James Brolin Reveals the Secret to Marriage with Barbra Streisand:

James Brolin shared some of the secrets to his long-lasting marriage to Barbra Streisand.

During a Tuesday, April 15 appearance on the Today show, the 84-year-old actor was asked about his relationship with the 82-year-old Funny Girl star. The couple has been together for 29 years after being introduced on a blind date in July 1996. They exchanged vows two years later.

How have they managed to stay together this long?

"The best investment we’ve ever made is our mattress," Brolin said. "And don’t misunderstand me. We’re both lazy. We love to sleep late. We do a lot of our work on the phone, on paper, reading, right next to each other."

Brolin shared another trick that has helped them keep their love strong. "You learn to take a walk. Both of us, not just me! I just think you gotta say, ‘Okay, take a deep breath, take a walk,' " he explained.

He continued: "Because animals do the same thing, you know? Humans do it to each other, animals do it to each other."

Before meeting in the '90s, Streisand had previously been married to Elliott Gould between 1963 and 1971. Brolin was previously attached to Jan Smithers and Jane Cameron Agee. After meeting in July 1996, the couple tied the knot exactly two years after they met on July 1, 1998.

Streisand celebrated her anniversary with a sweet post on Instagram in July 2024. "28 years today since we met honey… and 26 years today since we married!" she gushed, adding, "Love you. B ❤️."

This is not the first time that Brolin has shared similar advice about maintaining a strong relationship.

"I think everybody needs to be a negotiator," he told PEOPLE in September 2022. "Everybody needs to have patience and know when to take a walk."

He sounds p whipped.

by Anonymousreply 1April 16, 2025 1:27 AM

What mattress did they buy ? That is the question !

by Anonymousreply 2April 16, 2025 1:59 AM

I'm sure he just went downstairs to Barbra's mall and bought whatever brand mattress was there.

by Anonymousreply 3April 16, 2025 2:03 AM

Rule #1: Whatever she says, goes.

by Anonymousreply 4April 16, 2025 2:31 AM

James Brolin Reveals the Secret to Marriage with Barbra Streisand:

Benzos. Lots of them (the mall has a pharmacy, thank God).

by Anonymousreply 5April 16, 2025 2:35 AM

His ego must be much less than hers. Isn't everyone's? Hey, maybe she's mellowed in old age, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

by Anonymousreply 6April 16, 2025 2:49 AM

This will inspire Diane Warren to write an emotional ballad "If This Mattress Could Talk," which Barbra will feel obligated to record.

by Anonymousreply 7April 16, 2025 2:53 AM

Wait is the Peppers waterbed franchise still open in the mall? I've been doing the opening shifts at the Chess King by the JC Penney on the opposite end of the mall for too long!!!

by Anonymousreply 8April 16, 2025 3:15 AM

Barbra's fave rebuff is Take a hike!

by Anonymousreply 9April 16, 2025 3:17 AM

And here I was thinking that it was his industrial-strength set of earplugs welded in place with wax?!

by Anonymousreply 10April 16, 2025 3:24 AM

Happy wife. Happy life.

by Anonymousreply 11April 16, 2025 3:59 AM

[QUOTE] What mattress did they buy ? That is the question !

Probably some $20,000 Tempur-Pedic that’s adjustable with massaging and cooling and heating. I wouldn’t get out of bed either if I slept on that.

by Anonymousreply 12April 16, 2025 4:06 AM

R7 - but it won’t win any awards, will it.

by Anonymousreply 13April 16, 2025 5:31 AM

He says the same stuff in this interview.

BDF is the secret

by Anonymousreply 15April 16, 2025 11:07 AM

I would hit that ! I would sneak a Cialis in his coffee every morning for " boom boom" time.

by Anonymousreply 16April 16, 2025 11:25 AM

Did he do it for the money?

by Anonymousreply 17April 17, 2025 12:49 AM

Barbra has the man, mattress, and mall I want and deserve.

by Anonymousreply 18April 17, 2025 1:02 AM

Are they still fucking at their age?

by Anonymousreply 19April 17, 2025 1:21 AM

I thought his secret was cataracts.

by Anonymousreply 20April 17, 2025 1:22 AM

Barbra's fave rebuff is Take a hike!

