“Sinners” debuts on Rotten Tomatoes with 100%

WB did not know how to market this (awful title) but this might become the film that establishes MBJ as the new Denzel

Hell yeah. Are Ryan Coogler and Jordan the new Scorsese and Deniro?

by Anonymousreply 1April 10, 2025 5:57 PM

I ask this with genuine curiosity but do black films (other than the execrable Tyler Perry ) really ever do that well ?

by Anonymousreply 2April 10, 2025 7:17 PM

R2 You must be slow. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 3April 10, 2025 7:23 PM

This is not even a black film perse it’s has more blacks in the cast than whites and a black director. This man successfully rebooted the Rocky series with Creed making him a household name as well as Black Panther. His Amazon flicks were also highly successful and he received critical acclaim for Fruitvale Station. Another underrated gem by him is Just Mercy co-starring Jamie Foxx about a man on death row.

by Anonymousreply 4April 10, 2025 7:26 PM

Black actors. You think the woke reviewers are going to dare trash it!? Puh-leeze. It might be a good film too, but these reviewers are either bleeding hearts or trying to get on the studio’s good side so that they’re invited to more screenings. No one has any balls anymore. They’re so afraid to trash a film unless the actor is pro-Israel or some shit. A film having a 100% on RT is beyond suspicious.

by Anonymousreply 5April 10, 2025 7:30 PM

R2 no,just dont watch many movies or tv shows anymore . I simply dont keep up. Loved your answer though . So pithy .

by Anonymousreply 7April 10, 2025 7:56 PM

R5 If that’s the case wouldn’t every Tyler Perry film at least have good reviews. Wouldn’t Bay Boys 4 have received stellar reviews. Make the racism make sense. Make it make sense Jesus.

by Anonymousreply 8April 10, 2025 8:46 PM

I just saw it. It is really phenomenal. Try to see it before they spoil you the big scene. Go, go, go. And stay after the credits; there's a long epilogue.

by Anonymousreply 9April 17, 2025 11:47 PM

I want to see it but can't find a good IMAX seat here in NYC. I may have to choose some weeknight after work.

by Anonymousreply 10April 18, 2025 12:18 AM

All the NYC IMAX screen showings are pretty much sold out for the weekend

by Anonymousreply 11April 18, 2025 12:48 AM

I’m interested in seeing this but am worried it’s too much of an action film which I’m really not a fan of.

by Anonymousreply 12April 18, 2025 1:06 AM

Michael B Jordan is so fucking hot. Total sex symbol.

With vampires? Best Picture? Hmmmm. i would love to see that. Horror is the red headed stepchild of award shows. I guess the Substance really helped.

by Anonymousreply 15April 18, 2025 3:51 PM

I’m with R12. Very curious, will see it this weekend. But I too have no use for action films. Horror, I’m all in.

Also want to check out “The Ugly Stepsister”.

by Anonymousreply 16April 18, 2025 4:48 PM

I hate horror films and I do not remember the last time I went to see one at the theatre. But, Sinners is much more than a horror flick. It is a beautiful, layered, southern horror gothic tale that it is gorgeously filmed. And go before you learn about "that" scene. Truly unforgettable.

by Anonymousreply 17April 18, 2025 4:51 PM

I am so tired of vampires and zombies. But if it’s good, I’ll see it.

by Anonymousreply 18April 18, 2025 5:18 PM

I’m not a horror movie buff. AT ALL! I think GET OUT was the last horror film I saw in the movies. I’m afraid this one will end with a gory bloodbath which is not my thing and enough of a reason for me to avoid it.

Said to cost $90 million (supposedly more like $110 million, Coogler had to give some of his fee back in return for money off the back end and the rights to this project reverting to him in 25 years.) The film is projected to open at between 40 and 50 million, not really enough of a start to earn the $300 million worldwide it will need to break even. An added complication is that interest is soft in most international markets, which is typical of movies starring black actors.

Of course all this received wisdom will mean little if the movie becomes a phenomenon, a word-of-mouth hit. But it kind of needs to be that to succeed.

by Anonymousreply 19April 18, 2025 6:06 PM

Ryan Coogler's movies are better than Jordan Peele's movies.

by Anonymousreply 20April 18, 2025 6:10 PM

"Sinners" Is Fun as Hell, But It Tells Some Hard Truths Ryan Coogler's latest film is an urgent rumination on race, past misdeeds, and unhealed wounds that still devour our body politic.

I just saw "Sinners" this evening.

