Carol Burnett turns 92 today (and memories from her 56th birthday)
America's favorite funny lady, Carol Burnett, turns 92 today. Since 1989, her birthday has always been tinged with the loss of one of her best friends in Hollywood.
Lucille Ball - died 36 years ago today, on Burnett's 56th Birthday. Shortly after she found out Lucy died that morning, she changed her birthday plans with her three daughters, suggesting a more 'low key' lunch at her home, as she didn't feel like being seen in public celebrating on that emotional day. However, shortly after the change of plans, she received her annual birthday gift from Lucy - a big, beautiful bouquet of spring flowers she sent every year on her birthday (the florist said Lucy called and ordered them from her hospital room two days earlier). Burnett had said when she received the flowers, she realized Lucy was sending her a message - go out and celebrate your birthday ! She took it as a message from her friend saying, 'This day is to celebrate you - you can mourn my passing tomorrow!' So she and her daughter changed plans once again, and headed out to Lunch in a popular LA restaurant, to meet and greet her friends and fans that day. She always called it 'bittersweet'.

My mom pointed out how strange it was at her televised 90th birthday that Carol never smiled once. They’d announce somebody supposedly near and dear and she had a look of., “Ohhh!” But she never smiled.

I sent her a bottle of Jean Nate and a nice blouse.

R3 I don't think she wanted that big ceremony for her birthday. Let's face it - except for Cher (who was sitting next to her throughout the event), all her close Hollywood friends whom she got started with in the 60s were dead. Lucille Ball, Liz Montgomery, Mary Tyler Moore, Joan Rivers, Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Lyle Waggoner - all gone. She outlived them all. Aside from Cher, there's Vicki Lawrence (can't remember if she was there), and Dick Van Dyke (can't recall if he was there) and over the years she had 'a falling out' with each of them. So it makes sense to me for her to look surprised when 'younger talent' like Amy Poehler and Tina Fey came on stage to honor her.
I wonder if she and Barbra Streisand are still friends? Streisand spoke of her fondly in her memoir - remembering the parties she used to go to at Burnett's house in the 60s and 70s. I don't recall Burnett mentioning Streisand at all over the years. (Cher also spoke lovingly of Burnett in her memoir).

R3, Carol can no longer smile since her last plastic surgery.
R6, Carol’s company produced the show, so she must have wanted it. They shopped it to CBS - her old network - and was turned down. NBC picked it up.
Streisand and Carol Burnett are friendly acquaintances, “show biz friends.” Neither are in each other’s inner circle, and at their current ages, it’s doubtful it will change.

Here's Carol and Shirley MacLaine together. Shirley just turned 91 two days ago.

As much as I love Burnett, I've always wondered - who the hell told her she could sing ? She has an awful singing voice.

A few years ago, I recall she won guardianship over her young grandson (who wasn't of age to be on his own) because one of her two surviving daughters (I think the youngest) was a drug addict and living in the streets. It was so heartbreaking to read her court testimony, describing all she tried to do for her daughter at the time, and failed.
Does anyone have any updates on this - is her grandson still under her guardianship ? I never heard anything else about it.

I had the opportunity to meet her when my company published “Carrie and Me”, her memoir about her late daughter Carrie Hamilton. Carol was lovely and gracious, taking time to speak with each and every one of us.

I suspect Vicki Lawrence will fly in on her private plane from Florida to celebrate her birthday with her. Perhaps Vicki will even take her on her private plane to Hawaii Carol's up for it!

R6 that was Julie Andrews sitting next to her on the birthday special.
R12 she got guardianship over her daughter Erin’s son. Her daughter Jody is the executive producer of The Stephanie Miller Show. I believe the grandson actually lives with Jody now.
Not to make this a Trump thread, but Stephanie Miller is a very progressive radio host and comedian in LA. Ironically she’s also the gay daughter of Barry Goldwater’s running mate William Miller.
Jody Hamilton appears on the program and is very vocal about her strong dislike of Trump and all things MAGA. You can find clips on YouTube.
I like to think Carol shares her daughter’s opinions.

I don’t get why her career (kind of) went straight down the shitter after her show ended. I mean, did she ever have a great big hit again?

Joe Hamilton must have been a lush since at least two of his daughters were drug addicts.

R25. Both of Carol's parents were alcoholics. Her two daughters may inherited the traitors from their grandparents.
I've always admired Carol Burnett. I dont she has had an easy life.... raised by a loving grandmother because her parents had drinking problems. Two of her daughters have substance problems, with one dying at a youngish age due to lung cancer while Carol, in her late 80s, feels compelled to become the guardian of her grandson as his mother struggles with addiction. Carol seems to do the best she can with all of it. I've never seen any negative comments from her about her parents or the daughters. Some celebrities would milk the experience for attention;

I remember when CBS asked her to go back to the network and revive the 'Carol Burnett Show'. She did, in the fall of 1991. However, none of the original cast joined her - it was a new supporting cast of people. It didn't catch on (it was horrible) and was canceled after two months.

Back in the day The Carol Burnett Show was such a pleasant escape for a young gay man in high school all alone on a Saturday night-thanks Carol.
