And Then There Were None (2015)

Does anyone remember this charming and faithful BBC adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic?

with Aidan Turner, Charles Dance. Toby Stephens, Maeve Dermody, Burn Gorman, Miranda Richardson, Noah Taylor, Douglas Booth, Anna Maxwell Martin, and Sam Neill

My favorite of the numerous adaptations by far. The grey, foreboding tone, the exterior scenes showing the bleak isolation, terrific performances, and the original ending!

Chef’s kiss.

Love Sam Neill

by Anonymousreply 2April 19, 2025 6:28 PM

Turner was hot.

R3 very much so

I thought it was a good adaptation (maybe a tad long) but I would never describe the material as "charming". A bit too dark to be described that way.

And, while I appreciated it visually as a fan of man flesh, all the men running around in their towels and their super fit, contemporary gym muscled bodies did take me a bit out of the 1938 setting.

by Anonymousreply 5April 19, 2025 6:59 PM

I have this on DVD. An excellent adaptation. I also have the much earlier one from 1945.

by Anonymousreply 6April 19, 2025 7:01 PM

The 1945 Rene Clair version, even with its 'happy ending', is very good.

The ridiculous 60s/70s remakes with the locales changed to ski lodges and oasis palaces are just idiotic.

by Anonymousreply 7April 19, 2025 7:04 PM

I like this version as I finally understood what Christie meant when she was describing the house as not some old manse but open and contemporary.

I don’t know much about the architectural styles back then.

by Anonymousreply 8April 19, 2025 7:10 PM

I'd tongue Douglas Booth right in his tight pink bum hole, then take his load all over my face, right in front of the pious old spinster, child-drowning nanny and drunken doctor!

by Anonymousreply 9April 19, 2025 7:32 PM

It's strange that this one was so good and the others successively ever more terrible.

by Anonymousreply 10April 19, 2025 7:39 PM

[quote] I'd tongue Douglas Booth right in his tight pink bum hole, then take his load all over my face, right in front of the pious old spinster, child-drowning nanny and drunken doctor!

One little Indian longing for cum Drowned in a hosing, and then there were none

by Anonymousreply 11April 19, 2025 7:41 PM

I wouldn’t call it “charming”, too foreboding and atmospheric for that!

It was definite best of the Christie adaptations of that era. In spite of its darkness and chill there was real life and emotion. Witness For The Prosecution and the rest were dour and humourless.

by Anonymousreply 12April 19, 2025 7:54 PM

I thought the doctor was hot. I was waiting for him to hook up with the homophobic cop.

by Anonymousreply 13April 19, 2025 7:58 PM

Why didn’t they use the original title?

R14 lolol

by Anonymousreply 15April 19, 2025 10:30 PM

R24, as backward as the US is, somebody at the US publishing house was like, “Let’s rethink that title.”

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2025 10:34 PM

Yes, they changed it to Ten Little Indians

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2025 10:48 PM

Douglas Booth is gorgeous

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2025 11:01 PM

No, according to that. Wikipedia article, the American title from 1940 was always “And Then There Were None” although a later paperback edition used “Ten Little Indians.”

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2025 11:01 PM

Beautiful diverse cast.

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2025 11:03 PM

The IMMORTAL Maeve Dermondy

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2025 11:22 PM

Douglas Booth was hot

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2025 11:30 PM

R21, Maeve Dermondy is the perfect femme fatale. When we first meet her, she’s sad and vulnerable, but Adrian Quinn’s character instantly sees her for the no-good tramp she really is. Their chemistry is terrific.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2025 11:33 PM

AS good as Gosford Park

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2025 11:45 PM

Since the book was published, the nursery rhyme has changed from N****** to Indians to Sailor Boys/Soldier Boys, etc. Here's a new, DataLounge-inspired take on it:

Ten little gay boys went out to dine;

One choked on the hung waiter and then there were nine.

Nine little gay boys sat up very late;

One slept with Dahmer and then there were eight.

Eight little gay boys dancing in Heaven;

One said he'd stay there and then there were seven.

Seven little gay boys giving asses licks;

One got amoebic dysentery and then there were six.

Six little gay boys staying in a dive;

A homeless man fucked one and then there were five.

Five little gay boys presenting hole for more;

A ten-incher fucked one and then there were four.

Four little gay boys going out to sea;

A horny sailor swallowed one and then there were three.

Three little gay boys walking in the zoo;

A big bear hugged one and then there were two.

Two Little gay boys sitting in the sun;

One got gang banged and then there was one.

One little gay boy left all alone;

He found a well-hung dad and then there were none.

by Anonymousreply 25April 20, 2025 12:06 AM

[quote] Ten little gay boys

Is that what one gets in paradise if martyred?

That hot doctor, R13, is Dame Maggie Smith's son, Toby Stephens. I fell in lust with him on the Netflix Lost in Space reboot. He's a helluva fine actor as well as a sexy beast.

by Anonymousreply 27April 20, 2025 12:32 AM

I loved Tony Stephens as Mr Rochester opposite Ruth Wilson’s Jane Eyre.

He hasn’t done many blockbuster American movies after being somewhat burned by Die Another Day.

by Anonymousreply 28April 20, 2025 3:22 AM

I like Toby Stephens in almost everything I've seen him in

by Anonymousreply 32April 20, 2025 4:35 AM

Ooh, I’ll bet!

by Anonymousreply 33April 20, 2025 4:50 AM

First saw Maeve Dermody in a movie that was a sort of Australian “Jaws” but with a crocodile instead of a shark.

