Shedeur Sanders REBUKED by NFL in draft!

He was talked about as being the first pick. He had a whole draft suite set up to announce his coronation in the first round.

Then he slid to the 5th round and was picked 144th.

By Cleveland.

And he is a starter before year two is over is my guess. It is after all the Browns.

by Anonymousreply 8April 28, 2025 6:45 PM

As one of the analysts in the article suggests, this was a bigger rebuke of his dad. I'd say "How awkward for Deion" but he probably lacks the self-awareness to accept his role in this.

by Anonymousreply 9April 28, 2025 6:46 PM

Op has gone over the head of 99.5% of the DL.

As noted above—it was the baggage from his father that held him back. A good bet, at a reduced price, made by Cleveland.

Jeff Ulbrich's son Jax Ulbrich is at the center of one of the biggest controversies of the 2025 NFL draft.

Jax, the son of the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator and his wife Cristina Ulbrich, admitted in an Instagram post on April 27 that he was responsible for prank-calling Shedeur Sanders during the 2025 NFL draft.

On the second day of the draft, before Sanders was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the 144th overall pick, the athlete, who is Deion Sanders' son, received a call from someone impersonating New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis.

"We're going to take you with our next pick, man, but you're going to have to wait a little bit longer, man. Sorry about that,” the caller says in the since-viral video. Sanders appeared confused and replied, "What does that mean?"

Two days later, the Atlanta Falcons issued a statement explaining that Jax had come across Sanders' draft contact information on an open iPad while visiting his parents' home and wrote the former Colorado Buffaloes football player's phone number down to later conduct a prank call.

On April 27, Jax released a statement on Instagram in which he admitted to — and apologized for — prank-calling Sanders during the 2025 NFL draft and making a "tremendous mistake."

"Shedeur, what I did was completely inexcusable, embarrassing, and shameful," Jax wrote. “I’m so sorry I took away from your moment, it was selfish and childish. I could never imagine getting ready to celebrate one of the greatest moments of your life and I made a terrible mistake and messed with that moment."

He went on to thank Sanders for accepting his call earlier in the day. "I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me,” he concluded the post.

According to ESPN, the NFL is looking into the situation and investigating how his number was leaked. Meanwhile, per the Falcons' statement, Jeff was “unaware of the data exposure or any facets of the prank and was made unaware of the above only after the fact.”

Meanwhile, during a press call with reporters after being drafted by the Browns on April 26, Sanders said that he was unbothered by the prank, per ESPN.

"I think, of course, it is childish," he said. "Of course, I feel like it was a childish act, but everybody does childish things here and there."

[quote] Shedeur Sanders reportedly ‘rubbed teams the wrong way’, clashed in meeting with New York Giants

Shedeur Sanders went into the 2025 NFL Draft with everyone expecting him to be a first-round pick, including some who thought the New York Giants would trade up late in Round 1 to get him. However, a private meeting with the Giants reportedly captured a disastrous pre-draft process.

NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay of The Ringer shared on The McShay Show that Sanders allegedly had a bad meeting with New York. He was allegedly unprepared for an install with Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll and when he was called on it, he got into it with Daboll.

“Shedeur didn’t have a great interview with Brian Daboll in a private visit. An install package came in. Preparation wasn’t there for it. Got called out on it. Didn’t like that. Brian didn’t appreciate him not liking it.”

During the quarterback’s slide during the 2025 NFL Draft, reports emerged about team executives finding him arrogant and even dismissive of criticism. Because he didn’t participate in the NFL Scouting Combine, private interviews were critical to show teams that he could be a mature leader of an NFL franchise.

Instead, as Yahoo Sports senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson shared on Sunday’s Inside Coverage podcast, Sanders “rubbed teams the wrong way” and left an unfavorable impression on several executives and coaches.

by Anonymousreply 21April 29, 2025 12:01 AM

While he waited in vain for someone -ANYONE to pick him, Sanders had a press room set up. I haven't seen photos but apparently he laid out all his bling on the table, I think because he thought it'd make a great photo for the cover of Sports Illustrated.

by Anonymousreply 22April 29, 2025 12:14 AM

How many head coaches want to take him on, knowing they are going to have to take calls from Dieon all the time either asking why Jr isn’t getting playing time, or notes on how they called the plays incorrectly if they did.

