by Anonymousreply 1April 26, 2025 3:10 AM

Oh El!

by Anonymousreply 2April 26, 2025 3:17 AM

Love it. Carefree, upbeat, some actual talent. Take me back!

by Anonymousreply 3April 26, 2025 3:31 AM

You can hear Tootie burping through the whole song.

by Anonymousreply 4April 26, 2025 3:32 AM

“On tour with Janet, with stops in Laughlin, Joliet and Biloxi!”

by Anonymousreply 5April 26, 2025 3:38 AM

Aw, I love this video.

Note, gas was 89¢

by Anonymousreply 6April 26, 2025 4:50 AM

R6, those were the days

by Anonymousreply 7April 26, 2025 5:28 PM

The Jackson family didn't want Janet dating DeBarge because they felt the Debarge family was too trashy for their Janet.

by Anonymousreply 8April 26, 2025 5:47 PM

I always thought they were part Latino somehow - nope. Black mother from Detroit and French-American white father.

by Anonymousreply 9April 26, 2025 5:51 PM

How many music videos did they make?

by Anonymousreply 10April 26, 2025 5:58 PM

I had forgotten about this song. Good one.

by Anonymousreply 11April 26, 2025 6:09 PM

Who is the lead singer in the video?

by Anonymousreply 12April 28, 2025 6:58 PM

I wonder who decided to film a scene in front of Drake's - notorious gay adult bookstore.

by Anonymousreply 13April 28, 2025 7:37 PM

Where any of the members of DeBarge gay?

by Anonymousreply 14April 28, 2025 8:16 PM

One of the last flickers of Motown, before the flame went out entirely in the 1990s.

by Anonymousreply 15April 28, 2025 8:45 PM

I forget how much I enjoy the energy and smooth harmonies in this song. Truly infectious, and the choreography is quite well done. The night time shots really enhance the mood. I certainly hope that the dancers' costumes are in the Smithsonian, every single one.

by Anonymousreply 16April 28, 2025 8:58 PM

Who would win in a knife fight, Debarge or The Jets?

by Anonymousreply 17April 28, 2025 9:03 PM

The Jets have them outnumbered

by Anonymousreply 18April 29, 2025 4:07 AM

R16 those DEI costumes have all been removed.

You can't tell so much from this video and from their look in general, but they were incredibly talented. El Debarge (the singer) was a genius producer, and Bunny (the sister) had a gorgeous voice. When they were opening for Luther Vandross on tour, Luther was getting angry because they were getting a better audience response than he was.

Their father beat them all, and several of them became drug addicts and dealers.

by Anonymousreply 20April 29, 2025 4:48 AM

Loved this one...great finish

from wikipedia.......

In 2010 El, after a six-year sabbatical of releasing solo albums, and following a period of drug addiction and several arrests, released the well-received Grammy-nominated album, Second Chance and went on tour in support of R&B singer Mary J. Blige in 2011, but relapsed and went back to drug rehab to address his continuing issues.

In 2011, James, Randy and Bunny appeared on Dr. Drew's Lifechangers to discuss their troubles with drug addiction, later agreeing to attend a rehabilitation facility. While Randy and James left the facility on a follow-up episode, Bunny still attended and told Dr. Drew of her recovery, even performing a gospel song on the show.

Drug abuse has also brought various tragedies and setbacks over the years: Bobby DeBarge died at a hospice in Grand Rapids after contracting AIDS, following years of heroin addiction; Tommy DeBarge, who also suffered from drug addiction, was on kidney dialysis but sometimes performed with surviving members of Switch and with his family up to his death in 2021 from kidney failure; Randy DeBarge and Mark DeBarge are said to have "incurable diseases", according to their mother. James was sentenced to prison for drug offenses.[9]

by Anonymousreply 22April 29, 2025 5:09 AM

The only good song Diane Warren wrote.

by Anonymousreply 23April 29, 2025 5:27 AM

Why didn't Bobby release more solo albums?

by Anonymousreply 24April 29, 2025 5:34 AM

I remember watching one of those big Motown anniversary shows and they introduced DeBarge as the "next big thing," the inheritors of the Jackson 5 brand and Gordy's new find. Not sure that really took off. Also if you watch the movie Dreamgirls there is a vague reference to this when they have their farewell performance.

by Anonymousreply 25April 29, 2025 5:36 AM

Beautiful voice, here is a more recent effort. I think el de barge is gorgeous

El has at least 14 kids dating back to when he was 14 or 15 years old. Mama DeBarge died not too long ago and was peddling the James and Janet Jackson had a secret child and was claiming a girl who looked nothing like either one of them was their daughter.

James and Randy DeBarge are living together in an RV.

by Anonymousreply 27April 29, 2025 6:38 AM

Is this the only music video they did?

by Anonymousreply 28April 29, 2025 8:05 AM

Jesus Christ.

by Anonymousreply 29April 29, 2025 12:40 PM

OK, I thought all the comments on DL about Janet giving her kid away were a joke. Is James off his rocker or is Janet lying here?

[quote] In 2016, DeBarge claimed on Growing Up Hip-Hop that he and Jackson have a daughter.[3][4] Jackson had previously told Vibe magazine in 2001, "They say the kid's in Europe or that one of my brothers or sisters is raising it .... But no, I've never had a child.

Who was the hottest DeBarge?

by Anonymousreply 35April 29, 2025 4:34 PM

"Love Me In A Special Way"

[quote]The song was written, composed, arranged and produced by lead singer, El DeBarge, who mixed his modal tenor vocals with his high falsetto notes. The song includes a melodica solo by Stevie Wonder, a fellow Motown recording artist.