Just not in those words. GTFOH.

by Anonymousreply 21April 17, 2025 8:35 AM

Theyre doing well, it looks like they both avoid the Hollywood lifestyle and just live their best lives. Good for them. He still looks great.

by Anonymousreply 22April 17, 2025 9:42 AM

Barbra was nearing her mid-50s when she met Brolin and then married him, two years later. The've been together for nearly 30 years.

Today's celebrities in their mid-50s can barely stay married to the 'love of her life' for a year. JLo is Exhibit A.

by Anonymousreply 23April 17, 2025 12:02 PM

If I were her, I would make him walk around the house in tighty-whities like he did in The Amityville Horror.

by Anonymousreply 24April 17, 2025 12:50 PM

Josh Brolin has talked about his mother, who was married to James Brolin for 20 years. She was his first wife, sounded like a horror, I am sure Brolin is the type to be dominated by a woman. Perfect for Barbra.

by Anonymousreply 25April 17, 2025 1:15 PM

The secret is a paper bag or always insisting on doggy style.

by Anonymousreply 26April 17, 2025 6:54 PM

Do you think Barbra gets her butthole waxed?

by Anonymousreply 27April 17, 2025 7:09 PM

^^^Definitely dyed to match the bedroom color scheme

by Anonymousreply 28April 17, 2025 7:29 PM

Could it be opposites attracting? James looks to be very laid-back. Barbra is... hmm, the opposite of laid-back!

by Anonymousreply 29April 18, 2025 11:36 AM

R29 I think since meeting Brolin, Streisand has become very laid back. She made only two movies since 1996, hasn't produced or directed anything, and only focused on movies which were in 'driving range' of her LA home, so she didn't have to travel 'on location'. She spent most of the past thirty years redecorating / remodeling her home (which she said time and time again this relaxes and renews her), and recording music at her home studio.

She's certainly not living the hyper lifestyle focused on her careers as she did prior to 1995.

by Anonymousreply 30April 18, 2025 11:46 AM

I imagine the secret to a happy marriage with her is making sure you never give her a moment's problem on anything. When she says jump, you say "how high", on the way up.

by Anonymousreply 31April 18, 2025 12:05 PM

R31 Most long-lasting, successful marriages follow that formula. It's been pretty much proven to be a solid way of keeping a marriage together (it's called compromise - I'm sure the wife gives in to the hubby at times).

It's when both partners are not willing to compromise that the marriage dissolves within a year or so (Affleck and JLo) and they blame ("we grew into separate directions" as their excuse, which means: we couldn't compromise on the simplest things.

by Anonymousreply 32April 18, 2025 12:13 PM

1) I give him credit for lasting longer than anybody ever expected.

2) Never let your eyebrows go white. Especially when they're your best feature.

by Anonymousreply 33April 18, 2025 12:32 PM

[quote]When she says jump, you say "how high", on the way up.

When she says jump, you just start jumping. She'll let you know if it's not high enough.

by Anonymousreply 34April 18, 2025 12:36 PM

He mentioned in an interview, I can't remember if Barbra was there, about basically having a couples therapist who makes house calls on speed dial. I'm sure it always somehow ends with, "Jim, Barbra is right on this one."

by Anonymousreply 35April 19, 2025 7:04 PM

R35 I know a lot of couples -and I mean a lot - who seem to have happy marriages, and they all say part of the success of their marriage is 'couples therapy' about once a month. It helps puts things in perspective for them ,especially with kids involved and even blended families.

I also remember years ago when he was a guest on 'The View', Brolin said he and Barbra never miss an episode of the show. Whoopi and Joy told him there's an open invitation to Barbra - whenever she wants to come on the show, they'll make it happen. He said she wouldn't enjoy that as much, she loves being a longtime loyal viewer.

by Anonymousreply 36April 19, 2025 7:50 PM

I believe he said the couples' therapist advised him to spend even more time on the golf course.

by Anonymousreply 37April 19, 2025 8:57 PM

Jim was also encouraged to take time outs in his car parked in the mall parking lot.

by Anonymousreply 38April 19, 2025 9:19 PM

I wanted to add that OPs' pic is one of a handful where Barbra looks better than Jim.

