How goes the vote in Nunavut?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 28, 2025 5:03 PM

R1, Nunavut is currently held by the NDP, but the Liberals are running a new star candidate that they hope will allow them to take the seat.
It could be close.

R180, we don't divide government like you do. We have the Crown, as head of State, separate from the Executive (Prime Minister and Cabinet) which also rests within the Legislative, so a minority government could lose a vote in the house at any time. The Prime Minister and the Cabinet are responsible to, or must answer to, the House of Commons for their actions If it is a kind of legislation considered a confidence matter. Confidence votes are "explicitly worded motions which state that the House has, or has not, confidence in the government; motions declared by the government to be questions of confidence; and implicit motions of confidence (money bills.)
If a government loses a confidence vote the PM is obligated to go to the Governor General, representing the King, and tell her he has lost the confidence of the house. The PM likely asks for an election, which is automatically granted. If you have a majority you can't lose a confidence vote because your party has the most seats.

R183 No! A minority government is where less than a majority of ridings are held by one party, and the leading party then must form a coalition with another party to get a majority of ridings.
It is NOT based on popular vote. In Canada it is quite possible to secure a majority in Parliament (without a coalition) based on a popular vote below 50%.

Here is my question about polling that I have never had an answer to.
I briefly worked for a polling firm about 20 years ago. In that era of call-display and rudimentary spam filters less than 1% of the people we contacted would answer, and for the phones, if they did, the rarely agreed to participate. When I was growing up, if you were contacted by a polling firm it was serious business. In the 21st century, it's an annoyance.
So the results are only representative of people who agree to participate, and (I would say) they are in no way representative of the population. BUT polls are big business and the media loves them, but are they still relevant.

This outcome kind of doesn't surprise me. Paurevoir offered Canadians weary of Trudeau a laundry list of treats and promises and some revenge. Carney's campaign went into safe mode to preserve the lead. I think they went too far and that is reflected in the ambiguity we're still facing tonight. But what Carney has done is a miracle.

R203 - at one point a few weeks ago in a Fox interview with Ingraham, he said that Canadians were the nastiest people to deal with and that he'd prefer to deal with a Liberal government because they were easier to deal with and he would enjoy it more or some such shit. He just kept repeating over and over how nasty Canadians were to deal with.
When the Liberals and Carney are declared winners (fingers crossed) - Trump will probably take credit for it. "Look what I can do with just a few words! I rule the world!"...

R247 They weren't way off. The popular vote is roughly what the polls were showing this weekend with the Cons gaining on them. The issue is that the Liberal's typical vote efficiency in Ontario didn't work. There was some riding where the NDP/Lib vote split allowing the CONs to come up the middle, and it does appear that some NDP voters went blue.
That being said if the Libs can pull off 163 seats, they will have the 172 with the NDP and single Green seat to pass legislation.

The polling was accurate in many respects. The topline numbers show the Liberals & Conservatives each over 40% of the vote, which is not far off where the pollsters said. The Liberal number is bang on at 43.5% -- exactly where the final polls had them. The Conservative vote was bit undercounted, yes.
But the numbers for the NDP & the BQ were bang on also.
And the numbers coming out Carleton over the past few weeks suggesting that Pierre Poilievre could face a tough fight in his own riding turned out to be accurate, too.

[quote] After working in retail and customer service roles, in 2008, at 20 years of age, Poilievre was employed as a parliamentary affairs advisor at the Senate of Canada before taking a job in the House of Commons of Canada. In 2013, she began working for then Leader of the Senate Claude Carignan as a parliamentary affairs advisor. She then worked for Member of Parliament Michael Cooper from 2015 to 2022.
[quote] Poilievre is a co-founder of Pretty and Smart Co online lifestyle magazine. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic she supported restrictions, but later became critical of public health measures in Canada.
[quote] In March 2023, conspiracy theorist Chris Sky falsely claimed on Twitter that Poilievre was CEO of Switch Health, a company that won contracts from the Government of Canada to undertake COVID-19 testing. Sky based his statements on output from ChatGPT artificial intelligence software.
[quote] In 2024, Poilievre launched "Their Stories Matter", a social media initiative to bring awareness to human trafficking. She also launched another initiative, "Lead Her Forward" with Vanessa Mulroney the same year
She really hasn't had much of a career, to be honest.
Looks like her husband is the family's main source of income, along with their two rental properties:
[quote] Poilievre and her husband have two children. The family owns a rental property in Orleans, Ottawa, which she bought in 2012 and took a mortgage on in 2020. Pierre Poilievre defended the investment as āhelping solve the problem by providing affordable rental accommodations to two deserving familiesā. He also said his wife used the equity in her property to āmaximize the best interests of her financial position.ā

It's not difficult. A coalition means the smaller party is part of the government and so would be expected to fall in line under Cabinet collective responsibility and deliver its backbench votes. A confidence agreement allows the smaller party to vote against the government except for confidence votes.