Preposterously entertaining, riveting, too much and not enough, gorgeously shot, characters you'll care about and invest in, and yes, there are themes here that I'll need two viewings to really take them all in so I can think about them.

SLIGHT SPOILER: Among the superb renderings of Black American blues and folk, there is an Irish folk song and dance performed by BOTH the black and White Vampires that Blew. My. Mind.

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2025 3:31 AM

Mild knock - I think the editing could have been slightly tighter by about 5 to 10 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2025 3:33 AM

Really good, although the audio (at least in my theater) was a bit muffled at some times. The plot is gripping and the incredible music gets into your soul, grinds right into your bones. I have minor issues with the plot & camerawork during the primary action scene, but the non-action scenes are superb and keep you locked in. MBJ is a beautiful man and gives a full spectrum performance, plus Hailee Steinfeld's casting is perfection.

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2025 3:55 AM

Astounding: an A Cinemascore.

Horror movies NEVER get A Cinemascores. ChatGPT could only name two: The Sixth Sense and A Quiet Place.

This could potentially be both a box office and Oscar juggernaut.

While Michael B. Jordan starred in it it's directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.

I loved it and will definitely be seeing it again. Jordan is incredible in both roles and the ensemble is so strong. Would have loved more of Jack O'Connell's Remmick, but other than that it did not disappoint.

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2025 5:19 AM

Saw it this afternoon. Fantastic, and agree with the comments here.

I was worried it was going to be some stupid Black Panther like action movie. Not at all.

See it.

"a household name"??? [italic]Mary.[/italic]

I saw it tonight and it's terrific, even though (as someone said above) it's a little too long. It's very much it's own thing, but you can see the influence of dozens of films in it: from "Django Unchained" to "O Brother Where Art Thou" to "Get Out" to "Bonnie and Clyde" to (most of all) "From Dusk until Dawn," and several others besides. It's gorgeously shot and edited, and terrifically acted: there are a number of superb performances in this. The standout was actually the Nigerian-born British actress Wunmi Mosaku, but there are also fine performances from Michael B. Jordan (who I agree is too ripped, but is still terrific), Miles Catton, Delroy Lindo, Jayme Lawson (very memorable), and Li Jun Li. And the Irish actor Jack O'Connell was a great villain--I didn't even recognize him. It's also worth seeing just for the great score.

it will never make all its money back, but it's going to be a huge cult favorite, and I predict it will be hugely influential.

by Anonymousreply 28April 20, 2025 5:02 AM

I’ll have to check it out. It sounds like my action movie fears aren’t real

by Anonymousreply 29April 20, 2025 5:14 AM

The first half of it is an intelligent period film about a small town in Mississippi during the Jim Crow years; the second half is like an action/horror movie, but a very well made one.

by Anonymousreply 30April 20, 2025 5:21 AM

Each of us have our own reactions and I'm not here to knock anybody who doesn't share mine, but I've seen a few reviews outside of this thread that state that "Sinners" doesn't begin as a horror movie.

I'm puzzled by that reaction.

From the opening scene of Sammy clutching the broken guitar and his trauma about what's he he's just survived plus finding the snake in the back of the truck, even if I had zero prior knowledge of the movie and went in cold, it would have clear to me the sense of dread and horror are well established.

by Anonymousreply 31April 20, 2025 1:22 PM

I'll stick with "Black Orpheus".

by Anonymousreply 32April 20, 2025 1:30 PM

Wunmi Mosaku gives an incredible performance. However, at the beginning, I thought she read a little old for MBJ. I am a fan of the movie but their first love scene is awkward as hell.

[quote]Wunmi Mosaku gives an incredible performance. However, at the beginning, I thought she read a little old for MBJ.

I thought she was much older than MBJ, but they are actually the same age.

by Anonymousreply 34April 20, 2025 2:33 PM

From my review of the reviews, there are varying reactions to the meaning of Remmick's and the other vampire's Irish folk dance and song.

I thought Coogler's point in that scene was to recognize how Remmick himself wanted to reify his cultural Irish roots, too, and the reality that Coogler spends the time he did on that scene I think proves that.

Isn't that somewhat confirmed with Remmick's stated desire to use Sammy as his conduit to his own lost heritage?

One of the glories of Sinners is that I saw what I saw from a lot of allegorical perspectives.

Oh wow it ended up topping Minecraft

It's so intent on being an allegory and concentrating the action into 24 hours that the plot is full of holes. But it's still a good film.
