Hee Haw's Lulu Roman IS DEAD TO ME!

From hefty cocaine addict to famed Gospel singer.

Lulu Roman, the brash Hee Haw comedian and gospel singer who delighted fans of the long-running country music variety show while turning her life around in the process, has died. She was 78.

Roman died Wednesday in Bellingham, Washington, her son, Damon Roman, told The Hollywood Reporter. She had moved there to be with him seven months ago. No cause of death has been determined.

Roman appeared on the first episode of CBS’ Hee Haw in June 1969 and on the last one, with the show in syndication, in June 1993. During its impressive run, she reinvented herself as a gospel singer, and she would release more than a dozen albums, perform in concert and record with the likes of Dolly Parton.

by Anonymousreply 1April 24, 2025 9:15 PM

There but for the grace of God go I.

by Anonymousreply 2April 24, 2025 9:19 PM

Oh no, JD Vance's long lost twin is gone!

by Anonymousreply 3April 24, 2025 9:21 PM

Sal…..lute!

by Anonymousreply 4April 24, 2025 9:23 PM

Sad life.

by Anonymousreply 5April 24, 2025 10:21 PM

Lulu would have coke-fueled threesomes with the Hager twins.

Remember how unusually fat she seemed years ago? Now that size woman is run of the mill.

by Anonymousreply 11April 25, 2025 12:26 AM

Caftans to be flown at half staff this evening in her honor.

by Anonymousreply 12April 25, 2025 12:37 AM

Ironically, r10's photo is a more recent one of the Hagar twins.

by Anonymousreply 13April 25, 2025 12:40 AM

r11 Mama Cass was considered monstrously overweight back in her era, her size was quite unusual then. Today, you see women even fatter than she was everywhere you go.

What was in her snack purse?

by Anonymousreply 15April 25, 2025 12:51 AM

"Damon Roman" sounds like a porn star.

I can't believe she a) was only 78 and b) lived that long.

She seemed old in the 70s.

by Anonymousreply 18April 25, 2025 1:57 AM

Miss Lulu is now roamin' in heaven!

by Anonymousreply 19April 25, 2025 2:01 AM

She looks like your average WalMart shopper.

by Anonymousreply 20April 25, 2025 2:18 AM

LOVE WalMart too!

“She be all my sisters and me…!”

Was Misty Rowe reached for comments?

by Anonymousreply 23April 25, 2025 2:41 AM

Hee Haw started in 1969 so 56 years ago so Lulu was only 22!

That's a pretty sad life...never adopted because she was fat. No wonder she had a drug problem.

by Anonymousreply 24April 25, 2025 7:57 AM

The op has given me an excuse to post this shocking hee haw drug song. Hee Haw was a lot more depraved than Woodstock

What was the point of Hee Haw? I was way too young to understand or get its humor. Was it actual southern humor or just using the south as point of view for social commentary?

by Anonymousreply 26April 25, 2025 8:15 AM

R26

It was Laugh In for the country crowd.

by Anonymousreply 27April 25, 2025 8:17 AM

r23, yes.

“We were as different as night & day. Working together since 1972 we were the original Hee Haw Honeys and the original Kornfield Friends. Yet we would often squabble and then makeup by saying "I love you Lu and she would say "I love you too Sugar." Lulu was a gift in my life. She played my mother twice and yet she was just 3 years older than me. We were Gossipy Girls and now Lulu is my angel in heaven. I thank God for her time here on earth and I know we will all see her again in that big Kornfield in the sky someday.

She will sing us home. Lulu, I will always love you.” - Misty Rowe

Lu had a thyroid condition which contributed to her weight and started using to ease the symptoms of the undiagnosed condition.

Once she was diagnosed and treated she slimmed down over the years.

I have one of her country gospel albums from the 70s on which she does a decent cover of the Eagles’ Desperado.

by Anonymousreply 35May 7, 2025 8:21 PM

If there was just someone big enough to play her in the TV movie biopic....

by Anonymousreply 36May 8, 2025 3:38 PM

Can Meghan McCain act?

by Anonymousreply 37May 8, 2025 5:15 PM

Some relative of hers owned a tiny religious TV station in my hometown, and she would come to town every summer to do a concert in the park as a fundraiser.

Somehow, a friend of mine and I got roped into driving her around for the day.

She was very sweet and gave us each $50 when we took her back to the airport.

by Anonymousreply 38May 8, 2025 6:36 PM

thanks R38 what year might that have been?

by Anonymousreply 39May 8, 2025 7:58 PM

r38 Was that enough to cover the cost of new shock absorbers?

by Anonymousreply 40May 8, 2025 8:02 PM

Thanks R6

The Hager Twins - were featured in the second preview issue of Playgirl, February 1973.

I can't believe I never caught that issue

by Anonymousreply 41May 9, 2025 3:58 AM

r38 here

I was 16 or so, so probably 1988 or 1989.

Here's another thing I remember... When she was "off duty" she wore very flattering clothing, but when she was "performing" (actually on-stage or at a signing before the show) she wore a big old tent dress that made her look bigger.

I guess it was her trademark.
