Cuban made a post on Bluesky on Wednesday shortly after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs that would hit more than 180 countries.
"It's not a bad idea to go to the local Walmart or big box retailer and buy lots of consumables now. From toothpaste to soap, anything you can find storage space for, buy before they have to replenish inventory," Cuban wrote.
"Even if it's made in the USA, they will jack up the price and blame it on tariffs," Cuban added.

Indeed, the prices of many domestic-made items are liable to go up. If, say, foreign-made widgets are out of reach for many Americans, then the demand for domestic-made ones would go up. The increased demand would cause increased prices. I'm not sure Cuban is exactly accurate saying that they will jump at an excuse to raise prices. If they can raise prices, they will. An excuse, although perhaps helpful for PR, is not the driver.

For the last month I have been buying paper goods during my regular weekend supermarket shopping. I'm not bulk buying, just purchasing my regular monthly supply of toilet paper, paper towels, tissues and paper plates, but doing it weekly instead of once a month, just to store then in the event there is a run on paper goods due to the Trump tariffs on Canada.

New vehicle sales surged in March. Although they typically rise in spring with tax refunds, frontrunning tariffs was likely a factor.
EVs did well. Trump hates the EV. Even though Biden put a 100% tariff on the Chinese EV that sells for $10K (which I woulda bought) he promoted EVs with tax breaks and wanted the U.S. to lead the way in production.
Everyone I know who bought a foreign EV is very satisfied with them. Maybe Trump's 'plan' to bring production back to the U.S. through tariffs will have some impact but I doubt it. U.S. automakers are always the last to excel at anything other than fat fucking trucks. It's always frustrated me how the country that invented cars figure out how to build one that anyone wants.

R29 this is the first weekend of the month so Costco is going to be real busy. I plan on going at 9 AM when they open tomorrow. I just got rid of so much stuff my pantry looks empty. I went through it last week and got rid of canned goods from 2018. I think IMO Olive Oil, Vanilla, and nuts like Almonds will be more expensive. I guess computers and TVs too. my Samsung Smart TV 55 inches, is about 7 years old. I'm wondering if I need to get a new one. I do have trouble streaming certain services, like Paramount Plus.

We are moving out of our standalone office space into a "WeWork" type of office situation where the rent includes all utilities and supplies (such as toilet paper, paper towels).
Since we have stuff leftover that we won't be able to use, I am now about to inherit 20 or so rolls of Costco tp and 10 or so rolls of paper towels.

I've started making quick trips to the market every 2-3 days (instead of once a week) to buy fresh produce on a strictly "as-needed" basis (vs. what I think I'll consume over a week) to curb my waste. And also: to catch any great mark-downs in the meat section due to short expiration-dates.
I buy a lot of fresh chicken for my dogs' food. I periodically switch it up with Cod or ground turkey for variety, but chicken is their main protein source, so I'm always on the lookout for a great deal. Ralphs/Kroger already has a pretty good deal on Kroger-brand Drumstick value-packs -- $5.00 for 4.5 pounds of drumsticks. When I stopped by two days ago (to buy some salad fixins)... a bunch of those drumstick packages had been marked down to $2.25 each (!) because they were going to expire today. I grabbed six of them! I wasn't entirely sure that they'd all fit in my freezer, but at 50 cents/per pound...I was determined to re-organize my freezer & make it happen.

She & her husband had returned from a three-week trip overseas on Thursday & needed to do a big-shop to replenish their cupboards & refrigerator. I asked if Costco was especially crowded, were people stocking-up on specific things?? She said no -- it didn't seem any more crowded, or crazy, than an average Friday. And in fact, it was less crowded than the last time she'd been there, six weeks ago, when people were making big runs on the 24-packs of eggs (before Costco limited them).

I used to be able to buy in bulk and store at home and my storage facility, but that was before COVID. During the pandemic cat food prices exploded and have only increased since then.
Thank God a wonderful former neighbor of mine who over 4-5 or so weeks trapped and transported a dozen raccoons away from my street. For years we had to buy giant bags of cheap-ish kibble to throw out to the fucking raccoons so they wouldn't bother my yard cats at their mealtimes. That was $15-$20 every other week.

The minute he was out of that bubble, where the GOP preselected his audiences and tested his messaging down to the zip code level, he could not manage. [quote] The increased demand would cause increased prices. I'm not sure Cuban is exactly accurate saying that they will jump at an excuse to raise prices.
That is the whole point behind protectionism and import substitution. By making imports and imported components for the final product more expensive, domestic production is protected from competition and has a chance to compete against cheap goods.
However, this only works if the domestic market is competitive. If it devolves into an oligopoly, as seen in the auto industry in the 1970s, quality declines, and only foreign competition can prompt a turnaround. Even then, brand loyalty, dealer allegiance, and personal relationships all delay the one-to-one comparisons.

Those NVIDIA GPU's are around $1,500 - $2,000, but we are on the verge of another GPU Apocalypse just like the last time Trump took office. They are saying those could cost as much as $3,000 in the next few months if things keep going the way they are now.
I bought a 3080Ti a few years ago during that mess and I felt like I won the lottery only paying $1,200 actual MSRP and not $2,000 scalper prices. The total price to build my PC with costume water cooling was about 5,500, I don't regret it. It's screaming fast and can handle shockingly huge files.

Got plenty of coffee, use a bidet, don't need any clothes or shoes, and bought a new Japanese car last year.
So except for food, I'm good.
Tariff away and make the MAGAts howl, I say!

I ended up buying a whole bunch of toilet paper at a local Walgreens that shutdown.
I bought my new Apple laptop/mini back in January because Trump was already talking about fucking things up back then.

R120,
R117 was discussing high end graphics processing units (GPUs) in response to my own prior R115 mentioning of my recent purchase of one (Nvidia 5080). They slot inside of desktop computers to power the graphical/monitor output and such. Because they have also proven so useful for advanced AI computing, this is all why the Nvidia corporation’s stock has performed so phenomenally well in recent years.
It’ll be the single fanciest GPU I’ve ever put to work in one of my own computers, so I’m looking forward to using it.
But yeah, kind of a niche field so it can all sound a bit foreign to those not accustomed to meddling around inside of computers frequently.

Olive oil lasts 1-2 years, closer to 1, I can smell it oxidising if it is a big vat with lots of air space after you have began using it.
Avocado oil 6 months.
Isn’t toilet paper manufactured locally?

Things on my costco list to stock up on before prices skyrocket: OTC meds and vitamins; shampoo/conditioner/soap/deodorant; garbage bags; TP (decided to just stop using paper towels altogether); coffee and tea; sugar/spices/vanilla extract/cocoa powder; a few imported wines I love/tequila
Going to order a 6-7 month supply of my tretinoin because it comes from Mexico. Going to buy new underwear, socks and summer shoes before prices shoot up.

Just ordered myself a bidet and 54-pack of reusable flannel wipes. Officially done with toilet paper. It's already up to almost $7 for a 4-pack of the cheapest stuff. I can only imagine how much more expensive it's going to get in a couple of weeks. I'll keep a roll or two around for guests, but that's it for me. No more paper towels either.

I heard that air conditioners (all kinds) are going to become scarce this summer because most are made in China. If you don't quite trust yours to get you through the coming hot months, consider grabbing one now while they're available.

I’m all for showing taxes separately so that people can know how much the government is taking from, but I know foreigners find it very strange to show the tax on goods separately, as they expect it to be all added together with only the total out of pocket price displayed.
