Kids are expensive.

There are too many variables. I’m guessing they are saying the oldest human would die before the youngest humans procreated. But that would take thousands of years. No way could we conjecture our current socio-political dealings for that time period. It’s impossible. We will be living so badly different even 100 yrs from now. Not just locally(nationally) but the entire globe. There is too much we can’t account for. Shit humans might be geniuses because of AI implanted in parts of their anatomy only 60 yrs from now.

Life might quickly return to subsistence, because farmers might simply not exist in the numbers needed to grow food for city populations.

I was a perceptive child. I have a clear memory of myself at around 9 or 10 as I quietly watched my parents perform the work of parenting. "I'm not sure I want this when I grow up.", I thought as I looked at my parents' stressed faces.

Fortunately, my mother was way ahead of her time. She told me that it's not required that humans have children. That was all it took to, on the spot, know my life was not going to include being a parent.

Conditioning and socialization to be a parent is strong and wrong. It shouldn't be expected and because too many humans are just plain bad parents.

Not mine. Did they make painful mistakes with their children? Of course, but dammit I was raised right because they put the work in and, unlike today's parents, mine knew us kids weren't their peer.

Yes, Musk is odious, and total extinction is a long way off, but the precursors of that extinction are arriving or already here. The whole idea of retirement and pensions is founded on growing populations. The challenges of having enough people to care for the elderly and the dwindling working populations to fund pensions and social security are already here. For the moment they can be solved by higher taxes and immigration, which, of course, people like Musk oppose, but there will come a day when those remedies won't suffice.

In general, I welcome the decline in human population for both ecological and humanitarian reasons (human life isn't really a picnic), but it's naive to think the path to human extinction won't entail a great deal of unpleasantness.

I have never heard anyone base their worries about the birth rate on lack of personal care for the elderly. That is as relatively small concern or no concern at all. The problem is that there will be a very small working population to support the pensions, social security and nursing home care of the elderly, as well as grow the food, fly the planes, etc., etc. Young people provide that without any altruistic motivation whatsoever. They provide it as part of earning their living. When there are few young people doing those things it is a huge and general problem.

Immigration is a partial solution, but it makes no sense to look at one extremely narrow facet of the aging population and say it's no big deal.

It seems as neither the young men or women are anxious to marry or have children. The heterosexual young people aren't even interested in sex!

Life in rich western countries has kind of maxed out quality-wise. Food and goods are plentiful and we live in abundance. The primary and logically moral goal of such a society should be to spread that wealth to all humans in some form or another, like Star Trek eventually. But we don’t do that for silly, commonly known reasons, and now that same attitude has destroyed even USAID in its lust for centralization of power. That same greedy, dehumanizing attitude has wrecked the dating market and every other form of human competition.

Everybody knows that and lives with it and life goes on, but I think it’s been subconsciously sinking birthrates for decades now. We know in our gut that the world isn’t getting better. Life has mostly peaked and is now rolling off because true wealth is mostly zero sum and is only ever getting funneled upwards.
