Oral Minoxidil - who has tried?

It seems like my hair is thinning, and I spoke with my dermatologist about options—one of which is oral minoxidil.

Has anyone tried it? I'm concerned about the side effects (weight gain, fast heartbeat, and chest pain). I've also heard that it affects your libido (sex drive).

Any reason not to use topical minoxidil? I use it and have no side effects.

I used topical Minoxidil for years and found it to be a bother. I switched to the oral version and appreciate how easy it is just to pop a pill. I have experienced zero side effects with it. Is my hair thick and luxurious? Not really. I think the most I can expect of Minoxidil is to slow the sad progression of hereditary hair loss.

I use the topical. Hair started falling out during Covid. Came back quickly to what it use to be.

I use the topical and have been for at least 2 years. I don’t think it’s really working though as I’m continuing to slowly lose my hair. I think if I was younger (I’m 60) I’d have better results. I also use Finasteride and the results are pretty much the same.

I’ve used topical for a while with good results. I’d rather not take something orally which could have side effects somewhere else

OH here. I was interested in oral as my hair is super thin and fine - I thought it would end up being unmanageable.

R1, are you using topical or oral?

R2/R3 thanks.

R4, just turned 63.

R5, that is also something to consider

I just wanted to put it out there and see what others have experienced

For those who use topical, do you think it can work on fine hair?

by Anonymousreply 6April 10, 2025 9:51 PM

R6, I use topical. I personally don't find it a bother, and in my opinion taking a pill would only be a couple seconds faster. I also use this shampoo called Activ as well as Nizoral shampoo. It's hard to tease out the contributions of each, but I honestly think they all make a difference.

It worked great on my scalp, for sure, but it can sometimes be quite tedious having to comb the hair all over your body.

I use the topical foam - the drops get all over the place and makes your hair oily/flat. The foam is super easy and also works as a sort of mousse to fluff your hair and keep it in place.

Go on any of the oral minoxidil threads on Reddit or other places. Tons of complaints - often from young men, even in their 20s - irregular or fast heartbeat, headaches, chest pain.

I would not take it orally.

I've been using oral finasteride + oral minoxidil for about 8 months now . I can honestly say I'm growing back some hair. What surprised me the most is it's working even my receding hairline.

Ironically, OP does Meth daily.

by Anonymousreply 11April 10, 2025 10:30 PM

Don’t use it if you have cats. It’s poison to them

by Anonymousreply 12April 10, 2025 10:35 PM

No cats. Thanks everyone. I guess it won't hurt to try the topical; however, the concern with my hair being so fine and if I can do anything presentable with the solution.

by Anonymousreply 13April 10, 2025 10:51 PM

OP invest in clippers and stay thin and shagging.

I've been on oral finasteride for over 30 years. I had some thinning in the front but held on fully to the crown. I decided to start taking oral minoxidil 2.5mg just over 5 months ago. I now don't have to worry about getting the part in my hair just right as I have regained the hair in the front. Overall my hair is now MUCH thicker. I've gone back to using a hair dryer as it takes too long to dry otherwise. I'm nearly 65. No side effects from either med (sexual or otherwise).

Interesting thread; I may give oral minoxidil a try. Used the spray decades ago but it was a pain in the ass. I've been on finasteride for about a decade. I'm in my 70s so I expect thinning but I'm not ready for cueball status.

A pill to grow hair would seem likely to tickle a lot of other genes in unexpected ways.

by Anonymousreply 17August 16, 2025 12:22 AM

Wear a fucking hat, it's safer.

by Anonymousreply 18August 16, 2025 12:32 AM

I would be afraid it would make my tongue hairy.

R19 Not from minoxidil or finasteride. Unfortunately, the effects of both of these medications does require continued use. Finasteride may decrease body hair while minoxidil may increase body hair. In my case, I'm not a hairy person and still am not. I have noticed increase in eyebrow thickness and fingernail growth from the minoxidil.
