Stars Who Are Done But Don't Accept It
I'll start with two easy ones: Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez.
Katy's musical career is finished and she keeps pushing so hard with pr stunts that now she's just hated.
JLo is in a similar place...her music career is over but at least she might still eke out an acting career.
Who else?

JLo is not going to get a career renaissance with "Kiss" - people are fucking SICK of her ass.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds.
Tom Cruise is over but keeps pumping out shitty action movies.
Billy Ray Cyrus (wish he'd take his daughter Miley with him).

Clooney needs to retire. He has enough money between movies and child slave labor picking his Nespresso coffee beans. Most of his movies flop, he looks ill, his good looks have faded and he looks older than his age. He's not leading man material any longer and he's not strong enough an actor to be a character actor. JLo is a serviceable actress with the right roles but her career is/was almost entirely based on sex appeal and we all know that don’t last. All things considered, she still looks amazing, but at this point she’s hanging on by novelty status as an aging woman who’s still seen as fuckable.

Barbra has entered the talk-singing phase of her career, much like Sinatra and so many others before her.
If she had played it smart like Cher and threw out a catchy, highly-produced dance song every so often she would have had much more longevity and relevance. Alas, she always defaults to beige.

I hate to put Jessica Lange in this category, but recent evidence suggests she can barely get a film made and even when it’s finished, it can’t get released or it gets thrown to cable.
She and Ed Harris tried to sell their film “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” but no distributor would touch it.
She also has a movie in development on Joan Didion’s “The Year of Magical Thinking,” but this also seems like a dud film that no one will want to book in theatres.
Sure she could come back with a Ryan Murphy show, or maybe do another play, but at her age she may have to hang up her delusions of being a movie actress.

With a few exceptions, most actors over 40 or 50 are not going to be as successful as they were when they were younger.
Even Meryl has had difficulty recently getting projects underway that go out to market, although she can get multimillion salaries for certain projects. Denzel Al’s still strong. Tom Hanks fading.
The whole movie business is collapsing due to dwindling movie audiences. Cable and streaming help but entertainment is geared towards young people who want young stars.

Meryl was never a huge box office draw. Aside from Prada, I can't think of a single film where her name was the reason people went to see it.
A lot of her hype in the late 2000's was just that. People got tired of her being forced down their throats and not giving others in her peer group a fair chance.
And you can bitch me out all you want, but Glenn, Frances and even Julia aren't doing second rate supporting work on a Steve Martin streaming show.

Streep has had several box office hits, not just one. She also was a big draw in her 50's, so the 2000s were full of additional hits for her. You may not like her, but she has been very successful including at the box office.
That said, I doubt she could have a box office hit again in her 70s, unless it was a sequel to a previously successful film. She'll probably do small parts from here on out unless it's a fluke that can get financing.

Katy must be livid. Her three big peers are still crazy relevant:
- Taylor is now the biggest pop in the world. By miles. And miles.
- Gaga just had one of the most successful Coachella's ever. Her new album is a big hit with critics and has sold nearly five million copies in about a month. Her song Die With A Smile is also one of the biggest hits in years and is poised to be the most streamed song of all time.
- Rihanna is a billionaire, hasn't released an album in a decade and still out streams Katy by miles. If Rihanna ever makes music again? We all know it would be huge.
Then there's Katy. No sales. No streams. No buzz. Nothing.
Poor thing.

The past has been rewritten but while she was a huge singles artist, she could never sell albums or tickets. For someone who had 6 #1 singles on one album, “Teenage Dream” only sold like 1.5-2 million during its first run.

Someone hit the nail on the head earlier with Tom Hanks. He used to fancy himself the mayor of Hollywood and he’s now box-office poison.
His face looks like he’s melting and the Mr. Nice Guy act just doesn’t fly in these complicated times. His past films mostly seem dated now and his limitations as a performer have become more obvious.
He mostly refused to play anything but a good guy and the result is a limited portfolio and not much to offer as an actor. I don’t even think Marvel wants him in a film.
Apple TV films no one talks about or remembers aren’t anything to brag about.
Does anyone actually miss seeing Tom Hanks onscreen?

R104, can you provide evidence that Katy has more album sales than Gaga in the US?
Considering Gaga has a couple more albums and the second best female selling album of the 2000s (after Adele), I find that claim very hard to believe.
Sales wise, Katy has one successful album (One of the Boys), two massive albums, (Teenage Dream, Prism), one decent album (Witness) and two bombs (Smile, 143).
Sales wise, Gaga has one crazy, huge massive album (or two massive albums for The Fame/Monster), two massive albums (Born This Way, ASIB), two decent albums (Artpop, Chromatica) one bomb (Joanne) and her new album which is selling great. Plus two jazz albums - one of which sold quite well. She also has a couple of remix albums that sold decently, considering.
Further, Chartmasters has Gaga at 96 million albums sales. Katy at 75 million. Granted, that's worldwide, but I just find it hard to believe that huge gap doesn't translate to the US as well.