I’m sure Jr. is over the moon about soon moving to glamorous CLEVELAND!

by Anonymousreply 25April 29, 2025 12:44 AM

Ahead of the draft, the candidates get an install package of plays to learn. During the interview with the Giants it became apparent that Sanders didn’t bother looking at it. To the Giants that said he wouldn’t fit preferring to go with what his father taught him rather than working with the coaching staff.

[quote] Sanders ‘disrespected’ the NFL draft process

[quote] Boomer Esiason: "Multiple owners told their teams to take Shedeur Sanders off the board"

Now that the dust is settling on the stunning Shedeur Sanders draft-weekend rollercoaster, more specific details are emerging about the attitude more than a few teams had about him.

Via Jaclyn Hendricks of the New York Post, former NFL quarterback and long-time NFL analyst Boomer Esiason addressed the issue during his morning show on WFAN.

“When you listen to this kid talk, right prior or at the Combine, about how if you want a new culture in your locker room, I’m the guy to do that, I can turn it around, he’s very high on himself, and I think he’s very off-putting to many, many coaches and general managers in the league,” Esiason said.

“I’m telling you right now, and I know this after talking to three different personnel people in the NFL this weekend, they didn’t even have him on their board. They took him off, and they took him off because the owner said, ‘Take him off, I don’t want that guy. I don’t want this . . . entitled person on our team,’ and I don’t blame them.”

Here, Esiason was specific. Multiple owners didn't want Sanders on the board.

Of course, it's impossible to prove that it's accurate, unless and until multiple owners will come out and say, on the record, that they didn't want Sanders. But something caused him to free fall to a spot that lands well below his objective talent.

The core problem seems to be that Shedeur didn't take the pre-draft process seriously. His dad, Deion, may have done the same thing, as evidenced by his refusal to take the Giants' lengthy test. He told them he won’t be on the board when they draft — and he was right.

But Deion's talent was objectively off the charts. Shedeur didn't have that same level of skill. For those who aren't no-brainer, top-of-the-class prospects, failing to play the pre-draft game can have consequences. For Shedeur, it did.

[QUOTE]I read yesterday that his dad is the only coach he’s ever had. That fact alone makes this Deion’s fault, to a large degree.

This, and his mother's OTT hyperbole, are the last thing any professional coaching staff would want to deal with. It would be a distraction to team morale.

Well done NFL scouts and coaches.

by Anonymousreply 57April 29, 2025 6:51 AM

R36 Trump & Shedeur have much in common: both had rich dads that kept them from being drafted

by Anonymousreply 58April 29, 2025 7:19 AM

The problem is not that dad would be calling the head coach to complain it’s that the owner would be calling Deion and asking for advice on players and coaches..

Deion throws his hat in for an nfl job and owners will be interested.

Don’t feel bad for his kid , who while in college full time , was making more money than most that posts on DL currently make. He is set for life.

by Anonymousreply 59April 29, 2025 10:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 61April 29, 2025 11:11 AM

Trump loves Shedeur's "phenomenal genes." Because it's never about ability and application of learned skills. Just biology and entitlement.

And all the NFL owners are "stupid" for not picking him in the first round.

by Anonymousreply 62April 29, 2025 11:18 AM

Sanders was selected by owner Jimmy Haslam who once again interfered with his GM and coaches, who did not want anything to do with Sanders. This is the same genius Haslam who made the GMs draft Johnny Manziel and trade for Deshaun Watson.

by Anonymousreply 63April 29, 2025 11:30 AM

Shedeur is a Gen Z'er, and his parents are helicopter parents.

This is a display of what happens all the time with this generation and their parents - this is just a more public example of it.

by Anonymousreply 64April 29, 2025 11:34 AM

R64 so if all parents were helicopter parents like Deion their kid would also grow to be an all American and fabulously rich? I doubt that. A college scholarship and maybe a nil but I doubt fabulously rich for most like the sanders kid.

