When we look back to The Golden Age we can easily tell the major stars, and their pecking order. Put these modern stars in the order from Biggest downwards. I'll put them in alphabetical order. Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Leo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr., Demi Moore, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis.
Whos the bigger Star?

Brad and Leo are the only two who still appeal To every generation of adults. Possibly Tom cruise, we shall see how the latest mission impossible does.
This is gonna be very hard for Datalounge to hear but after them, Timothy Chalamet and Zendaya trump everyone else on OPs list.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 24, 2025 8:11 PM |
No one on this list is under the age of 50.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 24, 2025 8:18 PM |
R9: Chalamet and his box office flops do not even come close to some of the people on OP’s list.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 25, 2025 3:15 AM |
Well one would hope not r11 given that most of them are 30+ years further along than he is. But we weren’t asked to rank by box office success we were asked to rank the biggest modern “stars” them given a last of well past their prime actors who are not representative of the current generation .
This is like asking us to rank the biggest stars of the 70s and then naming Shelly winters, Helen Hayes, gene kelly and Ava Gardner as our options

At this particular pop culture moment?
Leo
Cruise
Brad
Downey
Sandra
Demi
Julia
George
Johnny
Bruce
Agree that Denzel is glaringly absent.

Since when is Chalamet starring in flops, R11? Both Dune movies, Wonka, and A Complete Unknown all did well.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 25, 2025 3:52 AM |
I don’t think any of these have real power Mission Impossible is ending and Downey only does well in super hero films. Brad has F1 but he can’t keep doing facelifts. Sandra and Julia are maybe half the stars they used to be.

If you were to ask me which of those actors would be most likely to get a call from Robert Eggers, yorgos lanthimos, Ari Aster, Sean Baker, Greta Gerwig or Wes Anderson, it would be Brad, Leo or Demi- who really put herself back in the running with the substance. If she shows a similar bravery and adventurousness in her next projects she might enjoy a great late career.

Today's young people go to the movie theater to throw popcorn at each other during the Fortnite movie and maybe know 2 people on that list. The rest are only in old movies their parents watch.

R14: A Complete Unknown did not do well. $127M globally after two months of theatrical release.

At their height and how history will remember them
Tom Cruise
Julia Roberts
Tom Hanks
Leonardo DiCaprio/Brad Pitt
Denzel Washington
Current generations can't dictate trajectory because there are no longer any movie stars. They make Kim Kardashian a thing. Low brow, low attention crap. These generations don't get up and go to the movies so the lens of stars through their eyes is warped. But they all grew up and know the stars above.

At their core "stars" have always been likable actors you plug in to lead roles for mass commercial appeal.
Tom Cruise was a generation's "cocky young fill in the blank" (lawyer, bartender, sports agent, military guy, racer driver etc)
Julia Roberts was a generation's "pretty young girl next door fill in the blank damsel in distress" (law student, young wife, med student, reporter, etc)
Pretty young "fill in the blank" girl next door falling in love (hooker, writer, movie star, divorcee etc)

I like R19s list and would add Meryl Streep. She may not have been as big at the box office, but her imprint is indelible to movies. It's a pretty small list.
There is a huge transition happening now to younger stars, because as noted, all of these people are over 50 and will only go down in appeal, not up. It's a big test to see if the upcoming big budget movies starring older actors are worth it anymore (F1, Mission Impossible, the new PTA film with Leo, etc.).
Julia has a film coming out this year that will also be a big test, but more to see if she can still bring in audiences for an adult drama.

$139 million, actually, and that’s a good number for a Searchlight drama, R18. It’s considered a success, trust me.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 25, 2025 5:29 AM |
I think for Searchlight it was a a big gross but really an investment for Oscar nominations over profit. The spending was enormous and it lost money.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 25, 2025 6:01 AM |
Since losing the Oscar Demi is back where she started, sucking cocks for roles.

R22: It failed to make back a profit. It’s okay you can’t win them all.

Leo DiCaprio Tom Hanks Brad Pitt Tom Cruise George Clooney Keanu Denzel W/Whoopi G Angie Jo Julia Roberts RDJ / Winona R B Willis Demi Johnny D (my, how the mighty have fallen)

The older they get, the longer they’ve been around. They’re going to say and do things and lose appeal.

Both One Battle After Another and After The Hunt are getting released in theaters. That's really great to see. I hope it starts a shift back that way.
