How goes the vote in Nunavut?

by Anonymousreply 1April 28, 2025 5:03 PM

R1, Nunavut is currently held by the NDP, but the Liberals are running a new star candidate that they hope will allow them to take the seat.

It could be close.

by Anonymousreply 2April 28, 2025 5:05 PM

Thank you, R2.

Yay! Go, Nunavutians!

by Anonymousreply 3April 28, 2025 5:07 PM

Trump does Carney another solid, this time on election day:

[quote]Latest polls show the Liberals ahead of the Conservatives, when only a few months ago the Conservatives held a 25-point lead.

The power of the orange turd.

by Anonymousreply 5April 28, 2025 5:32 PM

I am thankful that turd has been so aggressively awful in his 2nd term. It made a lot of people who were considering voting conservative give their heads a shake

by Anonymousreply 6April 28, 2025 6:28 PM

R4 - I think Dump was kind of signalling too that people should vote Pierre, because he’d bend over for him. Or at least I hope Canadians also read it that way and run to Carney instead.

by Anonymousreply 7April 28, 2025 10:41 PM

N.L. polls are about to close

by Anonymousreply 8April 28, 2025 10:54 PM

R4, Trump is such an ass. Hasn't anyone shown him the polling numbers in Canada show the majority of Canadians hate him and would vote for the Democrats?

by Anonymousreply 9April 28, 2025 11:05 PM

R9 - Canada wouldn’t be a 51st state. It’d be a territory like Puerto Rico. Explain that to Maple MAGA though.

by Anonymousreply 10April 28, 2025 11:07 PM

Conservative closet case Jason Kenney is on the CBC Election panel tonight.

by Anonymousreply 11April 28, 2025 11:08 PM

I bet we’d be treated just as well as Puerto Rico too

by Anonymousreply 12April 28, 2025 11:13 PM

Martime polls now closed

by Anonymousreply 13April 28, 2025 11:30 PM

New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island & Nova Scotia polls now closed.

by Anonymousreply 14April 28, 2025 11:30 PM

[quote] New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island & Nova Scotia polls now closed.

It’s Martime there!

by Anonymousreply 15April 28, 2025 11:33 PM

A there any exit polls?

by Anonymousreply 16April 28, 2025 11:36 PM

We won't see much movement for almost another two hours.

by Anonymousreply 17April 28, 2025 11:39 PM

So far liberals have 6 ridings cons have 3

by Anonymousreply 18April 28, 2025 11:41 PM

Conservatives appear to be doing a little better than expected in Newfoundland, but mainly in the rural areas.

by Anonymousreply 19April 28, 2025 11:42 PM

Those are just leads so far though

by Anonymousreply 20April 28, 2025 11:42 PM

Why does Trump say Canada is to be one state when it’s 10 provinces and 3 territories? Probably doesn’t even know they exist? Or he pronounces it like ā€œprovidenceā€ and just thinks they’re cities. He really is that dumb.

by Anonymousreply 21April 28, 2025 11:43 PM

I'm flicking between CBC & CTV.

by Anonymousreply 22April 28, 2025 11:43 PM

Because he probably sees it as one territory , R21.

by Anonymousreply 23April 28, 2025 11:44 PM

Which coverage do you think is better, R22?

by Anonymousreply 24April 28, 2025 11:45 PM

I can’t take the stress of seeing results come in across Canada. It’s too close for comfort for my liking. I’m taking something to knock me out and I’ll face the news when I wake up tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 25April 28, 2025 11:46 PM

No opinion yet r24. I just switched to TVA for a bit.

by Anonymousreply 26April 28, 2025 11:47 PM

R23 He’s so fucking stupid.

by Anonymousreply 27April 28, 2025 11:48 PM

Why not stay here with us for a while, R25? 😊

by Anonymousreply 28April 28, 2025 11:48 PM

R26, any hot French Canadian guys hosting on TVA tonight?

by Anonymousreply 29April 28, 2025 11:50 PM

Lots of grey hair r29. Mario Dumont is looking grandfatherly

by Anonymousreply 30April 28, 2025 11:52 PM

Eeeeeeeeeeee!

by Anonymousreply 31April 28, 2025 11:54 PM

[quote]Why does Trump say Canada is to be one state when it’s 10 provinces and 3 territories? Probably doesn’t even know they exist? Or he pronounces it like ā€œprovidenceā€ and just thinks they’re cities. He really is that dumb

Stupidity. But it's also a system he likes. Just like California gets only two senators.

by Anonymousreply 32April 28, 2025 11:55 PM

Atlantic Canada - granted early going - seem to be following the polling. My call going in is a small Liberal majority. ~175 SEATS.

by Anonymousreply 33April 28, 2025 11:57 PM

Current Seat Results (Leading & Elected)

LIBERAL - 16

CONSERVATIVE - 5

by Anonymousreply 34April 29, 2025 12:01 AM

Yikes

13 to 13

by Anonymousreply 35April 29, 2025 12:13 AM

now 25 L - 13. Up and down in the early going. But eeeeeeeee!

