Robert De Niro's child comes out as transgender woman after starting HRT treatment

In a heartfelt interview, Airyn De Niro opened up about her transition, offering a glimpse into the complexities of identity and the power of self-discovery.

Robert De Niro's child, Airyn, 29, has publicly identified as a transgender female, sharing her journey in the hopes of inspiring queer women of colour.

Previously known as Aaron Kendrick De Niro, Airyn was born on October 20, 1995, alongside her twin, Julian Henry Deon, to Robert De Niro and his former partner, Toukie Smith, during their relationship from 1988 to 1996. In her first interview following the start of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) last November, Airyn expressed that witnessing other trans women being “honest and open” online made her realise it was not “too late” for her to embrace her true self.

HRT plays a significant role in the transition process for many transgender individuals, as it involves administering hormones to help align physical characteristics with one's gender identity.

Speaking to Them magazine, Airyn said she wanted to address her transition publicly for one specific reason: “There's a difference between being visible and being seen. I don't think I've been seen yet.”

Airyn, who came out as a gay man while in high school, said she never felt as though she fit in.

“I was always told I was too much of something or not enough of something growing up: Too big, not skinny enough. Not Black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, not masculine enough. It was never just, ‘You're just right, just the way you are.’

And trans is going to make this better?

He was a decent looking kid - he just needed to go to the gym and workout.

by Anonymousreply 3April 30, 2025 8:37 PM

Trans will not make this better. You don’t have to look far to see the complications from botched operations these days.

He’s in his late 20’s so you’d think he was mature enough not to take these kids on TikTok so seriously.

by Anonymousreply 4April 30, 2025 8:48 PM

Oh do trans people not feel like they fit in after they try to fit in?

If only people would just accept them. If only they would just accept them they could finally fit in.

by Anonymousreply 5April 30, 2025 8:56 PM

Airyn's paternal grandfather was gay.

Thank God women don't have to go through any of these struggles. Women always feel just right the way that they are - they never think they're too fat, not proportioned right, hair isn't right, makeup not right, skin not right, too short or too tall, etc. They're never criticized online about their looks or clothes or are judged by others.

What a relief he will feel! Right ladies? Right?

De Niro now has a trans son and a violently autistic son, plus he just had a chinese baby girl 2 years ago at the ripe age of 79. What a bizarre family

by Anonymousreply 8April 30, 2025 9:22 PM

Airyn keeps autocorrecting to Airbnb for me.

by Anonymousreply 9April 30, 2025 9:38 PM

Git 'em!!

by Anonymousreply 10April 30, 2025 9:38 PM

Is she appropriating a non-binary name?

by Anonymousreply 11April 30, 2025 9:39 PM

Airyn’s maternal uncle the talented designer Willi Smith was gay.

by Anonymousreply 12April 30, 2025 9:39 PM

With that pink hair, they should have stayed at non-binary. I thought that was closely associated with the pink and blue hair genes.

by Anonymousreply 13April 30, 2025 9:46 PM

I never fit in either, I still love my dick.

by Anonymousreply 14April 30, 2025 9:54 PM

You can be sure Airyn loves hers too

by Anonymousreply 15April 30, 2025 9:59 PM

What percentage of trans women would you guess are happier, more content, satisfied, more at peace with, etc. after the transition?

I'd say much less than half.

by Anonymousreply 16April 30, 2025 10:04 PM

I never fit in [italic]anywhere[/italic]. I'm not a typical lesbian, hell -- I 'm not a typical [italic]anything[/italic]. I never have been.

But I sure as fuck ain't a man trapped in a woman's body.

by Anonymousreply 17April 30, 2025 10:30 PM

She looks to have Peter Pan Syndrome. Wants to be a young hipster chic forever. Reminds me of Elliot Page who seems to want to be a scater boy for life.

Has she finished college? Grad school? Has a job? A career?

All the life energy going into her superficial look and gender explorations? Le snore.

by Anonymousreply 18April 30, 2025 10:44 PM

Who needs to talk to an actual trans person when we have r16's baseless speculation?

by Anonymousreply 19April 30, 2025 10:45 PM

Transgender self identity is highly associated with neurodivergence and DeNiro already has an autistic son. Both this child and the transgender daughter were fathered by him after he turned fifty.

It’s not rocket science.

by Anonymousreply 20April 30, 2025 10:48 PM

Guess he’s no longer a goodfella.

by Anonymousreply 21April 30, 2025 10:53 PM

Where is Airyn's mom, Toukie? I always liked her. She seemed cool.

by Anonymousreply 22April 30, 2025 11:42 PM
he just had a chinese baby girl 2 years ago at the ripe age of 79.

It's time he stopped slinging that geriatric sperm.

by Anonymousreply 23April 30, 2025 11:54 PM

"He had a chinese girl"? Where did he get a chinese girl? Does he still have her or what? Is the girl still chinese?

by Anonymousreply 24May 1, 2025 12:00 AM

Oh for fuck sake, the transceleb kids craze is over.

Grow the fuck up, spend that trust fund and be a gay man.
Too big, not skinny enough. Not Black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, not masculine enough.

