Why is there never anything good to watch?

We have DirecTV, Prime, Netflix, Max, AppleTV, and Paramount.

I can not find any new shows or movies worth watching. So I actually watch Tubi for free as well as episodes of shows I bought:; Golden Girls, Frazier, Seinfeld, Friends.

How can there be NOTHING?

by Anonymousreply 42May 24, 2025 5:36 AM

If you have Paramount, try [italic]Mobland[/italic], starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosan, Paddy Considine and Helen Mirren. It's about London mobs dealing with lose cannons in their midst.

by Anonymousreply 1April 30, 2025 12:12 AM

OP types like a helpless, complaining nag. Just kill yourself OP.

by Anonymousreply 2April 30, 2025 12:18 AM

I look at metacritic to find new shows.

by Anonymousreply 3April 30, 2025 12:20 AM

You sound like me just before I canceled cable in 2007.

by Anonymousreply 4April 30, 2025 12:23 AM

I have all the premium channels plus Prime, Shudder, Hulu, Tubi, and Netflix. I usually end up watching movies on YouTube or rent new releases on Prime.

I spend all that money and there's nothing to watch. I feel your pain, OP.

by Anonymousreply 5April 30, 2025 12:24 AM

If you have Paramount, watch The Offer, a one-series dramatization (with comedy) of the making of The Godfather. It's a few years old now but it's a little gem.

The problem with Netflix is that they release a constant gush of new shows, nearly all of which are comfort viewing at best, so it's like being at the beach and being constantly flattened by new waves. But there are a great many good shows on there, it's just that many are older and you have to know what you're looking for. Have you seen Jonathon Groff and Anna Torv in Mindhunter, for example? Phoebe Waller Bridge's earlier show Crashing?

by Anonymousreply 6April 30, 2025 12:39 AM

I watch YouTube 90% of the time for this reason.

This has also had the unintended side effect of reducing my attention span to an average of 10 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 7April 30, 2025 12:41 AM

No. It's not even good-bad. Helen Mirren is a horrible actress, Pierce seems like he has dementia or is acting like he doesn't know where he is, and Tom Hardy has morphed into Stephen Graham. Plus they end every sentence with "ya?" (Upward inflection) because that's how everyone talks in the UK apparently.

by Anonymousreply 8April 30, 2025 12:45 AM

I think it doesn't help to recommend your favorite titles to another person without knowing what kind of entertainment they enjoy.

OP, you didn't say what you have enjoyed in the past. Maybe that could give us a clue of what your tastes are and we could do a better job of helping you.

Yoiks. Not a good rec for the upcoming movie "The Thursday Murder Club", in which they both star.

by Anonymousreply 10April 30, 2025 12:53 AM

All you need is Pluto TV. It's free. It's AMAZING! There is always something to watch.

by Anonymousreply 11April 30, 2025 12:54 AM

It's called the paradox of choice. The more options one has, the greater is the anxiety to make a decision which is followed by a greater chance of regret and/or dissatisfaction.

by Anonymousreply 12April 30, 2025 12:56 AM

The free streaming services have some great stuff but the ads are repellent.

by Anonymousreply 13April 30, 2025 12:58 AM

And now Prime is loading just about every movie with ads. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 14April 30, 2025 1:55 AM

I enjoy watching episodes of First Dates UK- usually on YouTube but today on Tubi.

by Anonymousreply 15April 30, 2025 1:57 AM

OP, it's because no one under 50 has a creative bone in their body.

The only new shows I've enjoyed have been Severance and Paradise.

by Anonymousreply 16April 30, 2025 2:18 AM

Whenever I watch Paramount I feel like they think I’m a straight white MAGA male.

by Anonymousreply 17April 30, 2025 2:21 AM

Dig deeper, OP.

by Anonymousreply 18April 30, 2025 2:25 AM

I live on PBS passport.

by Anonymousreply 19April 30, 2025 2:27 AM

The old stuff I run the whole film in my head in a nano second and so never click. The new stuff in the first 15 min I've figured out the charcters and plot line.. Click off. Been there seen that.

by Anonymousreply 20April 30, 2025 2:32 AM

Have you watched the Pitt? It's pretty good if you like medical dramas.

by Anonymousreply 21April 30, 2025 2:34 AM

Oh yeah, I forgot -- I watched The Pitt too. But it was only OK.

by Anonymousreply 22April 30, 2025 2:35 AM

OP what do you like to watch? What type of characters do you gravitate to?

by Anonymousreply 23April 30, 2025 2:51 AM

OP, I enjoy intelligent thrillers but can't find enough of them.

by Anonymousreply 24April 30, 2025 3:02 AM

I recently binged the last season of YOU.

