The Chilean is such an enigma.
It's unusual that they made his character Chilean given his not-so-great Spanish.

Hard to imagine him ever turning loose.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 11, 2025 1:13 AM |
I assumed he was a bottom.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 11, 2025 1:20 AM |
I assumed he was oral only!!!! Gus was so OCD, I think his aversion to anything messy would prevent him from getting too rowdy on the sack, sadly, because he’s a gorgeous man.

I don't speak Spanish but I live in a area with a large Lation population, I hear it every day, and even I could tell his Spanish was awful.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 11, 2025 2:39 AM |
he was a sexless frump
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 11, 2025 2:43 AM |
R5 he’s been speaking Spanish all his life. How could it be awful?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 11, 2025 4:53 AM |
It seems like his accent became more pronounced once the show identified him as Chilean. I didn't detect any accent during his early BB episodes, he just sounded overly-formal and stilted. He really leaned into the accent during BCS. I always found his character interesting and was able to overlook the bad accent and labored Spanish.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 11, 2025 6:44 AM |
They wanted to portray him as someone who had an accent that he dropped by the time he got in his Breaking Bad era.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 11, 2025 10:41 AM |
That's fun theory but the shows only take place six years apart. Plus Gus doesn't seem like the type who would play down his foreign origin.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 11, 2025 10:54 AM |
Gus seems exactly like the type to play down his foreign origin.

He creeped me out
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 11, 2025 3:04 PM |
His death on that show. Goddamn.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 11, 2025 3:34 PM |
Bottom for sure. But a shameful bottom.
To fight this shame, he'll sometimes try to top after a few drinks. This will lead to hilarious results and the bottom shame cycle will only intensify.
Innocents will die as a result.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 11, 2025 3:40 PM |
R7, he speaks Italian.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 11, 2025 3:44 PM |
How do you know, R15?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 11, 2025 4:51 PM |
If Gus was a bottom, as many are saying, then wouldn’t there be some underlying attraction to Lalo Salamanca? I don’t see how a bottom could resist Lalo. Yet Gus despised him.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 11, 2025 4:55 PM |
Lalo is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo hot.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 11, 2025 6:42 PM |
Plot Pitch: A new season built around the construction of Gustavo Fring's home sex dungeon. It'll make the underground Meth Lab look like your grandmother's carport.

Gus had full control over his sexual impulses.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 11, 2025 11:01 PM |
He was a red-blooded heterosexual male
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 11, 2025 11:03 PM |
He was born in Denmark to an African American mother and an Italian father. He speaks English (of course) and Italian.
He knows Spanish but is not a native speaker and labors a bit at it.

The actor was in the original cast of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 11, 2025 11:44 PM |
R17, because Lalo would never fuck Gus. Duh.
When a bottom like Gus is rejected by a top of Lalo's caliber? They either continue to secretly pine away or they start to hate what they can't have.

Gusto never fucked anyone after his chicken brother partner (name forgotten). He just focused on working for the cartel like a good little supplier until he could exact revenge.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 12, 2025 5:20 AM |
I never understood why Vince Gilligan made Gus’ sexuality so vague on the show. Reminded me of how Hollywood screenwriters and directors depicted gays during the Hays Code.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 12, 2025 5:34 AM |
Gustavo made a couple appearances on NYPD Blue before he became Gus. So did Jesse, Skylar and Tuco.

No way he went that long without taking a lover, R25.

Oh yeah like how Gus had a boyfriend and he was openly stated to be his boyfriend in the script? That’s classic Hays Code, amirite?

Gus would never get involved with employees. He was too professional.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 12, 2025 8:21 PM |
It's probably just as well that that his accent was bad. Chilean Spanish is really difficult on the ears. I speak Castillian Spanish. I'm fine with Mexican and Central/South American accents, but not the Chilean one. It's been decades since I've heard it, so I can't remember well enough to describe, but it was hard to understand.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 12, 2025 9:04 PM |
Did they ever explain his character's ethnic background? "Fring" is probably some Germanic language surname. Of course both Chile and Argentina have large populations that descend from European immigrants, but they're mostly from Spain or Italy, I believe.

His business partner was never "openly stated" as his boyfriend on the show. If the script characterized it that way, then that proves my point. What appeared on screen was downplayed and made ambiguous.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 12, 2025 10:33 PM |
I’m basing that off Breaking Bad, btw. I never watched Better Call Saul. If it was revealed on BCS that his business partner was also his lover, then my mistake.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 12, 2025 10:43 PM |
How the fuck didn’t you watch BCS, R36?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 12, 2025 11:50 PM |
R37: After Breaking Bad ended, I was sort of done with those characters and had no interest in revisiting them in a prequel series. But I'm tempted to watch it, considering all the high praise it has received from the fans.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 13, 2025 5:26 AM |
I could never be done with the Breaking Bad universe. I’m upset there’s no plans to continue it. Why not? Even if it was mediocre, it would be better than 95% of the crap that comes out.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 13, 2025 2:02 PM |
R38 I was like that too. I thought BB was TV perfection and wanted nothing to do with Saul.
A couple years ago I caved and started watching it when it came to Netflix. It's so damn good. I definitely recommend it. Not quite as good as BB, but very very close.

I hope you're all watching "The Residence" on Netflix. This conversation fits equally with Giancarlo's character A.B. Wynter