I think it's his hair. And again, eyebrows. They define the whole face.

by Anonymousreply 39April 19, 2025 9:23 PM

He strikes me as a very patient guy...so I guess he's able to put up with all her ramblings, complaints and bullshit

by Anonymousreply 40April 19, 2025 9:54 PM

I think Rozzie works the mall's adult novelty store "Meet the Fuckers" on Thursdays from 9pm to 2am. That where he gets inspiration before seeing his lovely bride.

by Anonymousreply 41April 19, 2025 10:08 PM

R39 That's a rather old picture of the two of them. They both look much older now in recent pictures.

by Anonymousreply 42April 19, 2025 11:36 PM

Don't focus on the nose.

by Anonymousreply 43April 19, 2025 11:37 PM

He’s definitely the kind of guy who’s comfortable with an alpha female. Props to him. Not every man can. I think all his wives have been dominant.

by Anonymousreply 44April 19, 2025 11:42 PM

Not sure if the motel story made it into Barbra’s book, but I’ve always found that story sweet and adorable (if hard to believe).

by Anonymousreply 45April 20, 2025 1:01 AM

Why am I not surprised that Barbra never misses an episode of The Spew? I'm sure she gets on the phone the second it is over and tells Jason all about it.

R45, what motel story?

by Anonymousreply 46April 20, 2025 1:33 AM

I'm sure it helpes that they have an enormous house. If they had to live in a small house or a condo like a lot of elderly couples, they'd be at each other's throats.

by Anonymousreply 47April 20, 2025 2:09 AM

R22 Please. Barbra is as Hollywood as they come.

People really buy this shit?

by Anonymousreply 48April 20, 2025 2:17 AM

Barbra cannot get financing for a movie these days, she said so herself. That's why she hasn't made any since 1996. That and the fact that producers probably don't want to have to deal with her, and current film actors have no interest in appearing in a Barbra movie.

by Anonymousreply 49April 20, 2025 2:28 AM

Celibacy?

by Anonymousreply 50April 20, 2025 2:39 AM

R46,

Barbra had no idea what a motel was until she met Brolin. She seemed amazed that one could drive right up to the room’s door. She said something about how she hated having to walk through a hotel and take an elevator, etc when one could just get out of the car and enter a room at a motel.

by Anonymousreply 51April 20, 2025 8:34 PM

^ I’m sure I believe that

R49, Barbra will be 83 YEARS OLD in a few days. I doubt she'd be able to get financing for anything now or within the last ten years. Yes, age matters.

by Anonymousreply 52April 20, 2025 9:09 PM

People in her peer group are still making movies and working.

I hope she can get Gypsy financed and finally play her. We can't leave her cinematic output finished on The Guilt Trip.

by Anonymousreply 53April 20, 2025 9:17 PM

R53 People in her age group are mostly playing secondary roles and I doubt she'd be a good fit for that. Although I suppose they could change the character of Rose's father to a mother for her.

by Anonymousreply 54April 20, 2025 9:22 PM

R12 - Tempur-pedic? They probably have top of the line Hasten bed.

The pricing can vary - but it's eye-watering. This number comes in at...drumroll... $318,000.00.

Yes - for just $317,990, you TOO can have a great night's sleep!

I've heard other Hasten's can actually go for more money than this - so you're getting a bargain!

by Anonymousreply 55April 20, 2025 9:28 PM

R55 I’m sure they just schlepped one of the Hastens upstairs from the bed store in the underground mall. They carry only Hastens—it keeps the riff-raff out of the mall.

by Anonymousreply 56April 22, 2025 5:55 AM

[quote]it keeps the riff-raff out of the mall.

Unfortunatly not.

Gayle King: "When I think of Tiffany lamps, I think of bright color."

Barbra Streisand: "You're thinking of fake Tiffany lamps."

R58 You'd better if you know what's good for you.

by Anonymousreply 60April 22, 2025 5:11 PM

Rotting in the fart sack till 2pm. I'll never look at them the same way again.

by Anonymousreply 62April 22, 2025 6:36 PM

Stockholm Syndrome.

by Anonymousreply 63April 22, 2025 10:34 PM

R51 She was born in the 1942, and she never heard of a motel until 1996? Is she an idiot?

by Anonymousreply 64April 25, 2025 10:06 PM

*In 1942

by Anonymousreply 65April 25, 2025 10:08 PM

She went to summer camp in the Catskills, she's known damn well about motels. Even if you didn't stay in one, you saw them all over the place in the 1950s. I went to the Catskills as a kid every summer in the late 60s and there were still many there.

by Anonymousreply 66April 25, 2025 10:17 PM

So, who makes dinner at their house? Do they have a cook, or what?

by Anonymousreply 67April 25, 2025 10:21 PM

We learned from Yentl that Barbra is a bad cook. She burns the biscuits.

by Anonymousreply 68April 25, 2025 10:24 PM

The thought of Barbra Streisand turning 83 yesterday just doesn't sit well with me.

