'Kiss of the Spider Woman' Movie Musical Sets October Release Date
It's the screen version of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, starring Jennifer Lopez. The forthcoming movie musical version of Kander and Ebb's 1993 Broadway musical Kiss of the Spider Woman will hit movie theatres October 10, according to a report in Deadline.
The screen version of John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Terrence McNally's 1992 musical features film star and recording artist Jennifer Lopez starring in the title role, with Tonatiuh as Luis Molina and Diego Luna as Valentin Arregui. The cast also includes Broadway alum Josefina Scaglione (West Side Story), Bruno Bichir, and Aline Mayagoitia. The film, a presentation of Artists Equity and Mohari Media, ran 128 minutes as of the Sundance premiere.

The novel was adapted by Puig into a 1983 stage play, and then into an Academy Award-winning film in 1985 starring Broadway favorite Raúl Juliá. Kander, Ebb, and McNally's stage musical version expanded the story somewhat, making Aurora a character who appears in a number of fantasy sequences. Chita Rivera created the role and won a Tony Award for her performance, later succeeded by Vanessa Williams in her Broadway debut.

I'll give it a go. The actors playing Molina and Valentin look interesting.

JLo coming for that Oscar, bitches! It’ll be interesting to see if she really goes all the way.

Doesn't she have beef with the girl from The Bear who may be nominated in the same category?

If the Acadamy gives Lopez, a fuckin’ terrible actress (not to mention insufferable mega-narcissist) an Oscar, I’ll take that as a sign that the world really and truly has gone to shit.

If she doesn't get an Oscar nomination you know it's ONLY because she's Puerto Rican and there's still a lot of racism in Hollywood.

It's an honor to even be nominated.

She admitted she cried in bed when she was snubbed for Hustlers. Another diss might end her mentally. She want so bad to be an Oscar nominee.

She really did deserve a nomination for that Stripper movie. I’m hoping this is the charm

I think the Academy needs to look into some of these Diddy charges, depositions and court testimonies before making any rash decisions.

Her Movieline interview still lives in infamy and any Academy members even remotely connected to the many people she trashed wouldn’t even consider nominating this Cluster B bitch.
She’s also spending the summer touring shady countries in the Middle East because no one in the U.S. will pay to see her, not even for $8.
No Oscar. No music. No man.
It’s over JLo.

Never. She’s too despised. And she has no talent.
Plus, those nasty P. Diddy accusations.
Not even Ben can save her. Not that he would even want you to.
She’s truly old and alone now.

R29 I don’t know but there is absolutely no interest in Latino lead musicals and I don’t know why Hollywood keeps pushing them. “In the Heights”, “West Side Story”, and “Emilia Perez” were all box office bombs despite their critical acclaim.
This won’t be any different.

R18 “Hustlers” was hyped up too much. After the stripper pole dance, there wasn’t much to her character and the movie wasn’t very good.

Unless it's a VERY weak year...it's unlikely.
And, I don't think Wicked II: Electric Boogaloo is gonna get many nominations either.

What will JLo do if this flops? She never properly transitioned from her 35-year-old bride movies to mother roles or career-woman roles. She’s pushing 60 and should be playing abuelas at this point.
She can’t act. The sham that was her musical career is in the toilet. Ben is gone and no man other than a gold digger would want her.
That story will be far better than “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”

She really is an abuela. Every pic Ive seen of her lately she looks firmly in the grandma territory, not in a bad way but she dresses too youthful
There is a YouTube short of her in the Hamptons in a store and she's wearing bike shorts and crop top. Her ass is so saggy I cringed.
Why can't she age like her mother? Her mom looks good but age appropriate.

She really is our Raquel Welch...mostly famous for being gorgeous and having a hot bod.
But, Raquel was smart and transitioned into a business woman who kept her toe in the acting world with occassional TV appearances and cameos.
JLo insists she is always gonna be a top music/film star.

[quote] She really is our Raquel Welch.
Bingo. That’s exactly who she is.
Raquel was despised by people who worked with her as well but cleaned up her act. JLo is still loathed by all and will never let go of her delusions of grandeur.
She’s hopeless and will live the rest of her life an unloved and untalented pariah.

This won’t flop—the preview reviews are spectacular. That said, I doubt it’ll be a popular hit either—likely just the theatre crowd

JLO had a monster hit on Netflix in 2023 with straight to video Mother. One of their most streamed flix.. So she still has a big audience but not in arenas or movie theatres.

I think the title KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN will confuse many people, making them think it's related to the Spider-Verse.
Just like THE IRON LADY did over a decade ago, when fans thought it was related to the IRON MAN franchise and were disappointed.

I thought Selma Hayek had this role? I'd much rather see Selma than JLo.
JLo probably turned down her fee to get this job.
As far as the two male leads - WHO? I'm sure they're fine - but the only name is JLo - which makes me think this was done on a shoestring budget.

Selma sing? Her speaking voice is cringe. I can't imagine what she sounds like singing. Then there's the stumpy short body with the balloon tits. I'm sure that would be the best casting choice
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 26, 2025 6:14 PM

R47 - you're so right, JLO's voice is incomparable, so she was the obvious choice.
Selma can sing. But not sure about the dancing - JLo's not tall and doesn't have the legs like Chita, but she can dance.
There has to be some 3rd option - and if anyone says Shakira, I'll cut a bitch.

R45, I still have no idea why Kiss of the Spider Woman would premiere at Sundance. You go to Sundance with a movie like CODA or Little Miss Sunshine or Whiplash. Those are the movies that play to that crowd.
An adaptation of a Broadway musical just doesn't fit the Sundance vibe.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 26, 2025 6:44 PM

R49 - JLo was in a movie with Robert Redford years ago. I think it was all JLo's PR team because she also 'performed' a couple of songs at another event at Sundance prior to the film showing.
This is JLo going for that Oscar - you can smell it a mile away.

Do we really think there will be two actresses in musicals nominated in the same category. There's no way Ariana isn't getting nominated so what do we think?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 27, 2025 4:27 AM

No, I don’t think there’s a precedent for two actresses in different musicals to compete against one another. Especially if those two actresses are Ariana Grande and an actress of Puerto Rican descent.
Absolutely inconceivable.

The movie was modestly well received at Sundance but her performance was pretty much lauded across the board. I'm still not sure she can be nominated because she isn't very well liked in the inner circle of Hollywood. We already saw what should have been a cinch nomination for a big star go to that linebacker girl playing a 12 year old in Little Women so I'm not sure it's given. There was absolutely no reason for her to have been snubbed at her level for Hustlers unless people just don't like her.

Ariana Grande is apparently going to be in the lead category next year because in the second film Glinda is more prominent than Elphaba. JLo will be in the supporting category so they won’t end up competing against each other.