Glad the saga finally came to an end. It was becoming more & more ridiculous as it dragged on, season after season.

I rewatched SATC last month. I still love that show, & the younger gals I work with are now watching it for the first time. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to live in NYC as a teen & young adult. That stated, life in NYC is the same as life in any other place: you’ve gotta work to make a living, & the rent /mortgage ALWAYS take precedence over Manolo Blahniks, and Mr. Big.

I’m also the only gal in the office who has a real life Chris Noth story, but I keep that to myself, because my time with “Mr. Big” is none of their fucking business. 😂

by Anonymousreply 25April 30, 2025 3:08 AM

I spend too much as well but we watch something almost every night from after dinner until I either go read or go to bed. It's a big big of our entertainment - we enjoy the time together.

by Anonymousreply 26April 30, 2025 3:19 AM

The Criterion Channel has a huge collection of films from all over the world, OP. It's well worth the subscription fee.

by Anonymousreply 27April 30, 2025 3:24 AM

Try The Diplomat on Netflix. But start with Season One.

by Anonymousreply 28April 30, 2025 3:53 AM

Do I spot a frau parody post...?

by Anonymousreply 29April 30, 2025 3:55 AM

I could barely get through Season 1 of the Diplomat; I haven't been able to get myself to watch Season 2.

And I actually like Keri Russell!

by Anonymousreply 30April 30, 2025 10:31 AM

^frau

by Anonymousreply 31April 30, 2025 10:35 AM

I loved the Pitt. No melodramatic music just dialogue and action. I thought it was great.

I recommend Slow Horses on Apple TV and an old series The Good Wife. Christine Baranski is sublime.

by Anonymousreply 32May 1, 2025 10:28 PM

Have you watched My Brilliant Friend on Max?

Four seasons and totally absorbing. (You’ll need closed captions.)

by Anonymousreply 33May 1, 2025 10:31 PM

It's not them, OP, it's you.

by Anonymousreply 34May 1, 2025 11:07 PM
It's about London mobs dealing with lose cannons in their midst.

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 35May 2, 2025 12:28 AM

On one of these TV threads somebody recommended a new and slightly strange spy series, and it was on Tubi or Pluto. Can anyone tell me what it is?

by Anonymousreply 36May 24, 2025 12:44 AM

Mobland is not good. I'm sitting through it as my partner watches it. It's a lot of hammy acting and unnecessary bad accents (Pierce Bronsan).

by Anonymousreply 37May 24, 2025 12:49 AM

I loved The Pitt so much I re-watched it. I finally caught up on Hacks. I stopped watching The Last of Us when Pedro was killed off but I started watching again and it’s surprisingly good.

by Anonymousreply 38May 24, 2025 12:57 AM

Probably makes no sense but one thing good about watching broadcast TV in the old days was that even if you were watching it alone, you knew a lot of other people were watching the same thing at the same time, and that somehow made it more of a communal experience. You also knew your friends or other people you knew were watching it--sometimes you'd cqall each other and tell the other person to put some show on because it was amazing or funny.

by Anonymousreply 39May 24, 2025 1:01 AM
Have you watched My Brilliant Friend on Max?

An amazing show.

by Anonymousreply 40May 24, 2025 1:18 AM

I also tried watching Mobland and was shocked by Helen Mirren's shitty Irish accent. You'd think an actor of her caliber would be able to do that accent.

by Anonymousreply 41May 24, 2025 1:39 AM

R24, these are all TV series. The only one which is current is Slow Horses. The others are varying degrees of Older, so your algorithm is unlikely to throw them up. If you haven't already seen them, they all qualify as intelligent thrillers.

Chernobyl; True Detective (but only Season 1); The Flight Attendant for its deliberate Hitchcock overtones; Vigil; Traces; Slow Horses (spy thriller); Spooks (likewise); The Killing and The Bridge (both in the original Scandi versions, with subtitles).