It felt like she went from 50 to 80 in 10 years.

I know everyone ages - but this feels personal.

by Anonymousreply 69April 25, 2025 10:26 PM

Yes, R67, Renata. I don't know if she retired. I really know too much about Barbra. Barbra has many servants, I have no doubt, and always had. A friend of mine did freelance work with her through the 80s and early 90s. She said back then there was a circle of people around BSJ that you had to deal with and they weren't very pleasant. They're probably all dead now.

by Anonymousreply 70April 25, 2025 10:26 PM

^^^Barbra was wonderful to my friend, actually. Barbra was afraid to go outside, this was at her CPW apartment. After she and my friend had done their work, they would sometimes go for a walk in the park. She was never recognized, or at least no one made it known that they knew who she was.

by Anonymousreply 71April 25, 2025 10:30 PM

R67, I say she orders and Renate picks up the grub.

Mostly she has a private chef who cooks up all the shit Babs wants. German Renate is only capable of heating things up. Barbra, as she likes to point out, is such an imbecile that she “burns water.” Translation, she doesn’t understand that wanted to evaporates. How cute.

by Anonymousreply 72April 25, 2025 11:36 PM

Has he tried separate bathrooms?

by Anonymousreply 73April 25, 2025 11:38 PM

Yes, in SEPARATE WINGS.

by Anonymousreply 74April 25, 2025 11:39 PM

Rumor is that to keep things fresh with their marriage James pulls the surprise anal on Barbra on the regular...

by Anonymousreply 75April 26, 2025 12:16 AM

There were crazy tabloid stories back in the 70's that Barbra would get sexually aroused by farting, and that she had birds flying around her house shitting everywhere.

She talked about in the liner notes to the Superman album and it inspired the song "Don't Believe What you read".

by Anonymousreply 76April 26, 2025 12:21 AM

We don’t need to know. TMI

by Anonymousreply 77April 26, 2025 1:42 AM

Renate makes sure Jim has a big bowl of cabbage every night!

by Anonymousreply 78April 26, 2025 2:34 AM

R77 Maybe you don't, dearie, so speak for yourself.

by Anonymousreply 79April 26, 2025 2:46 AM

There are some stars who are interesting people, and they'd be interesting to listen to even if they had no acting/singing talent. They're great raconteurs, or they're charming. Streisand wouldn't be interesting if she couldn't sing. She's one of the dullest celebrites. Brolin seems dull, too. Probably that's the secret.

by Anonymousreply 80April 26, 2025 9:08 AM

Is this a case of dull vs. circumspect and discreet? Does she release a 2.0 version upon her death with all the gossip she knows her fans want?

by Anonymousreply 81April 26, 2025 9:35 AM

[quote] James Brolin Reveals the Secret to Marriage with Barbra Streisand:

A tremendous buttplug!

by Anonymousreply 82April 26, 2025 9:37 AM

[quote] Is this a case of dull vs. circumspect and discreet? Does she release a 2.0 version upon her death with all the gossip she knows her fans want?

R81 I think you're re-interpreting what I said. Her being dull, to me, has nothing to do with her being discreet, or not revealing gossip. I just think when you see her in interviews, or in any other context besides performing, she's on the dull side. Naturally, if you're a big fan, you probably wouldn't notice (but I'm just sort of neutral about her). If you see certain other stars in interviews, they're just interesting personalities, they sparkle, they're entertaining talkers, or they have charm, or magnetism. Streisand seems more like an average person from the neighborhood. She seems nice, she's not offensive or unlikeable, but she's not fascinating, either. At least as I see it.

by Anonymousreply 83April 26, 2025 9:49 AM

Maybe I mean she doesn't have that "larger than life" quality. It seems to come alive when she's performing, though.