But if so then maybe if only more parents of us on the DL had realized that paying more attention to their child , the children would not have so many , I am a failure in life with no retirement threads, later in life on the DL?

by Anonymousreply 65April 29, 2025 11:45 AM

r65, here's an article about parents like Shedeur's. They go on spring break with their kids: "“I want to be here as a parent knowing that my child is going to be drinking,” said Alisa Seyburn, of Commerce Township, Mich., who joined her youngest on the trip along with her husband, two older sons and one of their girlfriends. “I want to share the experience with my son. I can go to an adults-only resort any time. He’s the reason we came.”"

What Shedeur's parents are doing is probably no different than what parents in this article would do. Of course, other parents would take different approaches. But those are much less interesting approaches that don't grab our attention.

[quote][R64] so if all parents were helicopter parents like Deion their kid would also grow to be an all American and fabulously rich?

Anyone who regularly deals with helicopter parents (particularly educators) knows what R64's talking about. The delusion that their children are more exceptional than everyone else infects the whole family; their constant meddling prevents their progeny from building maturity, independence and (usually) resiliency. That's how you end up with New York Times headlines like "Shedeur Sanders, Deion taught a hard lesson in humility in QB’s NFL Draft slide."

by Anonymousreply 71April 29, 2025 1:59 PM

R67 - and that really is the core of it. So many parents propping up their kids and making them self-confident - which is great. BUT, they don't teach humility - AND they don't allow them to learn and do things on their own so they aren't as capable of dealing with any events that happen without parental intervention.

Look at Will & Jada's kids - their egos are out of control and despite all the hype, they haven't really done jack shit with their lives.

Nobody wants to take lip from a 22 year old who hasn't really done anything before or on their own. Leadership from a 22 year old? C'mon - he probably doesn't pay his own bills or even knows how to do laundry.

But will Deion learn? Oh HELL no - it's all a conspiracy against him and his kid.

by Anonymousreply 72April 29, 2025 2:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 77April 29, 2025 3:10 PM

R77 - but he didn't do his homework at all because he thought it was beneath him / or he didn't have to because he thought he was too good for it.

Yeah - who wants THAT on their team - and his dad causing issues too?

It's disrespectful at the minimum and a major red flag to any organization that wants to have cohesion among the players.

by Anonymousreply 78April 29, 2025 3:22 PM

Was it because he is black?

by Anonymousreply 79April 29, 2025 3:45 PM

It's not possible that he didn't know how to execute the attack plan...that's what he did in high school right? plus with his dad as his coach, surely he must be know a lot...

well this is a lesson for him to learn

by Anonymousreply 80April 29, 2025 3:48 PM

R80 - he won't learn the lesson - it takes years of taking someone down a peg to reverse this type of ego. And it certainly won't happen with Deion around - who is clearly pissed off and will make it out as some sort of conspiracy.

No - they will go the other way. We will see how it plays out - but this kid already had endorsement deals with major brands in college.

I hope he doesn't let his father ruin his career and his ability to get along with other teammates.

I feel like Deion think this is his 'second act' - Deion was HUGE in the 90s - being a professional player in both NFL and MLB - and going to Super Bowl and World Series. It's an amazing feat.

But it's been quiet for him the last 15 years - we may think that would be to rearing his children. You KNOW he missed being in the spotlight - who wouldn't?

Deion needs to keep coaching and let his boy fly.

by Anonymousreply 91April 29, 2025 7:57 PM

IMO, Shadeur went into these interviews thinking it was just a formality so he didn't prepare.

Bronny James is a similar cautionary tale. The Lakers drafted him and he wasn't as good as they thought he would be. He played a couple of games with Dad and was then demoted to the G League, or some such thing.

R92 No one thought Bronny was going to help the lakers now or maybe at anytime in the future. Picking him had little to do with him. Just as any other team beating the Lakers and drafting him first would have had nothing to do with the kid and all to do with dad.

And there is no shame in the G League. Many future nba stars re cutting their teeth thee,

[quote]The show, let me tell you, has nothing to do with reality. I know Pilar for years now and I am very sad that she's using people like you to get some fame, which is all that she ever wanted and Deion knows it. I feel bad for him because he thought he was getting a good wife for his kids and all he got is a gold digger. Has Pilar ever even shown her real face to anyone?

