More Americans are financing groceries with buy now, pay later loans

A growing number of Americans are using buy now, pay later loans to buy groceries, and more people are paying those bills late, according to new Lending Tree data released Friday.

The figures are the latest indicator that some consumers are cracking under the pressure of an uncertain economy and are having trouble affording essentials such as groceries as they contend with persistent inflation, high interest rates and concerns around tariffs.

In a survey conducted April 2-3 of 2,000 U.S. consumers ages 18 to 79, around half reported having used buy now, pay later services. Of those consumers, 25% of respondents said they were using BNPL loans to buy groceries, up from 14% in 2024 and 21% in 2023, the firm said.

Meanwhile, 41% of respondents said they made a late payment on a BNPL loan in the past year, up from 34% in the year prior, the survey found.

Lending Tree’s chief consumer finance analyst, Matt Schulz, said that of those respondents who said they paid a BNPL bill late, most said it was by no more than a week or so.

“A lot of people are struggling and looking for ways to extend their budget,” Schulz said. “Inflation is still a problem. Interest rates are still really high. There’s a lot of uncertainty around tariffs and other economic issues, and it’s all going to add up to a lot of people looking for ways to extend their budget however they can.”

“For an awful lot of people, that’s going to mean leaning on buy now, pay later loans, for better or for worse,” he said.

"Can I get an adjustable rate on the 15-year mortgage on these eggs?"

by Anonymousreply 2April 28, 2025 1:57 PM

Makes sense if you’re desperate— groceries you’ve eaten can’t be repossessed!

by Anonymousreply 3April 28, 2025 2:00 PM

Must be those damn grocers like Kroger and Safeway jacking up the prices again.

Our dear lord and savior Donald J. Trump said grocery prices would go down on day 1 of his reign.

by Anonymousreply 4April 28, 2025 2:34 PM

It’s all them gosh durn DEI hires who are raising prices on real patriots like me!

This is really really sad.

Is this BNPL kind of loan going to turn into this generation's sub-prime mortgage predatory lending epidemic? Because we all know how the latter turned out for the economy.

They’re talking about Klarna and Afterpay? I have seen the options to pay on Walmart/Target/Amazon with them, but I assumed that was for things like clothes and electronics, not groceries.

by Anonymousreply 9April 28, 2025 6:20 PM

"A recent announcement from DoorDash that it would begin accepting BNPL financing from Klarna for food deliveries led to widespread mockery and jokes that Americans were struggling so much that they were now being forced to finance cheeseburgers and burritos."

This is very sad. And the fact that Zoomers and Millennials have the highest percentage of 'late payments' on these BNPL, makes a sad situation even worse.

These people are also doing more chargebacks than ever before on hair color, extensions and expensive salon services- it is a hot button issue in the hair industry for independent operators that have to take the loss.

R16 I haven't heard this at all - this is awful. How do they even get away with this ?

I will share a story of how people get free breakfasts every weekend at IHOP, without using coupons or anything...

About twelve years ago, I worked as a host at a local IHOP when my friend was a manager and she was desperate for an 'adult' to be at the host stand on weekend mornings. The restaurant was located in a low-income neighborhood, and would attract large groups of adults on Saturdays and Sundays, especially Sundays after church services. They would order platters of pancakes, sausage, eggs, french toast, bacon, etc. and coffees. All 4 - 6 adults would 'dive in' and share all the food on the table. The poor servers would roll their eyes walking away from the table, knowing how this was going to end.

Sure enough, the group would eat enough to fill themselves, and leave just enough behind to call the manager (my friend) over, and say 'This didn't taste good. We didn't like it' - to every platter of food on the table. My friend had no choice but to remove all the food items from the bill, and just charge them for their coffees (which were $2 a cup back then and free refills). So a group of 6 adults would have a full breakfast at IHOP every weekend (and yes, they showed up every weekend and pulled the same stunt and nothing could be done about it) and pay $12 each, instead of the $80 - 100 on the original check. And they would tip the poor server with a $1 bill on the table.

A rule at corporate IHOP was: if a customer leaves any amount of food on their plate and complains that they weren't happy with their meal, the meal automatically comes off the bill.

I just came to this article after seeing the one about the club Trump’s kid is opening in DC at a cost to members of half a million dollars.

But we're getting so much more: Illegal rapists are being shipped back home; transvestites are getting out of our girl's showers; and soon we'll have Religious Freedom.

by Anonymousreply 20April 29, 2025 3:13 AM

This does not bode well.

by Anonymousreply 21April 29, 2025 4:04 AM

R18, if that kept happening every weekend over and over at the same IHOP, that is one stupid IHOP. They needed to put a stop to that. It's actually worse than just stealing; it feels so abusive to the staff.

by Anonymousreply 22April 29, 2025 2:17 PM

Ahe jess couldn't vote fer that colored girl. She and Biden wrecked the economy. Mah President Trump will fix it.

by Anonymousreply 23April 29, 2025 2:28 PM

R9, those options can usually be used for anything on the site except gift cards (some fraud concerns with that, I guess). Yes, of course only big necessary emergency purchases should be financed, but these companies know people will use it for anything and everything.

by Anonymousreply 24April 29, 2025 2:39 PM

Paying for groceries on credit? Lawd. We really are about to become a banana republic. I blame white people.

by Anonymousreply 25April 29, 2025 2:48 PM

R22 It was corporate's decision. They didn't want to change the rules for anyone, even those who were pegged as abusers of the system. The franchise owner knew very well the problem we were having, and she reported it to the regional DM (who represented corporate) and they would not allow her to do anything with these customers. That's the policy (and I believe it's still the policy, though my friend now manages one in the 'burbs and this doesn't happen).

by Anonymousreply 26April 29, 2025 8:27 PM

R18 I worked at an Olive Garden for a time next to a low income area and the same demographics pulled that exact same scam daily . Order $200 worth of food, eat 90% of it then bitch and complain till they were comped . AND wanted to go boxes to take the rest home. Never left shit for a tip either . Oh yes, certain groups love that scam . Not a day went by that it wasnt pulled .