by Anonymousreply 36April 29, 2025 12:15 AM

sorry! 15 - 13! Typo

by Anonymousreply 37April 29, 2025 12:16 AM

now 17 L - 11...

by Anonymousreply 38April 29, 2025 12:16 AM

Yeah we'll drive ourselves crazy watching the numbers change. I need a drink.

by Anonymousreply 39April 29, 2025 12:17 AM

Canadians have been so impressive in rebuking the US. I fully trust they will reject the Trump-bootlicking conservatives

by Anonymousreply 40April 29, 2025 12:17 AM

Is poutine a big thing while watching the results? Or fondue?

by Anonymousreply 41April 29, 2025 12:18 AM

It looks like the Conservatives are performing a little better than expected in Atlantic Canada tonight. But it is also confusing which vote is in the Early vote vs. Election Day vote.

by Anonymousreply 42April 29, 2025 12:21 AM

Eeeeeeeeeeeeh!

by Anonymousreply 43April 29, 2025 12:21 AM

It's gonna be a Con minority. I'm telling you, the polls are wrong.

by Anonymousreply 44April 29, 2025 12:21 AM

R42, maaaaybe.

The early voting might skew Liberal. The smaller rural polls report more quickly. But yes, it looks a bit better than expected.

by Anonymousreply 45April 29, 2025 12:23 AM

R38 hooray!

by Anonymousreply 46April 29, 2025 12:25 AM

Sean Fraser is gonna lose his seat.

by Anonymousreply 47April 29, 2025 12:25 AM

R47, Too Early to say. I hope 6'5 hottie Sean Fraser prevails.

by Anonymousreply 48April 29, 2025 12:29 AM

I'd like to see Sean Fraser's seat.

by Anonymousreply 49April 29, 2025 12:30 AM

Beer r41.

At Issue panel!

by Anonymousreply 50April 29, 2025 12:37 AM

Liberals 7% ahead of Cons in popular vote so far. Bigger than the average spread in the polls.

by Anonymousreply 51April 29, 2025 12:43 AM

Holy shit, Libs not doing as well as expected in Atlantic Canada.

by Anonymousreply 52April 29, 2025 12:45 AM

This is worrisome. I think conservatives are gonna win. The polls were way off in atlantic Canada. If they are this much off in the rest of the country.... yikes. Not looking good for Mark Carney.

by Anonymousreply 53April 29, 2025 12:46 AM

R44 I think so too.

by Anonymousreply 54April 29, 2025 12:47 AM

R51, is that the national popular vote figure or the Atlantic Canada figure?

by Anonymousreply 55April 29, 2025 12:49 AM

How are the NDP doing?

Do the Bloc still want un QuƩbec libre?

by Anonymousreply 56April 29, 2025 12:49 AM

R55, I think just the vote counted so far, so Atlantic Canada. West of it is still voting.

by Anonymousreply 57April 29, 2025 12:51 AM

R56, NDP vote down across the board.

Bloc leading in 1 Liberal riding so far.

by Anonymousreply 58April 29, 2025 12:51 AM

Liberals leading or elected 22, Cons 10. I don't see a slide significant enough to give the Cons a minority. But the Liberals might get one now.

by Anonymousreply 59April 29, 2025 12:53 AM

I've been saying that the polls were wrong for awhile, (mentioned this in the Mark Carney PM thread). I know people who are NOT conservatives.at all, but wanted a change. The LPC has had 10 years. I hate PP and voted for the Liberal candidate, but yeah, the Libs have had their chance.

by Anonymousreply 60April 29, 2025 12:54 AM

About another 35 minutes until the Quebec & Ontario returns start coming.

by Anonymousreply 61April 29, 2025 12:54 AM

[quote] Do the Bloc still want un QuƩbec libre?

Mais oui, but not as vocally given Trump's presence.

by Anonymousreply 62April 29, 2025 12:57 AM

Hung parliament maybe??

by Anonymousreply 63April 29, 2025 12:59 AM

[quote] Hung parliament maybe??

Is Trudeau still on the ballot?

by Anonymousreply 64April 29, 2025 1:00 AM

No r64. Mark Carney replaced him.

by Anonymousreply 65April 29, 2025 1:01 AM

R64, Trudeau is well hung according to a DLer who saw him naked a couple of decades ago.

by Anonymousreply 66April 29, 2025 1:01 AM

The risk is if the Liberals get the plurality they have no natural ally to work with... The NDP seem shut out.

by Anonymousreply 67April 29, 2025 1:03 AM

Liberals move ahead of the Bloc in the one Quebec riding reporting so far.

by Anonymousreply 68April 29, 2025 1:05 AM

If you look at 338, the results are tracking right against Fournier's call... except for two in Nfld.

by Anonymousreply 69April 29, 2025 1:05 AM

R65 is tone deaf. :)

by Anonymousreply 70April 29, 2025 1:06 AM

Liberals elected: 20

Cons: 6

Quebec and Ontario just got ten times as important.

