R1 he was barely on the original show. He was a main cast member on season 1 (he’s a part of the opening titles) and then reduced to recurring in season 2 for a few episodes before his character being fully gone.

According to wikipedia, ABC executives wanted the original to be called "Wisteria Lane" or "The Secret Lives of Housewives", both of which are better than "Desperate Housewives" imo.
