I’m for getting sugar out of things. I always read the nutrition label before I buy any food and it’s very frustrating to have to put interesting things back on the shelf after seeing how many grams of added sugar there are in it.
One of the most ridiculous things is that there is an option to buy canned and packaged fruit “with no sugar added”. It should all be no sugar added! Apples, peaches, etc. are already sweet. It’s crazy to add sugar.

Both high fructose corn syrup and table sugar are not great, but R24 is correct. High fructose corn syrup is the worst because unlike table sugar, high fructose corn syrup can only be broken down by the liver, and can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

RFK Jr. and his MAHA have made things topsy-turvy, where red states are leading the way in doing the right thing by no longer allowing SNAP to be used for chips and pop. Blue states should join in.
[quote] Experts say the state efforts to add soda and candy to the prohibited list is likely to be effective in shifting SNAP recipients away from junk food.
[quote]"If they have to spend their own money on junk food, they're not going to buy as much junk food," Marion Nestle, a professor emerita of public health at New York University, told ABC News.

[quote]Why do the anti-sugar people tell us to eat fruit, when fruit is loaded with sugar?
[quote] Whole fruits are full of antioxidants and other nutrients and are high in fiber. Although fruits contain quite a bit of sugar, it is packaged inside cells, so digestive enzymes have to break down the cells to free fruit sugars, releasing them slowly into the bloodstream. When you eat an apple, you remain sated longer and are less likely to overeat than when you have a donut, whose sugar is immediately available.
[quote] Enjoy a variety of fruits, with one caution: stick to whole fruit instead of juice. The process of squeezing the fruit breaks open the cells, releasing the sugars. When you drink a glass of apple juice, you're going to get more sugar into your blood faster, and are likely to feel hungry sooner, than when you eat an apple.

Because R28, they're somewhat ill informed on the subject of sugar. I guess they think if something grows on a tree or bush, it's fine, but the fact is fruit is loaded with fructose, sucrose, and glucose. Just like table sugar.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 23, 2025 11:21 AM |
1) The alternatives to real cane sugar are HFCS and aspartame, both are worse and one causes cancer.
2) It will be impossible for retailers to enforce a snap ban of candy and soda.
3) Donald Rumsfeld was an evil cunt and RFK Jr is clearly mentally ill.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 23, 2025 11:41 AM |
R26 is talking nonsense. Here’s what AI has to say about it:
While both high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and table sugar (sucrose) contain fructose, the assertion that HFCS is worse because it can only be broken down by the liver is inaccurate. Both sweeteners are metabolically processed through the liver, and excessive consumption of either can contribute to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Here's a more detailed explanation: Metabolic Process: Both HFCS and sucrose are broken down into fructose and glucose, which are then primarily metabolized by the liver. Fructose Metabolism: The liver is the primary organ for fructose metabolism, and excess fructose consumption can lead to the conversion of fructose into fat, a process called lipogenesis. NAFLD: Excessive fructose intake, regardless of the source (HFCS or sucrose), can contribute to the development of NAFLD, a condition where too much fat accumulates in the liver. Similar Health Effects: Studies comparing HFCS and sucrose at similar doses have shown similar effects on body weight, insulin response, and feelings of fullness. One study found that the HFCS group had higher levels of CRP, a marker of inflammation. Other Factors: The overall amount of added sugar consumed, not just the source, is a major contributor to health problems like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

R28 and R34, fruit is loaded with very healthful vitamins, nutrients and fiber (which ensures a gradual absorption of sugar). Sugar in itself is not bad, the body does an excellent job of converting it into energy. The problem is megadoses of processed sugar that is consumed daily by most people.
I avoided fruit most of my life. I just didn't like the taste or texture. I forced myself to eat fruit everyday a few months ago. I love fruit now and eat a fruit mixture daily (one - two cups). It gives me a huge boost of energy and I think it has really improved my skin. To think eating a pear is like eating a Snickers bar is ludicrous.

