for Marriott back in the day. Our system would randomly select a room based on room-type, but it could be over-ridden. If a customer was especially nice to me, they got an upgrade. If they were assholes, not so much.