[quote]Pilar comes from Elmira, New York and she had very hard working parents. She tried college for a while but she went to Miami to visit her sister Kandie and her brother Scottie and she met her FIRST catch... Johnny Mitchell from the New York Jets. He met her in a club and, like the movie Pretty Woman, bought her clothes, a car and a RING. SHE WAS ENGAGED ONE MONTH LATER!!! She was only about 20 years old and against her family's advise she moved to New York City with him hoping he would marry her. At this point she had quit college, of course, which was Syracuse University and her father and mother had fought very hard for her to be able to attend for the past 2 years. Keep in mind that her sister and brother, Kandie and Scottie had to start working at an early age and they could never attend a 4-year university. So it was a very big deal. But when things didn't work out with Johnny Mitchell about 4 months later, she didn't go back to college, she went back to Miami. Then she tried to be a model but it didn't work at all so she just left with a friend to Chicago. There she did some print work and tried hard to hang out with Chicago Bulls players. After some months she left with someone else to Los Angeles. She again struggled with modeling, got into music videos... AND SHE MET HER SECOND CATCH, who you wonder? Wesly Snipes

[quote]He's a much older guy and wiser so she did not get an engagement out him. But he did buy her a new car. About 1 year later she met Deion, her third catch, and this one fell all the way! She got him through the God talk and religion because he was going through a lot at the time with his divorce. He really wanted a mother for his kids. What's funny, if you have watched Beyond the Glory in 1999, in that show, Deion explains how she is an angel sent from heaven!! She really is a good actress, you should hear her. Now the story is that she always wanted fame for herself and attention and Deion does not like that. So she is playing the very hard working mother who is smarter than him and struggles a lot taking care of the the mansion, the money.... and he does not let her have a career. Well she says she is a former actress/model so she wants to get that back. Of course, now she is Pilar Sanders, not Pilar Biggers. So if he would help her she could be like Tyra Banks or one of those successful ones!! That's how smart she is. Yes, she is smart because through this show she may very well get enough sympathy since she married a very very bad man, Deion, who according to her, is not a good husband because she cannot be equal partner with his wealth and success.

[quote]So that's reality. A lot better than the show, don't you think?

R91 - but it's not the same - he was a college football player with no experience or proof he could perform on a NFL league.

And if you think scripts are just handed to A-list actors, you are sorely mistaken. ALL of them have to fight to get the roles they want - all of them.

It is extremely rare to just be handed a great script and the juicy role based on your status as a star. Meryl probably has her pick.

Nobody wants a 22 year old with an attitude and sense of entitlement - with a Dad who is 10x worse.

by Anonymousreply 97April 29, 2025 8:27 PM

That's some good dirt, R94!

[quote]R97 If you think scripts are just handed to A-list actors, you are sorely mistaken. ALL of them have to fight to get the roles they want - all of them.

It’s even harder for actresses because there’s fewer roles.

Famously, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS was first offered to Michelle Pfeiffer, who had just worked with its director on MARRIED TO THE MOB. She eventually said the material was too scary for her (though one insider shared that what Pfeiffer was really scared of was that the small scale production wouldn’t be able to pay her usual salary.)

During those negotiations Jodie Foster had flown herself to New York and requested a meeting with Jonathan Deme, saying she wanted to be his second choice if Pfeiffer didn’t work out. She’d spent a long time with the novel and the script and impressed him with her response.

Most actors we finally see in a project were not the first choice for the role. A few huge stars (like Julia Roberts or Tom Hanks, or Jane Fonda back in the day) are offered everything. But then everyone else is in a big, squirming pile.

Trump given credit for the Sanders selection

[quote]Following the first round, the president wrote on Truth Social that Sanders should be "'picked' IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN." While some have linked Trump's comment to the Browns' decision to draft Sanders, others have argued that the president's post may have delayed Sanders' selection.

[quote]During Monday's White House press briefing, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked Leavitt about Trump's post and whether the president believed he "deserves credit" for Sanders ultimately being selected. "All I will say is, the president put out a statement, and a few rounds later he was drafted," Leavitt said. "So I think the facts speak for themselves on that one, Peter."