From article at r29
[quote] "Controlling how the poor eat is a paternalistic response to a problem that is not based in SNAP recipients' inability to make good decisions about healthy foods."
I think the main problem for SNAP recipients is that the least expensive food is the highly-processed crap that is most readily available in food deserts. If you can't just hop in your SUV to drive five blocks to Whole Foods to spend $150 every other day, your options are limited.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 23, 2025 2:50 PM |
I'm talking nonsense R36? Watch your tone, Carol-Ann, and sip on a gallon of some high fructose corn syrup.
Here's an AI explanation. It's the LIVER. The liver can only break down fructose, and excess consumption can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Now go back to knitting your next caftan.

Years ago I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and several people told me there would be all kinds of fruits and even vegetables (!!) like carrots I wouldn't be able to eat because they had too much sugar in them. I asked my doctor, and she said that used to be a popular idea in some quarters, but in recent years dieticians and doctors have realized the amount of fiber in fruits mean they do not trigger diabetes for the most part. She warned me to stay away from exceptionally sweet tropical fruits like pineapple, but said I could have as much berries, apples, pears as I could handle. She said thinking your sugar levels could be raised by eating carrots, in particular, has now been thoroughly discounted. I took her advice, and I have not become diabetic,.
It's weird how old outdated medical advice still lingers in the popular imagination even when it's been largely discounted. When my sister got diverticultis a few years ago, so many people told her she was forbidden from eating sunflower seeds or popcorn, even though it's been known for several years that those foods actually do nothing to worsen diverticulosis. And I still know so many people who will not eat avocados or drink anything other than skim milk for fear they will get fat.

Fun fact: Hawaii (eventually) became a US state due to sugar tariffs. Why else would a few islands in the middle of a freaking ocean matter when Cuba was much closer. Sure militarily Hawaii was important but that came later, sugar in the late 1800s was the motivation to overthrow the monarchy and become a US territory.

Banning sugar-based options in schools is important. Some places have gone that route - but it was ridiculous what was going on in cafeterias 15-20 years ago. I have no idea what it looks like now, but I'd have to hope it is better.
We've allowed food manufacturers to run amok with ingredients - but I don't think anyone will have much success in tackling that.

[quote]One of the most ridiculous things is that there is an option to buy canned and packaged fruit “with no sugar added”. It should all be no sugar added! Apples, peaches, etc. are already sweet. It’s crazy to add sugar.
It's really not that ridiculous. To survive the canning process, fruit generally has to be underripe. The food canner has to add sugar to make the fruit taste like fully ripe fruit. Canning also reduces the flavor of fruit and sugar helps to make it more edible. In addition, the fruit will not survive storage as well in the can without sugar. In addition, if you are buying sugar -free canned fruit, they are often canned in fruit juice or concentrated fruit juice (i.e., a lot of natural sugars). Whether those natural sugars are any better for you than refined sugars is questionable. For example, drinking apple juice isn't much better than drinking sugar water.
There is a huge amount of unnecessary sugar in the American diet, but their use in canned goods is long-standing and has some logical justification. Sugar has been almost universal in canning fruit since canning began. If you want edible fruit without sugar, you usually have to eat fresh fruit or one of the fruits that freeze well.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 25, 2025 4:48 PM |
I asked a gastroenterologist how to avoid sugar in my diet. He said “you can’t, it’s in just about everything” and that you just have to be aware of how much you’re eating and act accordingly.
And, as above, that fresh fruit is the best way to wean yourself from white sugar. I love fresh squeezed OJ, and sure, a segmented orange is messier, but eating it tastes the same and the benefit is extra fiber that’s good in your gut.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 25, 2025 5:10 PM |
R63 -that's not necessarily true. Sugar is found in prepared, canned and processed foods. Buy whole foods and reduce pre-made and packaged foods.
There's a big difference between sugar content and added sugars.
But people LOVE their 'flavored' yogurts (all sugar), their macchiato with 2 pumps of vanilla (all sugar), their frozen yogurt (more sugar), protein bars (added sugars), etc.
People are absolutely stupid about ingredients and nutrition. You can avoid 95% of all the sugar thrown at us - very easily.
