This Gen Z comment: "THE MEDIA. which includes SOCIAL MEDIA" explains so much
Media to me is corporate media, newspapers, tv stations, institutions, degrees, job applications, verified sources, professional etiquette. (Although all that is slipping)
Social media is people making screenshots, sharing tiktok videos, the most upvoted articles getting the most exposure.
I am old enough to know the difference, but if Gen Z and Y really can not differenciate between the two, no wonder we are where we are.

Do you have a context for your comments, OP? For that matter, do you have a point?

I understand what you are saying, OP. It is pretty frightening.

Gen Z and younger seem to honestly believe social media equals media. They don't even see the problem with that. That is a media literacy failure we all pay for. I didn't understand this until now, but they are not just lazy, they haven't been taught otherwise.

I am old enough to subscribe to the Times and the Journal and smart enough to recognize that there are other sources of news that, yes, can come through social media.
The world changed.

R4 Of course, not doubting that. But which social media channel do you consider an equally verified source that adheres to the same journalistic standards as the Times? (Guardian/Atlantic whatever you fancy)
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 29, 2025 8:49 PM

Of course there are youtube channels full of professionals in their field. But this is not what this person meant. They were saying Tiktok, Reddit, Insta is media, period.

R5, no social channel is inherently reliable. But some people on those channels are reliable. That’s who I look for.

The Guardian is fucking shit. I loved it back in 2004 when I moved to the UK and now I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole. It’s as skewed and pandering and blinkered as most any other source of mainstream media - the entire landscape has changed.

Why is OP resisting posting the full context of the quote?
Also, OP thinking journalistic integrity and professionalism still matters to the media is laughable. As is thinking social media is still organic, rather than controlled by the algorithms.
Seems like a lazy attempt to whine about young people. Post a link to where this statement was made.
[quote]but if Gen Z and Y really can not differenciate between the two
I bet they could differentiate though.

TikTok is media. Period.
It is not establishment media. It is not reliable, verifiable, or professional. It is not the New York Times or The Atlantic or the BBC.
But you're using media as a measure of quality when it is only a definition of form.

How the fuck are degrees and job applications part of the media? And which institutions exactly? Dear god OP is an idiot

R10 I didn't say social media is organic. I also didn't say journalistic values are not eroding, but there are at the very least safeguards in place to make posting absolute bullshit impossible. They are also liable and can get sanctioned. When have you ever seen Facebook take responsibility for spreading false information.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 29, 2025 9:12 PM

r13 You said the most upvoted articles getting the most exposure. That's organic, and doesn't happen in the majority of social media. And when has Fox ever taken responsibility for spreading false information? What are Murdoch's safeguards?
And we're still waiting for the context. Or did you just make it up?

R12 Everybody that works at the NYT or a tv station has at least a degree, and went through job interviews, and is vetted and trained. Meanwhile on Reddit there are low-effort posts that get 10k upvotes and are seen by as many as 378k people. And they are factually false.

R14 There is no "we", get off your high horse. Who the fuck do you think you are?

As so-called digital natives, shouldn't they be a little more discerning?

r15 Actually there is a "we", r1 also asked for the context. So at least two different people.
Again, why are you not providing one?

I agree with you guys that the established media is in downfall. But if you use social media you should at least vet your sources and that is not happening, at all.

OP - what is the FUCKING SOURCE of your "Gen Z comment."
Why should we listen to a lecture from you about media literacy when yours is in the toilet?

R22 Nope, like him very much. Just wanted to know whether he is homophobic, and his fandom is very weird. But I wouldn't expect you to understand what someone is saying even with more CONTEXT.

By the way. I am a college teacher. So I only see a college cohort of Gen Z. Most certainly know the difference between TikTok and The New York Times and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The difference doesn't mean the same to them as it does to me.

An analogy that someone shared with me a while back - it’s kind of silly, but there’s a lot of truth to it - is that consuming legacy media is like having sex with a woman and consuming social media is like having sex with a tranny. It started out as a freaky novelty but after a while it became normalized and people forgot that chicks aren’t supposed to have dicks. Similarly, people forgot that social media isn’t supposed to be a valid news source.

Social media is a valid news source, sometimes.
Legacy media is a valid news source, sometimes (see, e.g., Judith Miller of the Times)

r28 So you think people have to be nice to you and beg for a source for your claim? Is that something you learned from your corporate media?