by Anonymousreply 71April 29, 2025 1:12 AM

The Liberals need to be pretty far ahead in Ontario and Quebec because Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC will be a big Con wall.

by Anonymousreply 72April 29, 2025 1:23 AM

R72, yes, although Libs have some potential in British Columbia.

by Anonymousreply 73April 29, 2025 1:25 AM

3 minutes

by Anonymousreply 74April 29, 2025 1:27 AM

[quote] Before never like thriving is bottom ass scrawny a being career this however over be may career movie it!

by Anonymousreply 75April 29, 2025 1:27 AM

R74, it's getting to be a nerve-wracking time! 😲

by Anonymousreply 76April 29, 2025 1:28 AM

Bear in mind it's all hand count. And people still in line get to vote. So we're looking at a lag.

by Anonymousreply 77April 29, 2025 1:28 AM

Wait, wait -- I thought Mark Carney already was the new Prime MInister? I love him!

by Anonymousreply 78April 29, 2025 1:31 AM

266 seats coming with the 930 close.

by Anonymousreply 79April 29, 2025 1:31 AM

OMG!!

by Anonymousreply 80April 29, 2025 1:33 AM

What is it, R80?

by Anonymousreply 81April 29, 2025 1:34 AM

If the NDP vote collapse in the Maritimes carries through to the rest of the country then the Liberals will get a majority.

by Anonymousreply 82April 29, 2025 1:35 AM

I'm sick to my stomach.

by Anonymousreply 83April 29, 2025 1:36 AM

OMG!!!!

by Anonymousreply 84April 29, 2025 1:37 AM

WHAT R84????

by Anonymousreply 85April 29, 2025 1:37 AM

ERMAGERD!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 86April 29, 2025 1:41 AM

It's gonna be a nail biter, R85!! There's no way the cpc should be doing so well this early.

by Anonymousreply 87April 29, 2025 1:43 AM

Andrew Coyne just said that the Liberals have done WORSE in Atlantic Canada than they did under any of their minorities. Yikes.

by Anonymousreply 88April 29, 2025 1:45 AM

Liberals up 12 seats over the Bloc.

by Anonymousreply 89April 29, 2025 1:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 93April 29, 2025 1:52 AM

Canucks, what is a ā€œRidingā€?

by Anonymousreply 94April 29, 2025 1:52 AM

No, R91.

It's not good.

My prediction is coming true. There's no way now the Liberals will win a majority.

by Anonymousreply 95April 29, 2025 1:53 AM

R94, a district.

by Anonymousreply 96April 29, 2025 1:54 AM

Jason Kenny is delusional if he thinks prior NDP voters in Ontario are going to now vote Conservative.

by Anonymousreply 97April 29, 2025 1:54 AM

A constituency, R94.

by Anonymousreply 98April 29, 2025 1:54 AM

That’s a very good sign.

by Anonymousreply 100April 29, 2025 1:55 AM

No, R97, he's not. The Conservatives have been gaining with blue collar unionized workers for years now.

by Anonymousreply 101April 29, 2025 1:55 AM

I think it's a small majority for the Liberals.

by Anonymousreply 102April 29, 2025 1:55 AM

Something about Edmonton-Southeast. I can’t quite put my finger on it…

by Anonymousreply 103April 29, 2025 1:56 AM

Poor Jagmeet!!

by Anonymousreply 104April 29, 2025 1:56 AM

[quote] I think it's a small majority for the Liberals.

I think the difference between a small majority and a comfortable majority is going to come down to how badly the NDP vote on Vancouver Island collapses, and how much of it goes to the Liberals.

by Anonymousreply 105April 29, 2025 1:57 AM

I voted liberal but even a con minority will leave us much better off than the us

by Anonymousreply 106April 29, 2025 1:58 AM

I think CBC said to get to a majority the Liberals needed 18 seats and are leading or elected in 15.

by Anonymousreply 107April 29, 2025 1:59 AM

Libs leading in the bellweather riding of Peterborough so far.

by Anonymousreply 108April 29, 2025 1:59 AM

The people I know on Vancouver island voted green because it was between green and conservative in their riding.

by Anonymousreply 109April 29, 2025 1:59 AM

Oh no.

by Anonymousreply 110April 29, 2025 1:59 AM

Hah! That batshit crazy cunt Michelle Ferreri is losing her seat in Peterborough!

Americans: imagine if Marjory Taylor-Green impregnated Lauren Boebert and produced a horrifically retarded offspring.

by Anonymousreply 111April 29, 2025 2:01 AM

LIBS now approaching 100 seats in the Leading/Elected.

by Anonymousreply 112April 29, 2025 2:02 AM

leading and elected:

Liberals up 17 (need to win 18 to get to majority.)

