Michelle Williams was upset over ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Oscar loss: "I Mean, What Was ‘Crash’?"

Michelle Williams appeared on “Watch What Happens Live” to promote her new FX series “Dying for Sex.” During the interview, host Andy Cohen took a brief moment to call out one of her most acclaimed movies: Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain.” Williams earned an Oscar nomination for playing Alma, the wife of Heath Ledger’s damaged cowboy.

Cohen explained to Williams “what an important movie ‘Brokeback Mountain'” was to him and so many gay men at the time of its 2005 theatrical release, adding: “I think it’s still in my top two movies of all time. Did you realize at the time you were making that, what a profound impact it was going to have on people?”

“Yes, because people were so open about it,” Williams answered. “I remember doing the junket, you don’t get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry, and that was the moment I think that we all knew it was going to be special to people.”

Cohen then brought up the infamous 2006 Oscars where “Crash” shockingly won best picture over presumed frontrunner “Brokeback Mountain.” Many industry pundits to this day consider the decision to be one of the Academy’s worst in history. “Brokeback” had already won the BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for best picture at that point in the season. Then “Crash” pulled up the controversial upset.

“I was very upset about the best picture loss,” Cohen said. “I mean, ‘Crash’? Is that what won?”

Williams then offered her own shade to the delight of the studio audience by asking. “I mean, what was ‘Crash’?”

“Thank you, I mean, who’s talking about ‘Crash’ right now?” Cohen responded to silence from his audience. “I hear a pin drop. Yes, very upset!”

Ang Lee told IndieWire last year that “Brokeback” winning best picture was so presumed that an Oscars stagehand told him to stay backstage and not go back to his seat after Lee was awarded best director. In the aftermath of the “Crash” upset, many pundits accused the Academy of homophobia.

CRASH is an affecting movie, though. It’s not like some soulless piece of shit won.

People act as if it were HERBIE, THE LOVE BUG.

by Anonymousreply 1April 4, 2025 9:38 PM

I feel like Michelle has been lucky with her Oscar noms. Her acting is meh

by Anonymousreply 2April 4, 2025 9:41 PM

Please, R1. Crash is treacle.

I mean, Oprah claimed to have a “Crash” moment, ffs.

It had Ryan Phillipe in it, ffs. No need to say more.

by Anonymousreply 3April 4, 2025 9:44 PM

Michelle Williams is a brilliant actress. One of our best.

by Anonymousreply 4April 4, 2025 9:45 PM

Crash NASTY!

Omg Datalounge went into hysterics when Crash won the Oscar

by Anonymousreply 6April 4, 2025 9:47 PM

The women out-acted the men in Brokeback.

by Anonymousreply 7April 4, 2025 9:52 PM

Crash won because there was a massive lobbying with Hollywood insiders by the large ensemble cast. It was a popularity contest in voting for a project made by your friends and fellow actors, rather than it was the best film of that year.

by Anonymousreply 8April 4, 2025 9:54 PM

I disagree, R7.

Heath Williams was amazing.

His acting was so subtle, yet powerful and moving.

I think that he portrayed Ennis Del Mar perfectly.

by Anonymousreply 9April 4, 2025 9:57 PM

R9 Who?

by Anonymousreply 10April 4, 2025 9:58 PM

Well Ernest Borgnine was not going to vote for a couple of gays.

by Anonymousreply 11April 4, 2025 9:58 PM

Never liked her. This comment is “crash” and pandering.

by Anonymousreply 12April 4, 2025 10:01 PM

I hated Ernest Borgnine and fey Tony Curtis so much after their homophobic comments.

Glad they are both dead.

by Anonymousreply 13April 4, 2025 10:01 PM

Neither was Tony Curtis. People were very vocal about it.

by Anonymousreply 14April 4, 2025 10:01 PM

To this day, I still haven't seen Crash.

What in the hell was it about, any way?

by Anonymousreply 15April 4, 2025 10:03 PM

When she asks “what was Crash anyway,” the answer jumps right out — cringey Oscar bait.

by Anonymousreply 16April 4, 2025 10:03 PM

Wasn’t Brokeback Mountain about fags? Why would non-fag Michelle even be nominated?

by Anonymousreply 17April 4, 2025 10:06 PM

Is Crash the one with car crash fetishists who fuck unhealed accident wounds? Because that is a daring best picture choice

by Anonymousreply 18April 4, 2025 10:12 PM

Michelle is right on this one.

Brokeback Mountain may have been a bit ahead of its time. I believe the Academy didn't for Brokeback for Best Picture out of homophobia. It was shameful.

by Anonymousreply 19April 4, 2025 10:54 PM

R18, that’s the 1996 David Cronenberg pic also called “Crash.”

by Anonymousreply 20April 4, 2025 11:42 PM

[quote] I hated Ernest Borgnine and fey Tony Curtis so much after their homophobic comments.

The irony being that Tony had a hermaphrodite child who now looks like Ernest Borgnine.

by Anonymousreply 21April 4, 2025 11:49 PM

[quote] Crash won because there was a massive lobbying with Hollywood insiders by the large ensemble cast. It was a popularity contest in voting for a project made by your friends and fellow actors, rather than it was the best film of that year.

The Aviator had a massive cast, was about Hollywood and Scorsese had no Oscar yet. It lost to Million Dollar Baby.

by Anonymousreply 22April 4, 2025 11:50 PM

“Crash” was also filmed in LA, with Hollywood actors ace extras ave crew.

