As a child did you go to sleep-away camp? Did it have a theme?

When I was eight my parents sent me to slipper-boy camp, for boys who wore slippers, bathrobes and had chains on their glasses at home. It was very pleasant. It was located in an old brick building with mesh on the windows and was surrounded by a high wall. Every morning, noon, and just after dinner they gave us little multi-colored candies to swallow whole. We would sit in a circle and talk about ourselves while Doctor Rottwang took notes. We made crafts and painted watercolors and sometimes graduates students from the university would come play with us. Sometimes if we got too excited they would put us on rides though I don't remember much about. Luckily it was covered by my Dad's health insurance. I was there for 27 months

No. I grew up on a 100 acre farm. I would have loved a summer in the city. LOL

No. But I did have a sleep-over at Coach's cabin up at Big Bear once.

Unfortunately, none of the other guys on the Senior soccer team could make it. He told me that they'd all come down with a bad case of the flu, then praised me for my strong immune system and told me how robust and able-bodied I was, which I believe was the theme.

Yes, one out in the desert, for years. It had a ranch theme. Ranch and religion, boy howdy!

Another horrible camp we tried once was in the mountains. Lots of biting flies, the overnight hike of death, unsure footing and powdering trails maybe 6" wide on the side of mountains. Buck up and do it campers! Other campers were mean and there were no ladders for the top bunks. Those of us who were shorter were supposed to get up there, how?

I was molested at Girl Scout camp.

It's a long story.

I went to Baptist church summer camp for a week each year for several years. I hated all the sports and activities, but I loved seeing the camp counselors (who were 16 or 17 while I was 9 or 10) shower naked.

Old-school sleep-away camp in Maine, 8-weeks every summer. It was pretty amazing, rustic and posh - on a beautiful lake northwest of Augusta. Every recreational activity imaginable, ingrained traditions and comraderie - it was absolutely idyllic.

No I was a really antisocial kid and thankfully my mom understood

The theme was my rich, aging party-girl aunt's big ramshackle house on Long Island sound in Connecticut. Ok it wasn't camp but it felt like it because it was kids world. She was even more latch-key than my parents were.

by Anonymousreply 10April 29, 2025 12:54 AM

Yes, it was called My Nonna's House. The theme was "go outside and play".

Speaking of camps:

[quote] YNOT?

I find that interpretation acceptable. Why not?

Yes: Sibling cloning!

27 months in the booby hatch leaves a scar.

OP have you had to go to “sleep away camp” as an adult? How was the Thorazine?

by Anonymousreply 17April 29, 2025 5:17 AM

I’m r17. Deeply regret that post after reading the whole thread. I’m sorry.

by Anonymousreply 18April 29, 2025 5:20 AM

No. My family has money...

My camp experience. Hmmm. Nothing really awful, just me at 11 trying to be normal at a camp like on TV or in a book I read.

by Anonymousreply 20April 29, 2025 5:58 AM

I was threatened with sleepaway school by my dad.