Conservatives down 5

Bloc down 11

I am breathing a little easier. Just a little.

by Anonymousreply 113April 29, 2025 2:03 AM

Chantal HƩbert said the Liberals are getting the best results she has seen in QuƩbec since Pierre Trudeau.

by Anonymousreply 114April 29, 2025 2:04 AM

CTV is saying, based on results so far, Liberals will a minimum of 146 seats while the Cons can take a MAXIMUM of 146 seats.

by Anonymousreply 115April 29, 2025 2:05 AM

Chantal is a national treasure.

by Anonymousreply 116April 29, 2025 2:05 AM

Surely Chantal could use just even a drop of conditioner in her hair regimen.

by Anonymousreply 117April 29, 2025 2:05 AM

FranƧois-Philippe Champagne, Liberal minister from QuƩbec (and rumoured to be gay) has been re-elected.

by Anonymousreply 118April 29, 2025 2:06 AM

CTV calls it for Carney

by Anonymousreply 119April 29, 2025 2:07 AM

That's what I love about her, R117.

I ham zorry, I just god owd dof bed.

by Anonymousreply 120April 29, 2025 2:07 AM

R119, Minority or Majority?

by Anonymousreply 121April 29, 2025 2:08 AM

Liberals win!!

by Anonymousreply 122April 29, 2025 2:08 AM

r121, that remains to be seen

by Anonymousreply 123April 29, 2025 2:08 AM

[quote]The people I know on Vancouver island voted green because it was between green and conservative in their riding.

That’s what I just did, R109; our riding has always been quite polarised. On Vancouver Island, though, so many other ridings are projected to go Liberal rather than the usual NDP, which is crazy! I think people are really freaked out about Polievre getting into power.

by Anonymousreply 124April 29, 2025 2:08 AM

For the Nunavut Troll: the NDP is leading in the very early vote.

by Anonymousreply 125April 29, 2025 2:08 AM

R121 - he won his seat.

by Anonymousreply 126April 29, 2025 2:08 AM

You’ve got a way with words, R111.

ā€œHorrifically retardedā€ will be my new go-to for describing DLers who constantly bring up Follies on the Theatre threads.

by Anonymousreply 129April 29, 2025 2:10 AM

CBC PROJECTS A LIBERAL GOVERNMENT

Not sure yet whether it is Majority or Minority.

by Anonymousreply 130April 29, 2025 2:11 AM

A friend of mine just tested that for the first time in decades their riding in Ontario has gone liberal

by Anonymousreply 131April 29, 2025 2:11 AM

cbc just called a Liberal government! No call on majority or minority!

by Anonymousreply 132April 29, 2025 2:11 AM

Thank God... I'm honestly kinda crying as I type this.

by Anonymousreply 133April 29, 2025 2:12 AM

Another blow to Trump's fragile ego.

by Anonymousreply 134April 29, 2025 2:16 AM

As an American dem it's a little funny feeling relieved seeing so much red on a map.

by Anonymousreply 135April 29, 2025 2:16 AM

Did Carney and Poisonous Pierre win their respective ridings?

by Anonymousreply 136April 29, 2025 2:16 AM

Sad that the NDP vote is collapsing but grateful that a right-wing party is being defeated.

by Anonymousreply 137April 29, 2025 2:17 AM

No results from Ottawa yet r136

by Anonymousreply 138April 29, 2025 2:17 AM

What a relief. Looking forward to being smug tomorrow to all of the racist hicks who wanted Milhouse to be our next PM.

by Anonymousreply 139April 29, 2025 2:18 AM

R136... not enough votes counted to say but based on what little there, Carney has 76% of the votes cast.

Nothing from Paurevoir's riding. That's the one where the election protestors staged the 90 candidate ballot. It's going to be a cunt to count.

by Anonymousreply 140April 29, 2025 2:19 AM

[quote] Did Carney and Poisonous Pierre win their respective ridings?

I’m assuming yes since the news coverage hasn’t mentioned them at all.

by Anonymousreply 141April 29, 2025 2:19 AM

R136, I thought a poster upthread had mentioned Carney retaining his seat but I might have misunderstood.

by Anonymousreply 142April 29, 2025 2:19 AM

I hope PPs career is over after this

by Anonymousreply 143April 29, 2025 2:20 AM

So did the NDP do so badly because their voters tactically went for Carney or are there other reasons they are losing support?

by Anonymousreply 144April 29, 2025 2:22 AM

R136, Carney doesn't have a seat. Yet.

by Anonymousreply 145April 29, 2025 2:23 AM

I wonder if the Cons will realize they need to purge the Manning reformers from the party.

by Anonymousreply 146April 29, 2025 2:25 AM

I would say that they went for Carney, r144 . They moved to the centre because they don't trust Poliver to deal with Trump.

by Anonymousreply 147April 29, 2025 2:25 AM

I think I have a little crush on Rosemary Barton. I like her vibe.

by Anonymousreply 148April 29, 2025 2:25 AM

I'll sleep ok tonight

by Anonymousreply 149April 29, 2025 2:25 AM

R144 I think they parked their votes with the Liberals.

