ANOTHER fatal plane crash: 6 dead including family of doctors, former NCAA athlete of the year

Another family wiped out in a New York crash, this one involving a small plane that went down in an upstate field.

WTF?

[quote]Among the victims were Karenna Groff, a former MIT soccer player named the 2022 NCAA woman of the year; her father, a neuroscientist, Dr. Michael Groff; her mother, Dr. Joy Saini, a urogynecologist; her brother, Jared Groff, a 2022 graduate of Swarthmore College who worked as a paralegal; Alexia Couyutas Duarte, Jared Groff’s partner who also graduated Swarthmore and planned to attend Harvard Law School this fall; and Karenna Groff’s boyfriend, James Santoro, another recent MIT graduate, according to a family statement Sunday.

Two hot bros — basketball and lacrosse — killed in their prime.

A lax bro from MIT, no less.

Why, God, why?

by Anonymousreply 3April 14, 2025 3:45 AM

Isn't this all because of that moron Trump's government redundancy cuts? Weren't a lot of FAA officials fired? That idiot's tiny little orange hands will be forever stained red with blood like Lady Macbeth's.

by Anonymousreply 4April 14, 2025 3:51 AM

Planes are falling from the skies left and right. Maybe Air Force One will be next.

by Anonymousreply 5April 14, 2025 3:54 AM

WTF!! This is insane.

by Anonymousreply 6April 14, 2025 4:11 AM

Why do you have to take such hot snatch!

by Anonymousreply 7April 14, 2025 4:13 AM

Dr. Groff was reported to be an experienced pilot, but I’m curious how much time he had in this particular aircraft. The MU-2 is notorious for being an unstable, challenging aircraft to fly.

by Anonymousreply 8April 14, 2025 4:13 AM

The Catskills is not that far from Westchester. They could have been there in two hours by car. These small planes are too dangerous.

by Anonymousreply 9April 14, 2025 4:17 AM

Who loads their entire family and fiancés into a small plane?

For a flight from White Plains to Hudson?

That's a (very pleasant) two-hour drive.

by Anonymousreply 10April 14, 2025 4:20 AM

I've flown from NYC to Toronto and Rochester, but that's knocking down an eight-hour drive and five-hour drive, respectively, to 90 minutes or an hour in the air.

Flying from Westchester to immediately Westchester-adjacent makes no sense.

by Anonymousreply 11April 14, 2025 4:28 AM

Completely agree r11. If they just took a few cars and had some good conversation, they'd be alive right now.

by Anonymousreply 12April 14, 2025 4:33 AM

And they could pack snacks!

by Anonymousreply 13April 14, 2025 4:54 AM

The boys were yummy.

by Anonymousreply 14April 14, 2025 5:13 AM

Less than 2 hours.. per google, 1:39. Driving surely would take less time than it took to fly, if you include driving to airport, flight paperwork on both ends, etc...

by Anonymousreply 15April 14, 2025 11:51 AM

Whelp—there’s a very happy person on the waitlist of HLS. They got in!

by Anonymousreply 16April 14, 2025 12:00 PM

Jared Goff?! Oh my…never mind.

by Anonymousreply 17April 14, 2025 12:02 PM

R10, are you sure about that?!

by Anonymousreply 18April 14, 2025 12:05 PM

R8 from Wikipedia:

[quote] In the United States, the MU-2 had a spotty safety record during its early decades, as its high performance coupled with a relatively low purchase price appealed to amateur pilots who did not appreciate how demanding it is to fly compared to slower piston engined aircraft.[18] The MU-2 has performance similar to a small jet; however, as it weighs less than 12,500 pounds (5,700 kg), under U.S. pilot certification rules in force at the time, a pilot holding a multi-engine rating for much slower light twin piston-engine aircraft was allowed to fly the MU-2 with only a simple flight instructor endorsement. Inexperience with the MU-2's higher speeds, altitudes, and climb and descent rates resulted in many crashes. In Europe, pilots were required to obtain a specific type rating to fly the MU-2, resulting in roughly half the accident rate of early operations in the U.S.[4]

I am wondering if they maybe had plans to use the plane for a longer flight once they were in the Catskills, which is why he wanted to bring it along. Or maybe he wanted to do some work on it while there?

by Anonymousreply 20April 14, 2025 7:14 PM

Small planes have a pretty awful safety record. They’re not crashing at a higher than usual rate. The media is just reporting on them more.

by Anonymousreply 21April 14, 2025 7:21 PM

How many times are the pilots said to be experienced and then boom, right down the drain! It's almost always pilot error even the big planes, but these small ones are definitely killers. Think about it, how many small planes crash into houses, roads etc, it could be anybody's house too, no one is really safe.

by Anonymousreply 22April 14, 2025 7:33 PM

Was it a DEI pilot?

by Anonymousreply 23April 14, 2025 7:45 PM

Was it a rescue pilot?

by Anonymousreply 24April 14, 2025 10:16 PM

[quote] Was it a rescue pilot?

Apparently not.

by Anonymousreply 25April 14, 2025 10:17 PM

what is that plane allowed in the air if all it does is crash.

by Anonymousreply 26April 14, 2025 10:22 PM

All these plane crashes that have happened this year so far. Are any of the victims in any way related to anyone who has wronged or attempted to prosecute Trump in the last 4 years or so?

by Anonymousreply 27April 15, 2025 4:43 AM

I’m so excited! Thanks to the new and continuing series of Trump caused plane crashes Canadian produced “Mayday Air Disaster” is back in production with a proposed spin-off furthering air-crash investigations! Finally something to look forward to!

by Anonymousreply 28June 1, 2025 1:42 AM

Thats not funny.

by Anonymousreply 29June 1, 2025 1:44 AM

Are small plane crashes more frequent than in the past? I am skeptical. This seems more like a "trend" that people are trying to create.

by Anonymousreply 30June 1, 2025 1:47 AM

This sounds wholly like pilot error, not having anything to do with the other air traffic bullshit going on right now.

by Anonymousreply 31June 1, 2025 1:47 AM

Ahem.

What do you think NTSB is going to say - it's been confiscated by Trump & friends.

by Anonymousreply 33June 1, 2025 1:56 AM

I do like that Air Disaster program. It’s very informative and they've replaced the actual air traffic controllers and flight crew with very attractive actors so you couldn’t ask for anything better.
