A navy suit is fine, right? It’s just that Trump’s suit is a too bright, especially with his ridiculous hair?
I’m under the impression that men wearing black to a funeral is a more recent thing (as opposed to the second half of the 21st century) and arose as more and more men just didn’t have an appropriate dark suit and as more men had cheap fast fashion-type suits that came in black. Did men own black suits in 1990 if they weren’t undertakers or if they weren’t tuxedos or other evening wear? I
Pre WWII, did men wear black suits in daytime? It’s hard to tell from black and white photos.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 26, 2025 11:53 AM |
A black tie would be the very least or in days when people were too poor to own things like that a black arm band. Trump’s suit should have been dark navy at the very least but if not he could have put on a black or very dark grey tie.

During his first term Donald was always either ditching funerals and memorial services he should have attended or looking very jittery at them. The fact that he's started showing up at them in his second term is either a measure of how desperate he is for attention after four years out of office or that he's far enough into dementia that his death phobia isn't bothering him so much.

r58 It goes back to the Middle Ages for royalty and aristocracy, which the assembled here could count as being. As for the regular folk, they needed to wait for the ready-to-wear clothing of the 19th century to be able to afford special attire just for funerals.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 26, 2025 12:03 PM |
I’m willing to be wrong, but I think there is a generational divide in the opinions on this. I think for Trump’s generation what he is wearing is appropriate except his suit isn’t dark enough. It looks like it’s not even in the navy range. And it seems like he tried to match the suit with a solid tie (appropriate), but since the suit is too light the tie is light and comes off as a little shiny, which is not good.
My father would never have worn a black tie to a funeral, because who owns a black tie? That would have been cos-playing, especially for a a non-family member.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Trump is inappropriately dressed. I just think the issue is the brightness of the suit, not anything else.
R58

[quote] Trump’s suit should have been dark navy at the very least but if not he could have put on a black or very dark grey tie.
Exactly. All dignitaries own a black suit. It’s part of the job. Journalists who travel will often have a dark tie packed in their luggage for propriety; ditto a black top for women. My best friend works for News UK; since the late Queen turned 90 he kept a black suit shoved in the boot of his car. They knew they would be criticised for posting copy in a loud pink shirt so they all knew to be prepared.
For regular folks a sombre dark blue or charcoal suit with a dark or black tie is fine at a formal, religious ceremony. This was a formal, religious ceremony. Trump didn’t wear one because he’s a shit.

I think it's even more cultural than generational. Catholics, but particularly Italians wear black.

Thanatopraxis should be a process funeral homes everywhere she offer, rather than the much more intrusive full embalming process. I'm sure it would be considerably cheaper. Unfortunately a lot of people are under the false belief that embalming will keep their loved one's body looking good for a very long time, and that's just not so. Embalmed bodies rot just like unembalmed bodies, just slower. I once asked an old friend of mine who grew up in a funeral home owning family what an embalmed corpse would look like after 20 years or more and he said "with a few exceptions it would be nothing but skeletal". At times the soil in which a body is buried may be so dry that it may help to mummify a body which may keep it from full deterioration, but not something anyone would want to look at years down the road.
But we all know how funeral homes operate. Anything to beef up the charges.

[quote It's been reported that 250,000 attended, I wonder how they all found lodging.
The canonization of Carlo Acutis was scheduled for April 27th and then cancelled after the Pope's death. The people who had lodging reservations for the canonization probably just decided to keep their reservations and attend the Pope's funeral and other events. But, probably others had trouble finding reservations or lodging.

Kind of sad that he's gone, though I know that's hypocritical of me given that I despise the Catholic Church. He seemed to have more humanity about him than previous popes.

Trump should've worn a black suit, but I think it's funny nobody cares if Zelensky wouldn't put on a suit and tie.

"The choice did not grossly violate the dress code for the event (which reportedly called for a dark suit with a black tie for men). Prince William also appeared to be wearing blue, though a shade closer to navy, and former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. wore a blue tie." (NY Times)

R151 You don't get what? The Pope is considered a global leader. There are more than a billion Catholics in the world. Also Vatican City is an independent state and he's the head of state.

[quote] Trump Refuses to Give Biden Air Force One Ride to Pope’s Funeral
Not even the death of Pope Francis could bring President Donald Trump to make nice and ride with former President Joe Biden.
Sitting President George W. Bush rode with former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton on Air Force One to the funeral Mass of Pope John Paul II’s in 2005. Yet when Trump was told that Biden would also be attending the Saturday ceremony, he didn’t give his political rival much thought.
“Oh he is? I didn’t know,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, The Daily Mail reported. Trump said that a meeting with Biden during the trip to Italy was “not high on my list.”
“It’s really not,” he added.
The MAGA president doubled down on that sentiment during the ceremony as he sat with First Lady Melania Trump and ignored Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden—despite them clearly being within his line of sight, The Daily Mail reported.
Yet even after his sweeping second election win, Trump has kept Biden front and center as a scapegoat. The New York Times reported that Trump mentioned Biden more than 300 times in the first 50 days of his presidency, regularly blaming him for manufactured chaos at the border and attacking him as “the worst president in American history.”
However, Trump did make time to sit down with political frenemy Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reported NYT.

[quote] Vatican Caves and Gives Trump Front-Row Seat for Pope’s Funeral
President Donald Trump, wearing a blue suit in a sea of black, was seated in a prized front-row seat for the funeral of Pope Francis.
The seating location will likely be a source of great satisfaction for the famously thin-skinned president, who mercilessly mocked Joe Biden after he was seated in the 14th row at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022.
Based on precedent, Trump was expected to have been seated in the third row, behind anointed monarchs.
In the end, however, he and Melania were seated in the front row, along with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, whose appearance triggered a spontaneous outburst of applause from the assembled crowds.
Vatican sources told Sky News that Trump met with Zelensky before the ceremony, just hours after the president talked up a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.
The controversy over Trump’s seating would doubtless have prompted a wry reaction from the overtly humble Pope Francis, who dedicated considerable political capital to confronting Trump, denouncing his immigration policy as “un-Christian” and schooling his minion JD Vance on the issue in his final hours.
Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, previously told the Telegraph the ceremony would be a “masterpiece of stage management when you consider those state leaders who have high opinions of their importance.”
“They’ve been doing it since the emperors ruled Rome—they know how to deal with big egos. And I think every leader of a nation that comes here on Saturday will go home reasonably content,” he added.
The concession on Trump’s seating arrangement represents a significant break from the precedent last employed at Pope John Paul II’s 2005 funeral.
On that occasion, Catholic royals took the front row, followed by non-Catholic royals. Non-royal heads of state were then seated behind them in alphabetical order based on the spelling of their countries’ names in French, the official language of Vatican diplomacy.
Trump publicly mocked then-President Joe Biden in 2022 for being placed in the 14th row during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, claiming it was proof that “there’s no respect for the United States anymore.”
He suggested that, were he still president, he would have received a front-row seat.
Biden did attend the pope’s funeral Saturday, he was seated much further back.
