Gerry Connolly stepping down from Oversight Committee after 4 months due to cancer return

Washington — Democrats elected Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia to serve as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, rejecting a push by some members to tap a younger generation of lawmakers to lead the party on top panels.

Connolly, 74, defeated 35-year-old Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a 131-84 vote to become the ranking member of the powerful committee. Connolly, who came to Congress in 2009, will replace Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, who will serve as the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee when the new Congress convenes on Jan. 3.

"I think my colleagues were measuring their votes by who's got experience, who's seasoned, who can be trusted, who's capable and who's got a record of productivity," Connolly told reporters after the meeting. "And I think that prevailed."

...because sometimes the member has a constituency. (There's a lesson in there.)

I didn't and don't like the way the Dems are handling anything at the moment, but now we've given the old guard their last chance and they've proven completely ineffectual in the face of Trump 2.0. Old school politicking is dead, Nancy. The only thing Dems have done — literally the one legislative accomplishment since Trump's inauguration — was to protect trans athletes. Enough.

IMO, it's time for AOC, Hogg and their young cohorts to tell Dem leadership either step aside and make room for a young generation or they'll form a new party and splinter away what teeny, tiny power the Dems have. And if the old guard refuses, DO IT. It's not like it could be any worse.

Because the neoconservatives who control the party just had a demonstration of what happens when you try to put a woman, especially one with visible melanin, in a position of power in America: everybody loses their shit and runs to beg the nearest Republican white man to save them from the evil cunt witch. THIS IS WHO WE ARE.

AOC doesn't seem to realize that TRANZ are the reason we lost in November..She shouldn't be on ANY committee..She wants boys to compete in girls sports. She learned nothing on Election Day 2024.

Love the Dems who say "gimme this or I won't vote." That's the ticket---to Trump.

I mean I trust the NY Post to report fairly on internal Dem politics.

Please give Gerry Connolly his due. He has been an absolutely kickass Democratic representative. I have several friends and family members in his district who are as liberal and progressive as the could be, and they all love him. His loss will be a big one.
