The end of de minimis exemptions means the end of affordable goods shipped from China directly to American consumers.
Uh-oh. Temu just doubled prices because of Trump’s tariffs

by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 28, 2025 8:28 PM |
Not temu related but tariff related - I noticed that various items that are big and heavy and (unknown to me at the time) shipping from China were half off at Walmart.
I got a 20 foot by 10 foot by 6 foot chicken coop for under 200 bucks. I couldn't figure out why so many things were basically half off, Chinese sellers are trying to get rid of stuff before May.
My dog will be happy when she can chase balls off leash and swim in a kiddie pool.

Made by a kiddie.
Shame on you.

Amazon has a new Temu-ripoff called Haul. Very limited selection; similar pricing. But at least it's Amazon.

Amazon sells the same things Temu does but just costs more. Same manufactureres.

I dont quite get when and how Temu pays the tariff, as claimed. Because it is direct to consumer. So the us inspects all their sales and says to TEMU - pay the tariff? Traditionally the tariff on a car would be collected at the boarder. TEMU shipped direct to customer.
This doesn't seem to be a complete story.
Now, how it works with TEMU (and other similar sites like Shein, AliExpress):
Normally, small personal shipments under $800 USD are exempt from tariffs under the “de minimis rule.” • That’s why Temu can send you $5 earrings without you paying import taxes — it’s too small to bother taxing.
But if Trump imposes new tariffs specifically targeting de minimis shipments from China, then: • Even small shipments (say $40 of merchandise) could be taxed. • The U.S. would start charging customs duties even on little personal packages.
BUT THAT IS NOT IN PLACE and it would be ADDITIONAL to the price TEMU charged the consumer.
⸻
If Temu now doubles the price in anticipation of tariffs — how does the U.S. government actually collect that money?
Answer: • Unless a law changes de minimis, CBP still won’t collect anything on a $40 order today.
• If a law or executive order forces collection, then Temu (or its shipping partner) would have to declare the value, pay tariffs at customs, and likely build that into your final price.
If Temu just raises prices without tariffs being charged yet:
• Temu keeps the extra money (unless/until a law or new rules force actual customs collection).
• It’s a preemptive markup, not a tax remittance.
In short:
• Today: Temu pockets the markup.
• Future (if tariffs on de minimis kick in): Temu (or its U.S. broker) would have to pay CBP duties when goods arrive, and either already charged you to cover that or eats some margin.
⸻
One last nuance:
Temu might self-collect and pay the duty themselves in a bulk model. • Example: Instead of shipping 100,000 tiny parcels, they might consolidate shipments in containers, pay tariffs on the whole batch, and then reship domestically.
• In that case, they’d bake it into the price without you seeing a “tariff charge” separately.
⸻
Right now, if Temu doubles its prices, they’re just pocketing the extra. The U.S. government doesn’t collect tariffs on small personal imports unless new laws are passed or enforced. If tariffs start applying to small packages, then Temu (or a customs broker) would pay U.S. Customs when the goods enter the country.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 29, 2025 1:08 AM |
R24, you’re mixing up the shipping cost with the tariff costs. Temu’s costs are going up to cover both the shipping and the tariffs
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 29, 2025 1:16 AM |
R24, Trump has imposed huge tariffs on everything coming out of China. Whether Customs inspects the packages or not is besides the point—the tariffs will still be owed
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 29, 2025 1:18 AM |
No im not confusing shipping and tariff. I am questioning how TEMU gets off doubling the price "in anticipation of tariffs" when there is no logistics in place to a collect point on a 100% tarif on a direct mail to customer purchase of 10 USD for example. It's coming through the mail. The US Postal Service is going to collect the tariff? from Temu? Not a chance in hell. It might collect the tarif from the us customer. But that customer just paid "double* the price directly to TEMU in china.
Nothing is transparent about this colossal rat fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 29, 2025 1:20 AM |
R26 and who is going to collect it, from whom? At what point tin the sale, delivery? The products are shipped DIRECT through mail. This isn't WalMart or Amazon playing middleman.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 29, 2025 1:22 AM |
Let's say I want to buy a 100 dollar item and ship it to Switzerland. The swiss post WILL charge me the Swiss decided import tax. (The US seller or manufacturer never enters the equation. If I buy under 65USD, there is no import tax.) The swiss post will also charge more in fees for the time it takes to apply the tax.
So if Switzerland decides to tarif American products 100%, that means the Swiss Post will collect 100% tax on my purchase. The US seller is STILL NOT INVOLVED.
The us seller cannot charge me 200 and say it will pay the swiss government 100 in tax. Because there is no agency that can track and collect that tax. The only agency in a direct other buyer purchase through the mail, is a post office.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 29, 2025 1:31 AM |
So Walmart and Target and Home Depot can pay the tax and pass the price onto the American consumer. The tarif is collected a port of entry - airport or seaport. The Chinese company is never paying the tax.
But for TEMU - there is no middle agent. SO unless the US Post office is about the step up its game, there can be no tarif collection on a 10 dollar purchase from TEMU. TEMU is a middle man of course, but not one based in USA. The goods are shipped direct from suppliers through the mail. Who is going to inspect TEMU's sales books and make TEMU pay up? I find this highly unlikely.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 29, 2025 1:36 AM |