by Anonymousreply 150April 29, 2025 2:25 AM

I think PP is done. It will take him a while to swallow his outsized sense of entitlement and finally listen to the calls of his party, but I think he's toast. He'll go full rogue now, move his family to Calgary, close to Preston, and circle jerk over their annexation fantasies

by Anonymousreply 151April 29, 2025 2:27 AM

May Trump's inane threats so turn every election (including those in the US).

by Anonymousreply 156April 29, 2025 2:32 AM

I'd say tactical r144. I feel bad for Jagmeet. He's a good man.

by Anonymousreply 158April 29, 2025 2:33 AM

by Anonymousreply 159April 29, 2025 2:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 162April 29, 2025 2:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 164April 29, 2025 2:40 AM

Carney comes across as sharp and competent and likeable, with his banking past giving him extra gravitas. He's an impressive politician.

by Anonymousreply 170April 29, 2025 2:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 178April 29, 2025 2:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 179April 29, 2025 2:56 AM

by Anonymousreply 180April 29, 2025 2:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 181April 29, 2025 2:58 AM

[quote]Where's Justin tonight??

by Anonymousreply 182April 29, 2025 2:58 AM

R180, we have a multi-party system so a when the winner receives less than just over 50% it's a minority.

by Anonymousreply 183April 29, 2025 2:59 AM

Green Party Co-Leader Elizabeth May's riding not in yet.

by Anonymousreply 184April 29, 2025 3:02 AM

r180 to govern in Canada, you need to pass key legislation as in half the votes plus one in parliament. If you win the most seats but not half, you need to court the support of some smaller parties. This is good news for the Bloc QuƩbƩcois.

by Anonymousreply 185April 29, 2025 3:02 AM

It's good to see the Cons defeated, but they haven't lost by the margin that we were hoping.

by Anonymousreply 186April 29, 2025 3:04 AM

Mark Carney is winning his seat.

by Anonymousreply 187April 29, 2025 3:04 AM

What about PeePee??

by Anonymousreply 188April 29, 2025 3:08 AM

R180, we don't divide government like you do. We have the Crown, as head of State, separate from the Executive (Prime Minister and Cabinet) which also rests within the Legislative, so a minority government could lose a vote in the house at any time. The Prime Minister and the Cabinet are responsible to, or must answer to, the House of Commons for their actions If it is a kind of legislation considered a confidence matter. Confidence votes are "explicitly worded motions which state that the House has, or has not, confidence in the government; motions declared by the government to be questions of confidence; and implicit motions of confidence (money bills.)

If a government loses a confidence vote the PM is obligated to go to the Governor General, representing the King, and tell her he has lost the confidence of the house. The PM likely asks for an election, which is automatically granted. If you have a majority you can't lose a confidence vote because your party has the most seats.

by Anonymousreply 189April 29, 2025 3:08 AM

Liberals projected to win!!

by Anonymousreply 190April 29, 2025 3:09 AM

Congratulations, Donald! You are now the first president to lose a Canadian election.

by Anonymousreply 191April 29, 2025 3:10 AM

Minority governments aren’t ideal and have traditionally ended up in another election within a coup years or so.

by Anonymousreply 192April 29, 2025 3:11 AM

R183 No! A minority government is where less than a majority of ridings are held by one party, and the leading party then must form a coalition with another party to get a majority of ridings.

It is NOT based on popular vote. In Canada it is quite possible to secure a majority in Parliament (without a coalition) based on a popular vote below 50%.

Gotta wonder what Trump was thinking or not thinking, in posting that. Could he just not resist the opportunity to "flex" and to goad and troll the Canadians on their election day, and he didn't care (or think) that his taunting would only help the Libs?

by Anonymousreply 203April 29, 2025 3:25 AM

Here is my question about polling that I have never had an answer to.

I briefly worked for a polling firm about 20 years ago. In that era of call-display and rudimentary spam filters less than 1% of the people we contacted would answer, and for the phones, if they did, the rarely agreed to participate. When I was growing up, if you were contacted by a polling firm it was serious business. In the 21st century, it's an annoyance.

So the results are only representative of people who agree to participate, and (I would say) they are in no way representative of the population. BUT polls are big business and the media loves them, but are they still relevant.

by Anonymousreply 204April 29, 2025 3:25 AM

You’re the one who worked in polling—-and you ask the DL?!

Doomed, I say.

by Anonymousreply 209April 29, 2025 3:31 AM

This outcome kind of doesn't surprise me. Paurevoir offered Canadians weary of Trudeau a laundry list of treats and promises and some revenge. Carney's campaign went into safe mode to preserve the lead. I think they went too far and that is reflected in the ambiguity we're still facing tonight. But what Carney has done is a miracle.

by Anonymousreply 210April 29, 2025 3:31 AM

R203 - at one point a few weeks ago in a Fox interview with Ingraham, he said that Canadians were the nastiest people to deal with and that he'd prefer to deal with a Liberal government because they were easier to deal with and he would enjoy it more or some such shit. He just kept repeating over and over how nasty Canadians were to deal with.

