Man who confronted the teen who assaulted his daughter is beaten to death with a bat

54 year old Louis Serbeck died on Easter Sunday after being beaten to death with a bat, according to local authorities.

The confrontation stemmed from an incident that occurred one day earlier, when a minor male allegedly assaulted Serbeck's daughter.

Police have now arrested 55-year-old Eric Hannah and an unnamed 17-year-old boy identified as "J.H." on charges of homicide and weapons offenses, according to a news release from the prosecutor's office.

"J.H. is alleged to have struck Serbeck in the head several times with a metal baseball bat," the release states. "It is further alleged that Hannah, who was present and joined the fight, struck Serbeck in the back of the head with a metal flashlight."

[quote] Serbeck and his daughter went to speak with Hannah on April 20, according to the release.

[quote] The male teen met Serbeck at the door, and the release states that at some point the exchange between the two turned physical.

[quote] "J.H. is alleged to have struck Serbeck in the head several times with a metal baseball bat," the release states. "It is further alleged that [Hannah], who was present and joined the fight, struck Serbeck in the back of the head with a metal flashlight."

[quote] The release notes that J.H. "suffered facial injuries," and that he also struck Serbeck's daughter in the head with a bat.

[quote] Officers with the Vineland Police Department soon arrived on the scene along with emergency medical service workers.

[quote] After assessing Serbeck's injuries, EMS rushed him to the local hospital in Vineland, where he would receive a medical evacuation to Cooper Hospital in Camden, located approximately 40 miles north.

[quote] However, Serbeck died en route, according to the release.

[quote] A GoFundMe created in hopes of helping Serbeck's two surviving daughters pay for his funeral services has already exceeded its initial goal of $10,000.

[quote] The creator of that fundraiser describes Serbeck as the "bravest, caring, outgoing, warmhearted, funny, and most protective men to be known."

People nowdays are fucking crazy.

Never confront them on your own.

In a case like this, the dad should have contacted the police about the assault, and just let them handle it.

This is a refreshing change from the usual "Don't tell me they're _____" narrative usually brought up in such trash episodes.

Maybe DL has matured in the new Trump era?

[quote]Eric Hannah and an unnamed 17-year-old boy identified as "J.H."

Hmmmm. I wonder if the unnamed 17-year-old boy's last name could be Hannah?

by Anonymousreply 4May 2, 2025 8:09 AM

The Post, thank goodness, has no problem saying that JH is the son Jacob.

17 year old Jacob Hannah is decidedly not hot.

They even beat up the daughter.

Why would this pretty girl even think of going out with that violent slob at R7?

by Anonymousreply 12May 2, 2025 2:56 PM

R10 Serbeck or hannah are NOT Irish names u ignorant asshole.

by Anonymousreply 13May 2, 2025 3:02 PM

Toxicity all around. But the dead guy went over to their house in order to attack them and give them a physical beat down. And he started to. At that point, all bets are off. NJ doesn’t have a Florida style Stand Your Ground law but it won’t be hard to find a jury who acquits.

by Anonymousreply 14May 2, 2025 3:07 PM

Do U feel like an ignorant asshole now, r13?

[QUOTE]The surname Hannah is of Irish and Scottish origin, stemming from the Gaelic surname Ó hAnnaidh, meaning "descendant of Annach".

And the trashy behavior tracks. While "Culture of Honor" by Richard Nisbett was written about Southern Scots Irish, it applies.

by Anonymousreply 15May 2, 2025 3:17 PM

R14 the little POS beat the crap out of his daughter. No one gets two black eyes from "drunken antics". What, she walked into a door too many times? Sure, it wasn't the most responsible decision confronting him alone like that, but I can see many fathers responding (or at least wanting to respond) the same way. My sister was violently date raped in high school by an older guy, and when my father found out we had to beg him to not kill the man--like, he was trying to get a gun from a friend. And we were the farthest thing from "white trash".

by Anonymousreply 16May 2, 2025 3:20 PM

Violent psychopaths'll do that.

by Anonymousreply 17May 2, 2025 3:27 PM

I would hate to have a daughter. What a nightmare.

Broken people making more broken people.

by Anonymousreply 19May 2, 2025 3:43 PM

R16 who knows what’s true. The details (yeah I read the whole damn mess) have the dead dad’s daughter telling one story and the younger sister in the other family telling a totally different story saying it was the 19yo girl who was drunk and violent and refused to leave their house that night.

Good luck trying to find the truth when it goes to trial. Teenage girls are THE WORST at starting and fomenting conflicts and then putting out spin afterwards that claims only the other side is at fault.

by Anonymousreply 20May 2, 2025 3:52 PM

Oh, it happened in New Jersey? That explains everything. Trash central.

by Anonymousreply 21May 2, 2025 4:01 PM

The only surprise was that it didn't happen in Florida.

by Anonymousreply 22May 2, 2025 4:39 PM

As Betty Broderick once said (or we said she said it) If you don't want to dance, don't take me to the prom. Dad took the guy to the prom and he fucking well made him dance. Why was she spending the night, drunk, at her boyfriend's house? I agree with R20, teen girls really do do this, it's too bad. He should have called the cops. I believe it was probably the daughter, and the girl was mad because the boyfriend had her thrown out, so she made up a story and all this happened now. And of course the obligatory go fund me...it's how dumb people pay for things.

by Anonymousreply 23May 2, 2025 4:59 PM

[quote] In a case like this, the dad should have contacted the police about the assault, and just let them handle it.

