“Sinners” shocker; mere 12% second weekend drop
A 12% second weekend drop for a major wide release (which already overperformed) is exceptionally rare. It is comparable to Titanic (14% drop). The typical wide release drops by over 50% the second weekend. Top Gun Maverick’s 29% drop was seen as miraculous.
“Sinners” may be shaping up to be a landmark horror event, probably one not seen since the original release of “The Exorcist.”
The combination of box office success and universal acclaim could mean the Best Picture, Director and Actor races are already over.

But I was assured by certain DLers – all the usual suspects – last week that it was pure shit and that film critics only posted all those glowing reviews in DEI solidarity because Kamala lost?

R2 please, they're trying to spin this into a hit and it just isn't.
In fact, it's a major flop worldwide.
It had $90 million budget and so far has grossed $93 million total.
That's $78 million stateside and a paltry $15 million internationally.
Thus, it needs to gross double its budget ($90 million + $90 million) in order to recoup/break even and be profitable.
Seeing as its foreign gross is not rising and its domestic gross is going down, I don't see it crossing $180 million.

R3 its second weekend will bring it to $120 million domestically.
Why did you lie?
I am FFing you for lying.

From Wikipedia:
[quote]Some publications claim the film needs to gross $170–185 million to break-even when factoring in its production budget, Coogler's first-dollar gross, premium video-on-demand, and streaming deals with Prime and Netflix.[34][35] Other industry sources place the break-even point at $200–225 million, with Puck going as high as $300 million, because of the film's budget, estimated $50–60 million marketing spend, and the presumption that theaters keep half of ticket sales

The reality
Sinners is performing slightly better than The Sixth Sense (Shicksh Shenshe), which fell 14% its second weekend. Like Sinners, it came out of nowhere, was not expected to do well and achieved its success by reviews and word of mouth.
The Sixth Sense had an 11x multiplier. If Sinners has the same multiplier, it would do over $500 million domestic.
But The Sixth Sense was rated PG-13. Sinners’ R rating will restrict its box office, so a domestic run of $300-$350 million is more likely. The closest parallel would probably be Oppenheimer, which had a similar budget and was also rated R.

To give you an idea of how well it’s doing
Chose a random middle American Cinemark - Dallas - where it is playing in 70mm IMAX.
Every seat for all today’s shows are sold out.
Every seat for all of tomorrow’s shows except the front row is sold out.

R6, not necessarily. There are posters here who insist that every movie released today is a flop, probably because they lost the ability to enjoy anything new and can't comprehend that other people can still do it. Insisting that no movie is ever a success justifies their point of view.
Two years ago we had people insisting that Barbie was a flop. The arguments people made were hilarious. At one point someone basically said "it is a flop because I say it is, and nothing else matters."

You’re hilarious, OP.
Quite a jump going from a box office success in the first few weeks to a mantle full of Oscars when we aren ‘t even out of April yet.
Wishing doesn’t make it so.

Christ, I can't even get through the description of this film on Wikipedia. And I don't like horror movies in the first place.
Pass.

Sinners is innovative and entertaining but it’s no cinematic milestone. The way it’s being hyped it’s as if it’s the best movie in decades. It’s not. But it’s good.
