White House: Amazon is Hostile and Political
WASHINGTON, April 29 (Reuters) - White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday that Amazon's announcement that it will include the price of tariffs on the pricetag for products is a hostile act.
Leavitt said she had just spoken to President Donald Trump about the Amazon announcement and that his message about it was: "This is a hostile and political act by Amazon."

Why is it hostile, KKKaroline?

You have to love Republicans. They chastise anyone and everyone for wanting to interfere with private enterprises.
But, when they run things, they have no problem dictating to private enterprises how they should be run.

This is great. There is NOTHING the White House can do except have these tantrums, if companies such as Amazon want to add a "Tariff cost" line to their pricing. I can't fault them for wanting to let customers know it's not the company's fault that the desired $40 item is now $60 because of the Trump Tariffs.
The GOP House and Senate seems to be afraid of Trump personally, but these big-company CEOs and senior execs are not.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 29, 2025 2:35 PM

Is Amazon talking about listing the actual tariff paid per unit on finished products imported directly from other countries or about calculating the contributory cost of tariffs on various components? And would the latter be a straightforward calculation?
It would be nice to know the answer to these questions. I think it would undermine Leavitt’s assertion that disclosing the impact of inflation during Biden’s term is analogous.

From what I’m reading, this is an unfounded rumor based on some spitballing at an Amazon meeting. But KKKaroline took the bait, and now Bezos can see just that the million bucks he donated to Trump’s inauguration couldn’t even buy him a phone call for verification.

Seems like the acquiescence is complete. Bezos is going to regret his caving. People will stop buying mountains of shit until this is fixed, post Trump. People love and need cheap products but they won't have the cash to pay double the price.

Of course Amazon backed down. I knew it sounded to good to be true. Most people, though, don't need to see the tariff cost listed to know they're paying almost double what they used to on similar items. Amazon will suffer for sure.

Well, shit. At least Amazon got part of what they wanted: customers to be aware and to understand. Now it's headline news and will be commonly understood that when their prices surge, they wanted to put a line item about the Trump Tariffs but TRUMP GOT MAD and so they didn't, that's why customers will just see the price increase. But everybody will know and understand the reason.

First, the rumor started because Shein and Temu were putting the "import fees" on their line-item pricing. Apparently the idiots who run Amazon Haul thought about it for a second and decided against (don't want to piss off the orange tyrant), but it leaked and some rando-new-to-the-WH press pool ran with it. (Side note: sure is good that responsible journalists at the AP have been blocked from the WH press room!)
Nevertheless, consumers are about to feel the pain. And what they think is going to be short term pain that will result in long term gain is anything but short term — prices are quick to escalate but slower than cold molasses to decline — and there will be no long term gain [italic]except for the Chinese.[/italic] They are poised to gain market share, specifically on Amazon but elsewhere as well, as the tariffs devastate America's small businesses. Scholarly research bears this out:
Chinese sellers have structural advantages that tariffs cannot address. Many are either manufacturers themselves or have a closer proximity to manufacturing than American businesses. They benefit from Chinese government support through export subsidies and tax rebates. And they’ve become increasingly sophisticated in marketplace operations through years of platform experience... While tariff advocates cite short-term pain for long-term gain, diverting even a small percentage of Chinese manufacturing back to the U.S. would take years. However, the impact on American e-commerce businesses is both immediate and potentially devastating.
Unprecedented tariff rates are forcing domestic e-commerce businesses into impossible choices: scrambling for emergency capital at predatory interest rates, abandoning shipments they can’t afford to clear, or attempting to raise prices in an already price-sensitive market. Without imminent policy changes, many face the threat of bankruptcy. Ironically, these are the very businesses these tariffs were ostensibly designed to protect.
The data points to a familiar outcome: higher prices for American consumers, complex supply chain disruptions, bankruptcies among domestic sellers, and minimal impact on the marketplace dynamics that have led to Chinese seller dominance. Tariffs won’t save the American share of e-commerce and may well accelerate its decline.
And so, once again, the Trump administration's policies hurt Americans and boost foreigners. Brilliant! That's how you make America great again... right? Right?!?!

R44 No "everybody" will not know that. People are stupid and uninformed and live in echo chambers. Do you think Fox News is going to explain this 25 times a day? It will not. Price hikes will be blamed on anyone but Trump.

Even the biggest MAGas know the tariffs will lead to higher prices, They’ll just believe the bs that jobs will come back to the US and make it worth it. In a way, it’s better for Amazon to cave. Now Trump can’t go crazy blaming fake news but everyone will still know the truth.

Also, Bezos doesn't want the world to know that he and Amazon will make more money when prices go up. Of every dollar you spend, Amazon gets 15 cents off the top (with the exception of a few categories like expensive watches). So when a seller's costs go up by $1.70, he has to raise his price by $2 to break even.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 30, 2025 2:50 AM
|
Not sure about that. If the price alone goes up, Bezos makes more money. If the price stays the same but here is a 100% tarif, Bezos/Amazon will not get 15% of the tariff.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 30, 2025 3:00 AM

Yeah, Amazon only makes more money on products if and when their profit margin increases, either due to reducing cost or taking advantage of consumer demand. This tariff situation is entirely different. Trump is forcing somebody to dig deep and pay, and it won’t be China and it won’t be Amazon.