She was very good in it.

Then I literally never saw her again. So I’m delighted to see her pop up again. Sounds like she moved to the UK?

by Anonymousreply 34April 20, 2025 5:23 AM

I agree with the comments about Douglas Booth -- he was at peak twink beauty a decade ago when this was made.

by Anonymousreply 37April 20, 2025 7:51 AM

I was always more of a Charles Dance man myself

by Anonymousreply 38April 20, 2025 2:34 PM

Is Douglas Booth of at least partial non-British Isles descent?

by Anonymousreply 39April 20, 2025 10:11 PM

All three episodes are on YouTube so I just watched it. Surprisingly faithful to the original book -though I greatly appreciated the extended scenes of Aiden Turner clad in nothing but a towel. Lord, that man was hot as fuck!

by Anonymousreply 40April 21, 2025 4:43 AM

For R39:

"Booth's father is English, and his mother is of Spanish and Dutch ancestry."

polDARK

by Anonymousreply 42April 21, 2025 12:44 PM

Maeve Dermondy used to date Sam Worthington.

I first saw her in Rachel Ward’s directorial debut Beautiful Kate opposite Ben Mendelsohn, Rachel Griffiths and Bryan Brown.

[quote] "Booth's father is English, and his mother is of Spanish and Dutch ancestry."

Thanks, R41. That confirmed what I thought.

by Anonymousreply 44April 21, 2025 6:47 PM

It finally clicked that I saw Aiden Turner onstage in London in the Lieutenant of Inishmore back in 2018. I fell in lust with him back then, too.

by Anonymousreply 45April 21, 2025 7:30 PM

I just want to see his dick, I bet it's as perfect as the rest of him.

by Anonymousreply 46April 21, 2025 7:33 PM

In the play there was a scene of him in underwear that definitely gave more the VPL...

by Anonymousreply 47April 21, 2025 7:37 PM

Aiden Turner should be the next James Bond

by Anonymousreply 48April 22, 2025 4:02 AM

I'd prefer him as a porn star.

by Anonymousreply 49April 22, 2025 4:04 AM

r48 I think Broccoli saw him as too ethnic-adjacent or maybe too short, I forgot what the rationale was in that Bond speculation thread we had a couple of years ago. Of course, all that's now moot, gods know what Amazon will do with the franchise.

by Anonymousreply 50April 22, 2025 4:17 AM

[quote] I think Broccoli saw him as too ethnic-adjacent

What does that mean?

by Anonymousreply 51April 22, 2025 4:21 AM

Means vaguely ethnic. Which could scare the usual suspects in the audience.

by Anonymousreply 52April 22, 2025 4:24 AM

He's white and about 6'. WTF?

by Anonymousreply 53April 22, 2025 4:29 AM

He's so fucking hairy, I don't blame Babs for seeing him as semi-Moorish.

God, he's just so perfect in every way. I don't understand why all those sluts he fucked in college don't speak up as to the nature of his beautiful cock. I'd be tattling to all the tabloids I could if I had that particular notch on my bedpost.

Douglas must be in his 30s now and married. He didn't make much of an impression as he was killed off so soon in the episode, but he was stunning

by Anonymousreply 55April 22, 2025 7:49 AM

R55, here is a publicity still of Douglas from the production:

It’s Aidan with two “a”s.

There’s also an Aiden Turner so it’s confusing.

by Anonymousreply 57April 22, 2025 8:24 AM

Lot's of sexy guys in this version of the story. I know people who are hot for each of them.

by Anonymousreply 58April 22, 2025 6:31 PM

Thank you op this is the best adaptation of And Then There Were None and, in my view, of all Agatha Christie’s books (including the famous ones from the 70s).

The performances are perfection all around and I think it helps there isn’t a too notch A list celebrity. It is very well rounded .

The modern , marbled, mansion is exactly as described in the book, as well as the island, no corners for the murderer to hide in easily.

The tension is high, the mood bleak and there are few attempts of humour. It follows the book (written at the start of the second world war).

Sarah Phelps said she was unfamiliar with Agatha Christie, it is a pity her next adaptations went haywire, but this is a classic.

As mentioned, everyone does more than an excellent job (the actress playing Vera is astounding), but i have a soft spot for Toby Stephens in the hysterical, dissolute, Dr. Armstrong (in a very homoerotic performance). The whole thing was homerotic.

by Anonymousreply 59April 24, 2025 10:29 PM

Aidan Turner. But Aiden. Different actor.

by Anonymousreply 60April 24, 2025 11:07 PM

Even when Turner played a dwarf in “The Hobbit”, it was hard to hide how good looking he is.

by Anonymousreply 61April 25, 2025 1:30 AM

Sam Neill as General McArthur says some sort of racy things in this about Jews.

by Anonymousreply 62April 25, 2025 1:43 AM

People said Turner resembled Ian Somerhalder.

I posted on the show's thread when this came out originally – including going gaga over Aidan and posting many shirtless Tumblr shots of him – and there wasn't much interest in it. So it's interesting to see how the sentiment has changed, possibly due to other, much blander BBC Christie adaptations that have come since.

by Anonymousreply 65April 25, 2025 9:56 AM

Miranda Richardson was also quite good!