When the Liberals and Carney are declared winners (fingers crossed) - Trump will probably take credit for it. "Look what I can do with just a few words! I rule the world!"...

by Anonymousreply 211April 29, 2025 3:33 AM

Haha! I love it. Carney is wearing Red and White beaded bracelets on his left wrist.

by Anonymousreply 212April 29, 2025 3:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 213April 29, 2025 3:35 AM

[quote]Gotta wonder what Trump was thinking or not thinking, in posting that.

by Anonymousreply 236April 29, 2025 4:02 AM

So a minority government but that shouldn't be hard for Carney to put together.

"As we’ve been reporting, the CBC and CTV broadcasters are projecting that Carney’s Liberals will win the election.

At present, the CBC is predicting that the Liberals will win 159 seats, while CTV says the figure could go up to 162.

That’s several seats short of the 172 seats that it needs to form a majority government."

by Anonymousreply 246April 29, 2025 5:04 AM

I'm sad Carney didn't get a majority. The polls were way off, unfortunately. But at least PP didn't win!

by Anonymousreply 247April 29, 2025 5:09 AM

CBC still won't call it. I think nobody is sure the status of the advance vote which was widely thought to favour the Liberals. We could wake up to a small majority tomorrow. Long shot but not beyond the pale.

by Anonymousreply 248April 29, 2025 5:13 AM

R247 They weren't way off. The popular vote is roughly what the polls were showing this weekend with the Cons gaining on them. The issue is that the Liberal's typical vote efficiency in Ontario didn't work. There was some riding where the NDP/Lib vote split allowing the CONs to come up the middle, and it does appear that some NDP voters went blue.

That being said if the Libs can pull off 163 seats, they will have the 172 with the NDP and single Green seat to pass legislation.

by Anonymousreply 249April 29, 2025 5:15 AM

205 of 266 polls reporting, Paurevoir still 4% behind the Liberal. ~2500 (?) votes.

by Anonymousreply 250April 29, 2025 5:20 AM

R249 According to CBC Mark Carney had a 70 % chance of winning a majority. I also saw him at 180-190 seats in most polls. So yeah, they were way off.

by Anonymousreply 251April 29, 2025 5:34 AM

Carney giving a great speech - generous, resolute, humble, determined and funny. He'll be a good Prime Minister at a critical time,

by Anonymousreply 252April 29, 2025 5:35 AM

I think the Liberals played the campaign just a little too safe. They were so close to majority. They hid the guy we saw tonight a little too much.

by Anonymousreply 253April 29, 2025 5:47 AM

If the number I just saw is correct, 165 and ndp 7, that means he has a majority with the ndp. That's good!

by Anonymousreply 254April 29, 2025 5:54 AM

CTV is now saying *might* be a majority.

by Anonymousreply 255April 29, 2025 5:56 AM

Bruce Fanjoy is a hero!

by Anonymousreply 257April 29, 2025 5:58 AM

Polls reporting: 235 / 266

Votes: 60,867

LIB. Bruce Fanjoy. 49.6% 30,185

CON Incumbent. Pierre Poilievre. 46.9% 28,54

by Anonymousreply 258April 29, 2025 6:01 AM

No matter the final result - looking increasingly likely the Liberals will be just below or above an absolute majority - this is an amazing comeback for the Liberals. They have effectively doubled their support since the turn of the year.

by Anonymousreply 267April 29, 2025 7:08 AM

R267, what numbers are they basing that analysis on?

by Anonymousreply 268April 29, 2025 7:12 AM

by Anonymousreply 278April 29, 2025 8:00 AM

Yes, R271, but an interesting phenomenon, nonetheless.

by Anonymousreply 279April 29, 2025 8:05 AM

Liberals up to 168 seats now. Still 4 seats short. Sadly I think they'll end just below what they need got a majority. Good thing is they have majority with NDP though.

by Anonymousreply 280April 29, 2025 8:06 AM

Darn those Libs in Canada. They still managed to "steal" the election even with voter IDs being required in Canada.

by Anonymousreply 281April 29, 2025 8:13 AM

Fanjoy extends his lead over Pollievre by another 500 votes! Pretty sure it's over now.,

by Anonymousreply 282April 29, 2025 8:20 AM

The polling was accurate in many respects. The topline numbers show the Liberals & Conservatives each over 40% of the vote, which is not far off where the pollsters said. The Liberal number is bang on at 43.5% -- exactly where the final polls had them. The Conservative vote was bit undercounted, yes.

But the numbers for the NDP & the BQ were bang on also.

And the numbers coming out Carleton over the past few weeks suggesting that Pierre Poilievre could face a tough fight in his own riding turned out to be accurate, too.

by Anonymousreply 283April 29, 2025 8:21 AM

Thanks for that update, R282. I'm glad that the voters in Carleton are rendering their judgement on PP's reckless support of the Trucker Convoy in 2022.