A coalition entails a coalition agreement. You negotiate with your coalition partner(s) on every single thing you want to pass over the next term and then sign a coalition agreement/contract. If your coalition partner breaks the agreement by voting against you, the coalition collapses and the election is called.
In a minority government, every single item on the agenda is negotiated as it comes up, and goodies can be extracted by the kingmaker based on various factors in any given moment. These are more unstable, for obvious reasons.

I belong to a group that in my redneck hometown and all last night conservative supporters were on there bitching about how theyāre going to leave the country or move to Alberta when it separates. One guy went on some alcohol fuelled rant about how he made $100,000 a year but he had no money and it was the liberals and their voters fault somehow

So what happens with Poilievre now? Will he resign as leader or will someone have to vacate their safe conservative seat for him to run in a by election?

Imagine how PP is going to go in to full attack mode once the House reconvenes; PP use his childish barbs and name calling endlessly to try to take Carney off his game; Carney has no experience in the House but I expect he will manage well. Doug Ford can't throw his hat in the ring for the federal Con leadership fast enough.

Someone will vacate their seat, despite party divisions over retaining PP as their leader. PP has been a politician since age 24, I don't really know what else he would do, there's no cushy law firm job in the future for him, he'll fight to stay on as leader

Even if Pollievre steals a seat and retains the leadership, surely he's a busted flush? He'll always be the leader who managed to piss away a 20 point lead in 4 months. The Liberals just need to make him a Liz Truss type figure of derision.

Sadly the NDP/Lib split the vote in several Ontario ridings that allowed the Con candidate to win. My parents live in London-Fanshawe which has been an NDP seat for 20 years, but it flipped blue because of the NDP/Lib split.

Just 8 seats to go now - looks like Libs will finish on 169 - with the NDP on 7, they should have a workable majority on most legislation.

I'll bet Poilievre will be given the boot by the party brass. Everyone must be sick of his yapping as opposition leader and he just proved that he can't successfully pivot from his years of MAGA-adjacent talking point. He has repelled potential voters, rather than attracted them, and losing his own riding is the last nail in his coffin.

He's in a more vulnerable position now, out of office, than last night, when he proooooobably had a seat. The knives will come out. They always do. He's less safe than he was.
But....
Minority governments have a typical shelf life of 18 - 24 months. The Liberals will be planning around that. The Conservatives have lots of money but to be leaderless with the risk of another election not so far in the future. The NDP have no money, no leader, and it seems unlikely there'll be a stampede of quality contestants for the job. Plus, the NDP lost votes to the Conservatives, which means some of the labour wing aren't swinging progressive when they swing away from the NDP. The NDP may feel some pressure to be seen, from time to time, to hang closer to the centre.
Point is, pragmatism may dictate they stick with Paurevoir and he gives all the rednecks in his caucus, which are many, a hard on. But not the gay kind.

Stephen Harper is very smart and was hyper-disciplined about running a right of centre party that people who would naturally incline towards the Liberals could accept and even vote for, while still keeping the Conservativeās natural base feeling energized and important. I have never voted for the Conservatives, but I would say that Harper really, really wanted to be Prime Minister, understood what the gig entailed (through the lens of his own politics), and, importantly, had the instincts and the stomach for it. I think he ran his party with an iron fist, but with less personal egoism than Justin Trudeau. In short, he felt like he was ready for prime time.
I would also say that he had the benefit of Canadaās much more regulated financial sector during the recession - thank you, Paul Martin - and having Obama (who Canadians love) as the President he spent most of his time in office dealing with.
The āIām just a dad who loves kitties and playing the keyboard in my basement jam bandā stuff sort of softened his Margaret Thatcher aspect - the steely ambition and lower middle class chip on his shoulder, but heās still seen as a cold fish even by Anglo-Canadian standards.

It wasn't just Trump. He put all his eggs (and initially had great success) in the "Hate Trudeau/Axe the Carbon Tax" basket. As soon as these became non-issues he was fucked.