OP here and a lot of you are just posting names of artists you don't care for.
There are different levels of stars. If you reach those top levels, you don't really drop unless you hugely fuck up or "retire" and no one cares anymore. No, Meryl isn't getting a ton of starring movie roles anymore but...she's still fucking Meryl Streep. She ain't "done". Same for Tom Hanks and Denzel. Now, that's not saying that some of them don't have highly inflated opinions of themselves and their talent and their star power but...even ego maniacs like Hanks and Denzel are still held in higher regard than poor sad ole dumb Katy Perry. Unless they really fuck up, Meryl and Tom and Denzel are going to get pursued for juicy character roles and cameos with star billing, until they're dead.

I don't know who the poster(s?) are that think "Kiss" is going to be some phenomenal movie - it's not.
JLo's flack here?

“Kiss of the Spider Woman” is the musical sensation of the year. Oscar will crown it with gold come February. JLo has never looked younger, more breathtaking or exhibited more talent. She’s a cinematic revelation.

[quote]is going to be some phenomenal movie
I didn't say it was phenomenal. I said it was going to be one of the most talked about movies. There's a huge difference, and if you don't know that, you shouldn't be posting on this thread.
One thing JLo knows how to do is create buzz. And the media will run with it.
Watch.

JLo will win the Oscar for “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” ushering in a new era of cinema.
No one has ever given a greater performance and no one ever will.

Jennifer Lopez should stick strictly to acting. She’s quite a good actor. Trying to remain multihyphenate star is her downfall.

Chita who? That’s what the world will be saying once JLo illuminates the silver screen in the future Oscar winner “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”

JLo ignites cinema with her scorching hot performance in “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”
She will set moviegoers ablaze with a portrayal that combines carnality with vocal power and pulsates moviegoers with an unforeseen heat.
This one’s a winner folks. Mark my words.

I don’t think it’s unlikely Streep could win again. All she needs is the right role. Will she ever have 5 best actress Oscars? Doubtful. But don’t count her out.
She needed time to separate from her husband and meet five grandchildren that are now on the payroll.

People say I like everything. But I LOVE “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” Jennifer Lopez redefines the femme fatale for a new generation with her youth, beauty and powerhouse vocals.
The Oscar race for 2026 is over. Just hand JLo the trophy now.

I guess that depends on what definition of relevant you're using, r169. They've made financially successful movies in the last 20 years but their enormous hits are in the distant past (Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Indiana Jones, Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver). Are people going to be talking about The Irishman and The Post in another 20 years? It's possible but I doubt it. I think it's fair to say that those two men are long past their creative prime.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | April 23, 2025 6:36 AM

I think The Irishman will be talked about for no reason other than being the first movie with Scorsese and Pacino. It's also a great companion to Goodfellas and Casino. It's not as good as those two movies, but it sits nicely beside them.
Spielberg hasn't had a great film since Lincoln.

R175 I don't. She takes advantage of every single opportunity to be in the public eye and stay relevant. It's been reported she just signed on to star in a movie. Still working, still making the interview rounds, still tipping off the paparazzi to take her picture when she's leaving Spago in Beverly Hills.

After the $8 ticket debacle last year, JLo is now devoting her new tour to shady parts of Europe and the Middle East.
I can’t imagine the types of Interpol’s Most Wanted who will show up for these events. You can almost smell the mix of sweat, Aramis and cumin.
If “Kiss of the Spider Woman” flops, she will likely become the bride of some oil sheik, so the dick hunt begins.

Kutcher did do the show The Ranch with Sam Elliott, after Two and a Half Men. It ran about 4 seasons I think. He also had an illness where he couldn't see, hear or walk, for a while. (Vasculitis.)

Paul McCartney: I really like a lot of his work, but IMO the last good album he did was Flaming Pie. Since Give My Regards to Broad Street, he has affected a MOR singing style something Barbra's. He's a billionaire, so he probably doesn't need the money.
Ringo likes to perform. So every once in a while he does another tour.

R141 Meryls Streep is 75 years old. Around the age when Kate Hepburn won her last Oscar. There aren't a lot of great roles for 75 year old women, and anyway, maybe she's slowing down a bit. I'm not a big fan, but after all you can't expect people to be lining up around the block for actresses in their mid-70s, or for those actresses to compete in popularlity with younger women.

[quote] In what alternate reality is JLo quite a good actor?
This reality.
She has always been a solid, reliable, everywoman presence in what was in the prior to the 2010s standard studio B-movie fare - lady cops, wrong-side-of-the-tracks romantic heroines, woman-in-peril roles. Not everyone can do that. Coppola, Stone, Rafelson and Soderbergh cast her for a reason.

Jennifer Lopez would still be regarded as a respectable actress if she hadn’t pursued that trashy pop career and hadn’t adopted “JLo” as her public persona.

R206 I have to agree. But, she wanted it all...to be a megastar multi-hyphenate who can do it all.
She never figured out she isn't really a good singer. And, pop stars have a short shelf life especially when they're not that great or don't have that many beloved hits.
