Get a First Look at Just In Time on Broadway, Starring Jonathan Groff

The Bobby Darin musical will open April 26 at Circle in the Square.

Broadway's Bobby Darin musical Just in Time began previews March 31, and production photos are now pulling back the curtain on Darin's time at the Copacabana. The production is set to officially open April 26, with an opening celebration April 23. The production plays Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre, which has been transformed into the intimate nightclub.

With Groff starring as Darin, the musical also features Erika Henningsen (Mean Girls), Tony winner Michele Pawk (Wicked), Joe Barbara (A Bronx Tale The Musical), Drama Desk nominee Emily Bergl (Good Night, Oscar), Gracie Lawrence (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Lance Roberts (The Music Man), Caesar Samayoa (Come From Away), Christine Cornish (Kiss Me, Kate), Julia Grondin (Funny Girl), Valeria Yamin (Moulin Rouge!), John Treacy Egan (My Fair Lady), Tari Kelly (Mr. Saturday Night), Matt Magnusson (A Wonderful World), Khori Michelle Petinaud (Lempicka), and Larkin Reilly (Bad Cinderella).

Tony winner Alex Timbers is at the helm of the immersive staging. The show tracks Darin's life story and features Tony winner Jonathan Groff performing his greatest hits, including "Beyond the Sea," "Splish Splash," and "Mack the Knife."

Groff is charming and gorgeous in the show and Gracie Lawrence is a great new find with a powerhouse voice

by Anonymousreply 2April 19, 2025 1:56 AM

R2 is Groff's publicist . I am SO tired of Miss Groff . Are there no other gay males in the acting world ?

by Anonymousreply 3April 19, 2025 2:02 AM

It's a great show. It's a cross between "an immersive theater experience" and a "jukebox musical". He doesn't try to look like Darin or fully imitate his singing style. Groff is always on stage and keeps the energy going. It covers Darrin's life but avoids the perils of biopic mode which made Spacey's dreary movie so unpleasant to watch.

The first half is stronger than the second, partly because it has a more going on in the story. There isn't much to the Sandra Dee storyline, but given that she wasn't much of an actress and they didn't have much of a marriage, there isn't much to work with there.

It's difficult to believe that Groff is now 40, and older than Darrin was when he died.

by Anonymousreply 4April 19, 2025 2:30 AM

Bitch stole my act

by Anonymousreply 5April 19, 2025 2:39 AM

R3 - no one cares if you're tired of him. We're not.

by Anonymousreply 6April 19, 2025 2:58 AM

Isn’t Groff gay? Bobby Darin was straight.

by Anonymousreply 7April 19, 2025 5:58 AM

R7 yes and incredibly his gayness has not rendered him incapable of hitting the same notes as a straight man. A thing unheard of in Broadway history

by Anonymousreply 8April 19, 2025 6:02 AM

"He doesn't try to look like Darin or fully imitate his singing style..."

You go, girl.

by Anonymousreply 9April 19, 2025 9:44 AM

for potential ticket buyers who are familiar with Darin, casting Groff is a non starter.

by Anonymousreply 10April 19, 2025 11:53 AM

I’m still upset there won’t be any more “Mindhunter.”

by Anonymousreply 11April 19, 2025 12:10 PM

Please knife this mack of a show

by Anonymousreply 12April 19, 2025 12:22 PM

"for potential ticket buyers who are familiar with Darin..."

And exactly how many of those people are there? It's not like Darin was Elvis with thousands and thousands of screaming fans. I doubt it's enough to sustain this production for very long. It's not like Bobby Darin is a household name.

And I'd guess a good percentage of Darin's fans are wheel-chair bound or in nursing homes and or/not willing to part with $200-300 for a single ticket.

by Anonymousreply 13April 19, 2025 12:34 PM

My friend loved it. Just got tickets.

by Anonymousreply 14April 19, 2025 12:37 PM

Who plays Connie Francis and Sandra Dee?

by Anonymousreply 15April 19, 2025 3:25 PM

R13: There were plenty of people old enough to remember Darin and they seemed to enjoy it. What is more remarkable is that it attracted younger people who wouldn't remember him.

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2025 3:29 PM

Sure, Jan.

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2025 3:52 PM

I like Groff as a person. I find him incredibly boring as an actor

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2025 4:15 PM

He’s even more boring in bed.

R20 = Groff.

Spill every gruesome yet boring detail, R19.

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2025 5:21 PM

R19 = Zachary Quinto

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2025 5:21 PM

What's his hole like, R19?

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2025 5:32 PM

Not “Italian clean.”