Here's her career bio from Wiki, R286:

[quote] After working in retail and customer service roles, in 2008, at 20 years of age, Poilievre was employed as a parliamentary affairs advisor at the Senate of Canada before taking a job in the House of Commons of Canada. In 2013, she began working for then Leader of the Senate Claude Carignan as a parliamentary affairs advisor. She then worked for Member of Parliament Michael Cooper from 2015 to 2022.

[quote] Poilievre is a co-founder of Pretty and Smart Co online lifestyle magazine. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic she supported restrictions, but later became critical of public health measures in Canada.

[quote] In March 2023, conspiracy theorist Chris Sky falsely claimed on Twitter that Poilievre was CEO of Switch Health, a company that won contracts from the Government of Canada to undertake COVID-19 testing. Sky based his statements on output from ChatGPT artificial intelligence software.

[quote] In 2024, Poilievre launched "Their Stories Matter", a social media initiative to bring awareness to human trafficking. She also launched another initiative, "Lead Her Forward" with Vanessa Mulroney the same year

She really hasn't had much of a career, to be honest.

Looks like her husband is the family's main source of income, along with their two rental properties:

[quote] Poilievre and her husband have two children. The family owns a rental property in Orleans, Ottawa, which she bought in 2012 and took a mortgage on in 2020. Pierre Poilievre defended the investment as ā€œhelping solve the problem by providing affordable rental accommodations to two deserving familiesā€. He also said his wife used the equity in her property to ā€œmaximize the best interests of her financial position.ā€

by Anonymousreply 304April 29, 2025 10:48 AM

We don't call that a coalition r303 in Canada. We've had coalitions before and they usually include a formal agreement on power sharing (a cabinet seat or two for the smaller party).

by Anonymousreply 305April 29, 2025 10:57 AM

So a formal coalition or a piecemeal coalition.

by Anonymousreply 306April 29, 2025 11:12 AM

Not at all a coalition, R306.

by Anonymousreply 307April 29, 2025 11:19 AM

Usually? R305

by Anonymousreply 308April 29, 2025 11:33 AM

It's not difficult. A coalition means the smaller party is part of the government and so would be expected to fall in line under Cabinet collective responsibility and deliver its backbench votes. A confidence agreement allows the smaller party to vote against the government except for confidence votes.

by Anonymousreply 309April 29, 2025 12:50 PM

When it comes to Carney vs Trump I expect a lot more cooperation from the Bloc. Also the Bloc prefers a liberal government to CPC, as they have shown in the recent past. I can't see the Bloc supporting a non-confidence vote.

by Anonymousreply 310April 29, 2025 1:00 PM

A coalition entails a coalition agreement. You negotiate with your coalition partner(s) on every single thing you want to pass over the next term and then sign a coalition agreement/contract. If your coalition partner breaks the agreement by voting against you, the coalition collapses and the election is called.

In a minority government, every single item on the agenda is negotiated as it comes up, and goodies can be extracted by the kingmaker based on various factors in any given moment. These are more unstable, for obvious reasons.

by Anonymousreply 311April 29, 2025 1:04 PM

So far that’s four different descriptions of ā€œcoalition.ā€

by Anonymousreply 312April 29, 2025 1:16 PM

Held my nose and checked out Fox news website, had to see how they are playing this. . Zilch, Nada, Nothing. Lead story is about Amazon , followed by Venezuelan gangs, more 'those pesky Dem' stories. State TV (fox) is doing its appointed mission.

by Anonymousreply 313April 29, 2025 1:40 PM

Fox viewers and MAGA don’t care who’s in power in Canada. They know daddy Dump will take care of whoever it is and out them in their place.

R315 I love that woman!

by Anonymousreply 318April 29, 2025 2:26 PM

I belong to a group that in my redneck hometown and all last night conservative supporters were on there bitching about how they’re going to leave the country or move to Alberta when it separates. One guy went on some alcohol fuelled rant about how he made $100,000 a year but he had no money and it was the liberals and their voters fault somehow

by Anonymousreply 319April 29, 2025 2:29 PM

So what happens with Poilievre now? Will he resign as leader or will someone have to vacate their safe conservative seat for him to run in a by election?

by Anonymousreply 320April 29, 2025 2:33 PM

Imagine how PP is going to go in to full attack mode once the House reconvenes; PP use his childish barbs and name calling endlessly to try to take Carney off his game; Carney has no experience in the House but I expect he will manage well. Doug Ford can't throw his hat in the ring for the federal Con leadership fast enough.

by Anonymousreply 321April 29, 2025 2:35 PM

Someone will vacate their seat, despite party divisions over retaining PP as their leader. PP has been a politician since age 24, I don't really know what else he would do, there's no cushy law firm job in the future for him, he'll fight to stay on as leader

by Anonymousreply 322April 29, 2025 2:38 PM

Even if Pollievre steals a seat and retains the leadership, surely he's a busted flush? He'll always be the leader who managed to piss away a 20 point lead in 4 months. The Liberals just need to make him a Liz Truss type figure of derision.

by Anonymousreply 323April 29, 2025 2:44 PM

I can’t honestly see the party wanting to keep him on as leader.

