Gosford Park is a DL favorite. For fun, I thought we could recast the film with ONLY ONE casting change and discuss how it would change the film.
For example, if Judi Dench had been cast as Constance besides Maggie Smith, Constance would have come off as colder and more secure. Although she is ruthless, Smith brings a warmth and insecurity that Dench couldn't bring.

You could recast Ryan Phillippe with any number of young, attractive actors who could do a much better accent. They would all give stronger performances, but the movie would be worse for it.
The character is funnier because he's not convincing. This is one of those rare roles that is improved by the actor's limitations.