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2025 5:33 PM

Sometimes good theater just involves an extroverted person singing and pretending to be somebody else.

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2025 5:34 PM

That’s great if you’re in the 10th grade at La Guardia HS.

In the real world, not so much.

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2025 5:37 PM

He gave me a big hug once. Love him.

by Anonymousreply 27April 19, 2025 5:55 PM

how many pieces in the orchestra?

I'd love to hear the band if the arrangements are authentic to the era

by Anonymousreply 28April 19, 2025 6:08 PM

Will they be interpolating "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee"?

by Anonymousreply 29April 19, 2025 7:38 PM

[quote]R27 He gave me a big hug once. Love him.

This is assault.

by Anonymousreply 30April 19, 2025 9:42 PM

I get Bobby Darin mixed up with someone else. I think Johnnie Ray.

by Anonymousreply 31April 19, 2025 9:51 PM

R19 that’s still hot.

by Anonymousreply 32April 19, 2025 10:06 PM

Jonathan Groff is a very "earnest" performer.

by Anonymousreply 33April 20, 2025 1:42 AM

I have always found him to be lovely.

by Anonymousreply 34April 20, 2025 1:47 AM

R31 I get Jonathan Groff mixed up with Kaye Ballard.

by Anonymousreply 35April 20, 2025 2:00 AM

R15 Gracie Lawrence plays Connie. She was on Kelly Clarkson singing Who's Sorry Now the other day.

by Anonymousreply 36April 20, 2025 2:38 AM

R31=Dorothy Kilgallen

by Anonymousreply 37April 20, 2025 2:47 AM

I saw a reading. Groff has none of Darin’s sex or swagger.

by Anonymousreply 38April 20, 2025 2:49 AM

We are taking a group of clients to see it in June, if it's still running of course.

by Anonymousreply 39April 20, 2025 2:50 AM

The set looks like it's trying to compensate for something.

by Anonymousreply 40April 20, 2025 4:34 AM

R31: Johnnie Ray had a different style and predated Darin by quite a number of years.

by Anonymousreply 41April 20, 2025 11:57 AM

Groff doing the Neil Sedaka story .... that can't be too far in the future?

by Anonymousreply 42April 20, 2025 3:14 PM

Now that’s a role that fits! If they could see me now, holy cow!

Bobby Darin looked older than he actually was. He looked 40 when he was in his 20s.

[quote]Who plays Connie Francis and Sandra Dee?

Harvey Fierstein and Bruce Vilanch.

by Anonymousreply 45April 20, 2025 4:19 PM

I thought the show was a delight. Groff is as charming as it gets. And he sure is easy on the eyes.

R39 It's been selling out. I think you'll be seeing the show in June. Groff is popular and it's a small venue so easier to sell out which looks good and gets people excited to see a "hot" show.

by Anonymousreply 50April 27, 2025 10:21 PM

This reminds me when that Kevin Spacey Darin biopic came out. Roger Elbert declared in his review that Spacey is a better singer than Darin. One of the biggest laughs I’ve ever had listening to a movie critic.

Seriously, Bobby Darin was a big success on the night club circuit after a few hit records, but biopics? Broadway shows?

by Anonymousreply 51April 27, 2025 11:14 PM

It’s a dramatic story given his tumultuous relationships and early death. I don’t know why Spacey was so into playing the character though, which is probably the only reason that film got greenlit — he was way too old for it.

by Anonymousreply 52April 27, 2025 11:52 PM

Early death is the ONLY reason Bobby Darin gets any attention in 2025.

by Anonymousreply 53April 28, 2025 12:11 AM

Should've been me!

by Anonymousreply 54April 28, 2025 12:44 AM

Today on "CBS News Sunday Morning," Darin's son said he never recovered from learning at 36 that his sister was actually his mother. And mother was his grandmother.

What Oscar nomination?

R55 well he didn’t have much time to recover from it. I’m not sure how his son would know that though since he was just a kid at the time?

by Anonymousreply 65April 28, 2025 10:43 AM

Although less impressed with the musical itself, Jesse Green, the Times’s theater critic, found Jonathan Groff “sensational” in his portrayal of Bobby Darin. “I have to admit he’s giving one of Broadway’s best performances.”

by Anonymousreply 66April 28, 2025 11:16 AM

True, 65. So much “information” from so many children of celebrities who weren’t there or way to young to have understood what was happening with their famous parents. They read about it like the rest of us.

by Anonymousreply 67April 28, 2025 11:53 AM

It was too tough for little Bobby…