Sadly the NDP/Lib split the vote in several Ontario ridings that allowed the Con candidate to win. My parents live in London-Fanshawe which has been an NDP seat for 20 years, but it flipped blue because of the NDP/Lib split.

by Anonymousreply 346April 29, 2025 6:27 PM

Libs have just ticked up another 2 seats (flipping one from the BQ), and forecast is now up to 169.

by Anonymousreply 347April 29, 2025 6:53 PM

I actually hope that PP stays leader - he is so tied to Trump he will forever be poison. Doug Ford may want the leadership but he doesn't parlez nous franƧais.

by Anonymousreply 348April 29, 2025 7:03 PM

Just 8 seats to go now - looks like Libs will finish on 169 - with the NDP on 7, they should have a workable majority on most legislation.

by Anonymousreply 349April 29, 2025 7:23 PM

Not a coalition

by Anonymousreply 350April 29, 2025 7:28 PM

Can a Canadian explain how PP could "remain leader" if he lost his seat?

by Anonymousreply 351April 29, 2025 7:57 PM

by Anonymousreply 354April 29, 2025 8:11 PM

r352 Wow. Who would do that? And would PP then be potentially representing an area to which he has no connection?

by Anonymousreply 355April 29, 2025 8:41 PM

R355 er, em…..that’s pretty common in the Westminster system.

by Anonymousreply 356April 29, 2025 8:46 PM

I'll bet Poilievre will be given the boot by the party brass. Everyone must be sick of his yapping as opposition leader and he just proved that he can't successfully pivot from his years of MAGA-adjacent talking point. He has repelled potential voters, rather than attracted them, and losing his own riding is the last nail in his coffin.

by Anonymousreply 357April 29, 2025 8:49 PM

He's in a more vulnerable position now, out of office, than last night, when he proooooobably had a seat. The knives will come out. They always do. He's less safe than he was.

But....

Minority governments have a typical shelf life of 18 - 24 months. The Liberals will be planning around that. The Conservatives have lots of money but to be leaderless with the risk of another election not so far in the future. The NDP have no money, no leader, and it seems unlikely there'll be a stampede of quality contestants for the job. Plus, the NDP lost votes to the Conservatives, which means some of the labour wing aren't swinging progressive when they swing away from the NDP. The NDP may feel some pressure to be seen, from time to time, to hang closer to the centre.

Point is, pragmatism may dictate they stick with Paurevoir and he gives all the rednecks in his caucus, which are many, a hard on. But not the gay kind.

by Anonymousreply 358April 29, 2025 9:42 PM

Isn’t pp Pretty unlikable? I never liked the guy but I used to hear people say positive things about Stephen Harper and I know he fostered kittens. PP seems really vile.

by Anonymousreply 359April 29, 2025 10:53 PM

I would say PP is of the weasel variety, like Vance or DeSatan.

by Anonymousreply 360April 29, 2025 11:49 PM

Stephen Harper is very smart and was hyper-disciplined about running a right of centre party that people who would naturally incline towards the Liberals could accept and even vote for, while still keeping the Conservative’s natural base feeling energized and important. I have never voted for the Conservatives, but I would say that Harper really, really wanted to be Prime Minister, understood what the gig entailed (through the lens of his own politics), and, importantly, had the instincts and the stomach for it. I think he ran his party with an iron fist, but with less personal egoism than Justin Trudeau. In short, he felt like he was ready for prime time.

I would also say that he had the benefit of Canada’s much more regulated financial sector during the recession - thank you, Paul Martin - and having Obama (who Canadians love) as the President he spent most of his time in office dealing with.

The ā€œI’m just a dad who loves kitties and playing the keyboard in my basement jam bandā€ stuff sort of softened his Margaret Thatcher aspect - the steely ambition and lower middle class chip on his shoulder, but he’s still seen as a cold fish even by Anglo-Canadian standards.

by Anonymousreply 361April 29, 2025 11:57 PM

More important- what’s Justin and his ass up to these days?

How does he get the blame for Trump? It's not like he had any control over Trump.

by Anonymousreply 363April 30, 2025 12:09 AM

He had control over how much he cosied up to and aped Trump and the MAGA right

by Anonymousreply 364April 30, 2025 12:27 AM

[quote]How does he get the blame for Trump? It's not like he had any control over Trump.

It wasn't just Trump. He put all his eggs (and initially had great success) in the "Hate Trudeau/Axe the Carbon Tax" basket. As soon as these became non-issues he was fucked.

by Anonymousreply 365April 30, 2025 12:27 AM

I find it really creepy how many Canadian MAGA types are saying whack shit about the the liberals winning. Like how we’ll all be starving and in poverty now. But somehow they’re also socialists? I didn’t like it when the cons won but I knew as an average person my day to day life wouldn’t really change and I was bummed but when on with my life and it was okay

by Anonymousreply 366April 30, 2025 2:32 AM

Thanks r361. Good description.