Are you for real? And they would have done what?

by Anonymousreply 24May 2, 2025 5:05 PM

They would have NOT gotten him beaten to death, at least.

by Anonymousreply 25May 2, 2025 5:09 PM

R20 She was so drunk and violent she punched herself in both eyes? Spare me.

by Anonymousreply 26May 2, 2025 5:36 PM

R26 No, the sister of the guy she liked punched her. Read the article.

by Anonymousreply 27May 2, 2025 5:38 PM

R27 It said the sister punched her? That's not what I read. What I read was that according to the dead guy's daughter, the boyfriend beat her, and according to the boyfriend's sister, she said the girl did it herself due to "drunken antics".

by Anonymousreply 28May 2, 2025 5:45 PM

R28 it’s in the Post article. Not saying either side is 100% truthful but there are two extremely different tales being told, so how do we know. Some excerpts:

=======

But the Hannah family tells a vastly different side of things – claiming that Brooke’s bruises came from her own drunken antics, and that when she lied to her father about what happened he threw the first punch at the teen boy.

“This all started on Saturday at 3 in the morning,” said 14-year-old Alana Hannah, who said Brooke was hanging at their house with friends that night.

When the family tried to throw her out, Alana said Brooke started shoving people and pulling hair.

“So I punched her in the face,” Alana said, laying claim to the black eyes. “I honestly wouldn’t have punched her if she didn’t grab my hair, but she grabbed my hair, so I punched her.”

Brooke was eventually thrown out, Alana said, but the next day she showed up with her furious dad – who she said threw the first punch.

From there it devolved, Alana said, with her brother grabbing a bat to defend himself while Serbeck went for a length of pipe, the Hannah family claimed. The two circled and swung at each other in the yard – with Brooke even jumping in and pulling more hair, Alana added.

by Anonymousreply 34May 2, 2025 10:39 PM

Thank you R28. I'm R27, I knew I read that. So yeah, this chick is shitfaced at a boy's house (nice parenting) and I believe the sister that she was getting rambunctious and out of control. I don't believe a guy hit her, I believe the sister did it. And I think the girl was so mad that the guy didn't let her stay, and let his sis kick her out, that she told her dad it was him. I'm sure she never meant for all this to happen, she probably did want her dad to hit him though. I guess we'll never know, she'll never admit it now. I just don't see a high school kid punching a girl in the face, especially if she's not even his girlfriend or someone he is into.

by Anonymousreply 35May 2, 2025 11:08 PM

Shit, I meant R29 thank you for posting the blurb.

by Anonymousreply 36May 2, 2025 11:09 PM

Honestly I don't give a shit about the backstory, just the metal bat beating and the flashlight braining. Hope they both get life or fry

by Anonymousreply 37May 2, 2025 11:12 PM

I hope Daughter Dearest feels racked with guilt because her poor father lost his life over nothing. If she truly was assaulted by this boy and his family, she should have called the police. I don't know why some women want to put their male family members in such dangerous situations like this. She knew how violent the boyfriend was. If someone assaults you, call the police immediately. Now, her father is dead. This is such an awful situation all around but totally preventable. The fat greasy boyfriend with the baseball bat should be thrown under the jail. He's clearly unfit to be in society because he can't control himself. There are no winners here. One man lost his life and two more have lost their freedom.

by Anonymousreply 38May 2, 2025 11:18 PM

R35 “I do t see a high school kid punching a girl in the face”

Are you new to the planet and the horrible things people of all ages do to other people, especially women, every day?

by Anonymousreply 48May 3, 2025 12:36 AM

You can’t see a high school kid punching a girl in the face despite the fact that he bludgeoned a guy to death?

by Anonymousreply 55May 3, 2025 3:24 PM

[quote] Teenage girls are THE WORST at starting and fomenting conflicts and then putting out spin afterwards that claims only the other side is at fault.

yes, I am sure she is to blame. She must have given herself the black eyes and blamed it. Or else, she must have been asking for it!

by Anonymousreply 56May 3, 2025 3:28 PM

This isn't the 80s anymore.

You do not go over to someone's house to confront them about something like this. They could have had any weapon at their disposal and people are much crazier now than back then.

That's not excusing what the guy did, you just have to be safe.

Also, once you decide to beat someone up by hitting them in the head with a bat repeatedly then you are clearly trying to kill them. If they had of went for the legs or anywhere else that would imply they just wanted him to back off.

by Anonymousreply 57May 3, 2025 3:40 PM

R43 why do you trust the sister? What makes her more trustworthy than any other person in the story? Why would the dead man’s daughter lie about who punched her? To get back at the teenage boy for rejecting her? I doubt that. She was clearly out of his league looks wise.

it’s some major projection to read this case and jump to the conclusion that the dead man’s teenage daughter manipulated this whole situation, and not only that , to conclude that this teenager holds more responsibility in the situation than the people who swung the bat and flashlight, or the full grown man who initiated the confrontation

by Anonymousreply 58May 3, 2025 3:54 PM

[quote] If they had of went for the legs or anywhere else that would imply they just wanted him to back off.

"Gone for," not "had of went." Also, comma after the word "else." Also, "would have implied" instead of "would imply."

"If they had GONE FOR the legs or anywhere else, that would have implied ..."

by Anonymousreply 59May 3, 2025 6:44 PM

Yeah — they attacked him with intent to kill.

But it won’t be surprising if a jury acquits. Dead dad went to their house to start shit and beat up the son. He had a long history of beating people up and being proud of it. This wasn’t going to be a mere conversation on their doorstep.

by Anonymousreply 60May 3, 2025 6:51 PM

R57 Unfortunately you are absolutely right.

by Anonymousreply 61May 3, 2025 7:44 PM

R60 There is absolutely no chance for a self-defense plea at this point. The guy retreated back to his car to try and leave and they came after him again in the car, beating his head in with the flashlight. It's not self defense when the person is trying to get away.