The tariff is paid by the importer, and in the above scenario, that is YOU, the buyer. The post office (or Fedex, DHL, UPS) will make you pay the tariff before they release the package to you.

I buy American when I can. And go without when I can. I'd rather pay more for quality that lasts. I have had some beautiful English wool sweaters and jackets for 20 years or so. If I got a hole in someone, I would have it mended. Can't say that about some fash fashion crap from Temu.

I would too but, lately, buying American is no guarantee of that.

R34 - says The tariff is paid by the importer, and in the above scenario, that is YOU, the buyer. The post office (or Fedex, DHL, UPS) will make you pay the tariff before they release the package to you.
Yes that is my point. So the USPS is going to have to collect the tariff on your 10 USD purchase from Temu. So TEMU does not "double prices because of Trumps's tariffs" - that would mean Temu charges you 20 instead of 10. And pockets the 10 extra bucks. And then the USPS charges you the 20 tarif, if it's 100% percent tarif. So you pay 40 USD for the formerly 10 dollar item. Nonsense.
Temu's doubling of prices is not explained convincingly that it is because of an "expected" tariff. It's just crap disinformation in another crap post on the Internet.

There goes his buddies' tax cuts, he was going to use the tariffs for. Derrr tee derrr. Did he really think ships would still come in with a 145% tariff. Here’s the scary part. Being he’s not a felon, China's president has been visiting the other countries scooping them up as trading partners, and they are leaving us in the dust. You guys have no idea the sht storm coming. ^^ Background on R49, Amazon doesn't want to be blamed for their price hikes due to the Trump tariffs. So they announced they're going to start putting a "Tariff" line in their pricing, to let consumers know why the price has surged.
And the White House is FREAKING OUT about this. For good reason; more companies will probably start doing the same. And the White House can't do much about it. If a company wants to add a "Tariff line" or a "Trump Sucks Cost Adjustment" or a "wunga wunga fee" or anything they want to their pricing, that's entirely their prerogative. Free market, right MAGA?

Unless you’re prepared to pay for high-end luxury goods, everything, especially clothing, is shit quality now. From shit fabrics and trimmings, to shit construction. I watched a documentary on the rise of the disposable clothing industry, and it’s tracking along with consumer demand. Corporations like Zara and H&M and SHEIN can get knockoffs of designer runway looks on shelves in days. And that comes at a cost to quality. How many people have closets full of crappy clothes now that they barely wear compared with even 20 years ago. It’s led to mountains on garments in landfills.

Mountains of clothes are sent to Africa. There are several documentary videos about it. It is mostly bad news, with some minor benefits. The worst is that it's an ecological catastrophe created in the geographic area that is not mainly responsible for the overproduction of clothes.

I haven’t ordered from Temu but I regularly peruse the Dollar Store (well it’s $1.25 now). Last week I got a great utility knife, the hardware store next door sells them for $3.
