Queer Fragility - What if Queer Liberation doesn't offer freedom?

What does it mean to be gay? Or even heterosexual? Is it defined by the body that one is born with? Or the presentation and modification of one's natal body? These questions surfaced while observing a Twitter controversy where an OnlyFans creator was attacked for performing with an FTM partner. At the heart of the pile-on was an anxious debate: what constitutes gayness? Can sex between a cis man and an FTM individual still be labeled homosexual?

This is not merely an abstract philosophical query. These questions gain real traction in a cultural moment obsessed with identity classification and moral performance. What about cis men who identify as homosexual but sleep with women? Or heterosexual men who sleep with men or trans women? Does the consistency of desire lend one more legitimacy to their identity than another? Is a "congenital homosexual"—someone who feels they have always been gay—more worthy of respect or rights than someone who chooses homosexuality as a mode of living, resisting heterosexual scripts?

The intensifying visibility of queer and trans people in the mainstream has surfaced contradictions that were once buried beneath political solidarity. During the campaign for marriage equality, these questions were set aside in favor of the universalizing rhetoric of "love is love." But in the wake of that political victory, the cracks have begun to show. Why is male bisexuality often treated with contempt by both straight women and gay men? Does this reflect a larger discomfort with sexual ambiguity?

I am very sorry, but my brain melted while reading thru "Defining Calvinist Lucidity"& then I DIED!!

by Anonymousreply 1April 24, 2025 6:50 PM

The older I get, the less patience I have for this type of navel gazing. No one asked for it, no one needs it.

by Anonymousreply 2April 24, 2025 6:55 PM

Very simple. Gay men are men who like men. Men who are willing to sleep with FTMs are bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 3April 24, 2025 7:06 PM

Word salad.

by Anonymousreply 4April 24, 2025 7:07 PM

Real (not Tumblr) sexual orientations are valid identities but they’re also social constructs.

Part of me believes a lot of people had to be doing it for it to become such an issue throughout history.

by Anonymousreply 5April 24, 2025 7:08 PM

From the link

[quote]Critics of ftm-inclusive porn highlights the tensions between homosexuals who insist that sexuality is based on biological sex and queerness where sexuality can hinge on subjective gender experience.

And this is why the whole queer thing is anti-gay.

by Anonymousreply 6April 24, 2025 7:10 PM

Nothing I like less on OF than seeing a guy playing with a FTM clit. And trying to convince us how hot it is.

by Anonymousreply 7April 24, 2025 7:11 PM

Agreed R6. I’m “gay” because I have an attraction to other males that I cannot control. A woman with hacked off tits dressed like a man does not turn me on and never will. God I hate what has happened to our community.

by Anonymousreply 8April 24, 2025 7:17 PM

R8 Exactly!

by Anonymousreply 9April 24, 2025 7:19 PM

Anyone who has a penis is a man, period.

Thus a woman can never be a man.

I gave up on “The Advocate” when they had the article, “How to Date a Trans Man”.

So that’s how it’s going to be for the magazines that used to have those personals ads.

by Anonymousreply 12April 24, 2025 8:07 PM

Yes, of course

someone who feels they have always been gay—more worthy of respect or rights than someone who chooses homosexuality as a mode of living, resisting heterosexual scripts?

by Anonymousreply 13April 24, 2025 8:13 PM

“YOU MUST LOVE ME!”

by Anonymousreply 14April 24, 2025 8:30 PM

Liberation, period. We can move forward with universal equality based on mutual shared respect now, and THEN maybe some of the lines between blocs will soften so as not to offend people who don't want to be included with others. Be yourself. Make your own choices. Quit seeing the differences when it comes to equality, and sort things out on the individual level.

And for fuck's sake stop demanding that people who aren't into you MUST be into you or that someone else's attraction make one responsible for it.

Move along, toots.

Wow, I'm so glad somebody decided to post a new trans-bashing thread. It has been several seconds at least.

by Anonymousreply 17April 24, 2025 10:40 PM

In today's edition of "some opinions are better kept private."

by Anonymousreply 18April 24, 2025 10:48 PM

Clearly written by some college senior or freshly out of college who thinks he/she has something important to say.

All over a tweet about a gay porn performer filming content with FTM.

Don't waste your time writing BS like this - life is too short and nobody is going to read your 10,000 word essay using big words.

[quote] Why is male bisexuality often treated with contempt by both straight women and gay men?

One of the stupidest questions I’ve ever seen raised with a straight face.

by Anonymousreply 20April 24, 2025 11:13 PM

These kinds of ponderous, navel-gazing think pieces about sexuality are the very definition of tedious. Someone should clue in the authors of these meandering tomes of irrelevancy that no one outside of authors’ circlejerk bubble of online “influencers” could remotely give a shit. They never say anything novel, or new, or insightful, or revelatory. They are the written version of screeching fingernails across a chalkboard.

We all have our own kinds of sexualities, and I find it both insufferable and bizarre this concept that we are supposed to lie around all day in a perpetual self-reflection and examination of all of this, as nauseam. As I said, the utter height and dictionary definition pure tedium incarnate.

A lot of this shit isn’t nearly as deep as they desperately want to make it out to be. But then not all of us are complete self-obsessed narcissists either.

by Anonymousreply 21April 24, 2025 11:14 PM

I hate the term “Trans” so much. I’m a very visual person for whom that word conjures in me an image of a highway running through a giant hole carved through the bottom of the middle of a big mountain.

by Anonymousreply 22April 25, 2025 2:49 AM

Men will fuck any available hole. They've fucked men, women, children, farm animals, corpses, blow-up dolls, pillows, melons...

If you want one, fine. I just don't anymore. You can't turn them into a partner; they're always looking for a new hole.

by Anonymousreply 23April 25, 2025 3:15 AM

One of my academic ex-colleagues has written multiple 8000 word plus papers, published in peer reviewed queer/sexuality journals, on the politics of his preferred porn scene, or porn genre, or NSFW subreddits. The ability of a “queer” to waste hours writing on the meaning of a single porn tweet does not surprise me.

[quote] This is not merely an abstract philosophical query

Could have fooled me!

by Anonymousreply 25April 25, 2025 3:56 AM

Sexual orientation is in every sense biological. No one is sexually attracted to a subjective sense of identity or a stereotypical expression of one. When naked, nothing BUT biology counts. It is not a choice to be turned on by ideological decree - why do you think LGB people risk imprisonment and death to love another, if they could just choose differently? To suggest otherwise IS profoundly homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 26April 25, 2025 10:21 AM

Well said R26, sex is essentially biologically driven

by Anonymousreply 27April 25, 2025 1:16 PM

[quote]When naked, nothing BUT biology counts.

This is key, because despite DL incredulity and the persistent idea that one “always knows,” there are transmen who pass well enough and certainly are attractive (before the clothes come off, that is).

by Anonymousreply 28April 25, 2025 1:46 PM

Anything with the word “fragility” in the title is going to be self congratulatory mental masturbation.

by Anonymousreply 29April 25, 2025 8:07 PM

I grew up in a conservative Christian environment, so I have a lot of questions about sexuality.