Bet nobody mentioned "not enough of a pretentious twat" though.

by Anonymousreply 26May 1, 2025 12:01 AM

The original interview was in "Them," which probably upped the pretentiousness quite a bit.

by Anonymousreply 27May 1, 2025 12:26 AM
“I was always told I was too much of something or not enough of something growing up: Not Black enough, not white enough.

Nothing makes me roll my eyes harder than when I hear biracial people say self-absorbed and self pitying shit like this. There's no such thing as "black enough" or "white enough." You're a human being for Chrissake. Everyone gets 50 percent DNA from each parent, and if you have two parents of two different races, then it makes you biracial. It's not rocket science. Stop whining and get over yourself.

by Anonymousreply 28May 1, 2025 12:31 AM

As a biracial person, I do feel that way. People get mad when they can’t put you in a box. Some biracials say that shit for attention @R28

by Anonymousreply 29May 1, 2025 12:42 AM
Nothing makes me roll my eyes harder than when I hear biracial people say self-absorbed and self pitying shit like this.

The fact that you've heard biracial people talk about this often enough to prompt an eye roll shows that this is an experience that a fair number of biracial/mixed-race people share. You can roll your eyes harder, but there's sociological research into the specific challenges of growing up mixed race, there are social groups where mixed-race people interact because they have certain experiences in common... Why dismiss people's personal experiences outright?

"Not black enough" and "not white enough" are not to be taken literally: it just means that many mixed-race people do not feel fully embraced or accepted by either community. It happens.

by Anonymousreply 31May 1, 2025 4:08 AM

I smell a comedy with Jamie Lee Curtis, Robert De Nero and their trans kids. My Girls perhaps? A reimagining of My Girl.

by Anonymousreply 32May 1, 2025 4:14 AM

I wonder if other mixed race people (white/asian or white/latin) have that issue.

by Anonymousreply 33May 1, 2025 4:17 AM

Many trans are on the spectrum. Many geriatric fathers have children on the spectrum.

This isn't that surprising. Paul Mccartneys kid is trans too, he was also a geriatric father.

by Anonymousreply 34May 1, 2025 4:36 AM

Guruuurrlll, you talking’ to me? Bee-yotch!

by Anonymousreply 35May 1, 2025 5:06 AM

R34 also, De Niro and Jamie Lee Curtis are "woke" progressives and most trans kids derive from liberal households and rarely from conservative homes, which is curious.

I mean, look at gays/lesbians, who come from both Republican and Democratic homes.

But trans/nonbinaries are mostly seen coming from the left and being raised by ACTORS.

by Anonymousreply 36May 1, 2025 5:08 AM

Just as well Tony Soprano was aced before he had to deal with this.

I think the statement about not every feeling right - not white enough, masc enough, black enough, fem enough, etc. is very telling.

Feels like a "I don't like who I am and feel like I'm doing things wrong - let me just be somebody totally different".

As if being trans is going to magic wand erase these issues. I sincerely believe SOME of these people transition as a 'reset' button - and to be somebody completely different. It's self-hate.

by Anonymousreply 50May 1, 2025 3:50 PM

R50 Maybe chopping off your magic wand does the trick. 🤷‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 51May 1, 2025 3:52 PM

R36 "trans...rarely from conservative homes, which is curious"

Ahem!!!!

by Anonymousreply 52May 1, 2025 5:44 PM

Caityn a) came out at 65, so the kind of home in which s/he was raised is irrelevant; and b) is an autogynephile, which is nothing like Gen Z trans kids and comes with its own package of weirdness

by Anonymousreply 53May 1, 2025 6:00 PM

R53 Caitlyn should be in a home...

by Anonymousreply 54May 1, 2025 6:04 PM

When your parent is as famous as DeNiro (or even Jamie Lee Curtis), it's inevitable that you're going to have identity issues.

Your entire life you would have been seen as merely an extension of your famous parent, not as an independent individual.

Add to that bad parenting and being raised by someone who by definition is likely a narcissist and attention seeking, and you have a perfect storm of crazy.

by Anonymousreply 55May 1, 2025 6:13 PM

'Airyn' 🤣🤣

by Anonymousreply 56May 1, 2025 7:29 PM

Being trans is one thing, but not being comfortable in any identity is a lot messier still. His mom, dad, friends, didn't comfort him in the knowledge that he was fine as his unique self? I can't really imagine someone growing up in his privilege being bred to have zero self worth and no sense of sure and valued identity. Maybe much of this is hard wiring waiting for the trigger to make a mess out of a now not so young life. It seems heavy.

by Anonymousreply 57May 1, 2025 9:32 PM
I can't really imagine someone growing up in his privilege being bred to have zero self worth and no sense of sure and valued identity.

There could still have been parental emotional neglect and resulting feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. Material wealth and privilege don't always shield you from those things.

Gen Z/Millenials give so much importance to labels and gender that they automatically think adopting one will change their lives. It's quite sad.

by Anonymousreply 62May 2, 2025 2:37 AM

I would love to understand the thought process here. “I’m a reasonably attractive guy, but my life would be much easier if I pumped myself full of hormones, chopped my dick off, and ended up looking like that guy from Twisted Sister with a need to dilate.

by Anonymousreply 63May 2, 2025 4:12 AM

“I’ll finally get the straight guy that was never attracted to me before!” <— Something like that, R63
