Cathy Dennis - Into Skyline

After thrilling us all with her debut album “Move To This” with smash hits like Touch Me All Night Long, Just Another Dream, and Too Many Walls, her follow up album “Into The Skyline” was a commercial dud. The only song on the album that did moderately well on US radio was “Irresistible.”

What went wrong? It had the same Shep Pettibone production that went into Madonna’s Erotica album, and it was well produced.

"You Lied To Me" tried a little too hard to be like "Move To This". Also, she apparently much preferred writing over performing and went on to write a bunch of great pop songs. Plus, back in the early days of "American Idol", that was her voice singing the "oh whoa whoa" hook.

THE Skyline! Into THE Skyline, OP!

I think artists can be too of the moment and image is everything.

You mentioned Madonna who is a good example of this. The original “Lucky Star” album artwork to her debut screamed 80s one hit wonder. She decided to change it to a more punky look which was a smart move.

Cathy looked like a Vogue model making dance music which was so of the times. Technotronic and C+C Factory and Milli Vanilli using models to lip sync.

So I can see why she was overlooked back then. Wouldn’t be surprised if people didn’t even think it was her singing.