R97 it’s not a sense of entitlement if in fact you are one of the 2 or 3 greatest athletes in US history as dad is. . And the only thing the brows will care about now is if the kid can help them win. Win maybe not but a good chance to be their starting qb this year.

Kind of shocking though that you might think any NFL player would seem like they were entitled. Or ego driven.

So, the son is so performative (carrying cash in a Louis Vuitton suitcase, etc.) because he grew up on a reality show.

That tracks.

Plus his mama is apparently a longtime gold digger fame whore, so that mindset must have rubbed off - -

R99 - not necessarily true. There are only so many roles, so in order to keep actors happy and look like they're working for them, they will forward scripts for them to review - knowing full well they are not right for the part or would not accept it. It's a game. And they work with the directors and financers of the production, because it helps to get the name out and attract an actor they may want.

That's when you see those articles about actors who were considered for a lead role in a famous film but turned it down - most of the time (but not all) they weren't actually offered the role or were seriously considered.

My friend was an agent at CAA in the 90s and 2000s. I doubt things have changed since.

Anyway - the point is - even great actors and established people play by the rules and work the system. They don't get to skip things like what Shedeur had the temerity to do. They know there are millions on the line and a lot of people's income and careers at stake.

Deion Sanders while a great player is hardly in the top 3 of all-time greatest US athletes, R101. I wouldn’t rank him in the top 10.

by Anonymousreply 104April 29, 2025 10:07 PM

R104, you forgot to sign your name in your post, Ms. Jenner.

NFL.com has him ranked as #5 player of all time. That's just football. He was also pro-baseball player too - and good at it, not like Michael Jordan. And he played MLB for 9 years - not the 1 or 2 years the few other players who have done 2 sports have.

He's definitely up there and had 2 long careers and was a stand-out. He may not make your list, but he has some very impressive stats and nobody has done 2 pro sports simultaneously like that as well as he has.

by Anonymousreply 105April 29, 2025 10:21 PM

R105 hun, I’ve forgotten more about sports than you’ll never know.

Nice try though.

R106 is the 1976 gold medal winner in the Decathalon.

If you can’t admit that your sports knowledge is limited to what you find on Google, there’s no need to prove that you don’t know your ass from your elbow.

R108 - jeesh Caitlin, I know you're having trouble with the meme coin lawsuit, but sit down and cross your legs and be a lady!

by Anonymousreply 109April 29, 2025 10:39 PM

R109, find a new shtick. You’re neither funny nor insightful.

by Anonymousreply 110April 29, 2025 10:43 PM

There are so many factors that go into casting actors in roles. It’s interesting to me that even while they’re progressing with an ideal choice, they have to be feeling out other performers… because what if Choice #1 gets pregnant? Or hit by a taxi? Or what if the start date of the project changes? And producers have always played actors off each other as a bargaining tool. (“Well listen, Patty Arquette’s willing to do it for FREE! Tell your greedy ass client THAT!”)

Some (reportedly) failed Clarices:

Ellen Barkin

Kim Basinger Was considered for the role of Clarice Starling, but Basinger proved too expensive after the success of "Batman".

Geena Davis

Andie MacDowell

Michelle Pfeiffer

Meg Ryan

Brooke Smith According to an EW.com article, Brooke Smith auditioned for the role of Clarice Starling. When she heard that Michelle Pfeiffer (a close friend) was also up for the role, "My first response was, 'Oh great, I'll have to play the fat girl in the hole.' And Michelle said, 'You'll be great at that!' I said, 'Thanks a lot!'"

Madeleine Stowe

Emma Thompson

There's no way the kid didn't know what was expected of him at these meetings...his dad must have told him or he must have friends in NFL

by Anonymousreply 113April 30, 2025 2:16 AM

R111 and guess what Pfieffer has openly admitted for decades she made a mistake but graciously admitted the role belonged to Foster and it landed where it needed to land. No one in the world could see it different now. Clarice looking like Pfieffer is a different character even though the book is kinda going for a Hitchcock blonde. Foster in the part gave an authenticity a beautiful blonde would have changed.

Yes present parents can prop children to success but not for this generation. In my ancient time parents sided with teachers and coaches to help shape their kids. Now they are offended if you don't treat them like they are the greatest child ever conceived and that has emotionally retarded the current generations.