“Brokeback Mountain” was mainly filmed in Alberta.

by Anonymousreply 23April 4, 2025 11:58 PM

She always comes across as a cunt in interviews. I think she's rather bland.

by Anonymousreply 24April 5, 2025 12:04 AM

I find her pretty much unwatchable. She belonged in Dawnson’s Creek and there she should have stayed

by Anonymousreply 25April 5, 2025 12:11 AM

Crash was sentimental, manipulative trash.

Brokeback Mountain was sentimental manipulative normal movie

As a gay man, and in politically, it was a pity Brokeback didn’t win. And yes, homophobic .

As a movie lover i am indifferent. Brokeback , in all its misery, always left me cold.

by Anonymousreply 26April 5, 2025 12:12 AM

I've long felt that CRASH won in part because it expressed a deep belief of the Academy's: Los Angeles is the center of the universe.

by Anonymousreply 27April 5, 2025 12:14 AM

I appreciate “Brokeback Mountain”. I think I’ve watched it since its initial release and thought it was alright.

Everyone delivered good performances, especially when you think about how old they all were. They were all under 25.

by Anonymousreply 28April 5, 2025 12:39 AM

I barely remember her being in the movie. She thinks she’s all that. She’s not all that.

by Anonymousreply 29April 5, 2025 1:03 AM

R29 is an imbecile.

by Anonymousreply 30April 5, 2025 1:07 AM

R1, The Love Bug is leagues superior to Crash.

The Crash that won the Oscar, not the car crash fetishist David Cronenberg film alluded to at r18, which I would wholeheartedly support for Best Picture. I mean, it had James Spader fucking Elias Koteas in the back seat of an old wreck.

Crash still remains an Oscar joke.

[quote] As a gay man, and in politically, it was a pity Brokeback didn’t win. And yes, homophobic .

Honey, this isn’t the presidency, it’s so ridiculous shitty Hollyweird award.

by Anonymousreply 33April 5, 2025 1:29 AM

I also love her as an actress. She has a great face for film because she's excellent with small looks and reactions. I love her sad eyes and quiet strength in some of her roles. I think she's one of the best of that generation. A bleaker Amy Adams.

by Anonymousreply 34April 5, 2025 1:35 AM

R31 Spader wasn't self conscious about roles that he played. Crash is a good example as is Secretary.

by Anonymousreply 35April 5, 2025 1:36 AM

Crash Twist? Crash Nasty!

by Anonymousreply 36April 5, 2025 1:38 AM

Michelle Williams is one of my favorite actresses working today.

I thought she was just a teen drama flash-in-the-pan until I saw her in Me Without You from about 25 years ago. It’s really a terrific movie. Perfect for anyone who’s had a terrible friend you can’t break from. She’s terrific in it.

I also loved her as Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon.

Michelle Lee looked dynamite in “The Love Bug,” R31. What a beautiful woman. Far more stunning than Michelle Williams.

Michelle Lee is the far superior Michelle.

by Anonymousreply 38April 5, 2025 2:48 AM

I watched the Oscars that night and when they announced the nominees for Best Picture the audience gave it a huge round of applause.

by Anonymousreply 39April 5, 2025 2:54 AM

Michelle Williams?

Michelle Williams NASTY.

by Anonymousreply 40April 5, 2025 2:57 AM

Why are you bringing up the goddamn “Love Bug,” r38? Buddy Hackett and Dean Jones weren’t fucking in Herbie’s backseat.

by Anonymousreply 41April 5, 2025 3:01 AM

Hey, R39, if you like Michele Lee so much, spell her name right.

by Anonymousreply 42April 5, 2025 3:31 AM

R39 Of course they did. About half the audience was either in it or very close to someone in it.

by Anonymousreply 43April 5, 2025 5:52 PM

[quote] Buddy Hackett and Dean Jones weren’t fucking in Herbie’s backseat.

Well, they should have been.

by Anonymousreply 44April 5, 2025 6:45 PM

Crash sucked but idk about Brokeback being 100% the deserving film either. It was good. It didn't floor me.

by Anonymousreply 45April 5, 2025 6:52 PM

I couldn't stand MW at one point, she was one of those VERY IMPORTANT ACTORs that took herself too seriously. But she seems a bit more chill now.

by Anonymousreply 46April 5, 2025 6:53 PM

CRASH is just SHORT CUTS with better-looking people, teachable moments, and racist characters.

by Anonymousreply 47April 5, 2025 6:56 PM

R16 like a story of a doomed gay love affair with a tragic ending, in a setting and time where it was a Very Bad Thing isn't oscar bait too lol.

by Anonymousreply 48April 5, 2025 6:57 PM

Frankly, I found CRASH a chore and was bored to death with BROKEBACK, so I didn't care about those films.

The other nominees were MUNICH, CAPOTE, and GOODNIGHT AND GOOD LUCK.

Thus, I was rooting for CAPOTE, because that's the one I enjoyed the most out of the bunch.

But, truth be told, my favorite that year was WALK THE LINE, which was a critical/financial success and grossed more than the other nominees.

I remember there was a shock when it missed out on Best Picture and Best Director, especially since it was a box-office smash and had received nods for Best Actor and Best Actress.

In fact, it would've been #1 at the box-office for an entire month (November 2005) had it not opened the same day as HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, so it had to settle for second place.

by Anonymousreply 49April 5, 2025 7:17 PM

Good Night and Good Luck was good. Wish I could see it on Broadway now.

by Anonymousreply 50April 5, 2025 8:56 PM

Crash was a pile of shit
