MY 24-YEAR OLD NEIGHBOR IS DEAD TO ME!

He was just a kid.

Last night I noticed that his balcony door was wide open, with his dog roaming in and out. I assumed he went on a road trip or something and had just left his dog to his own devices. But the dog has indeed been barking since Saturday night, and in that plaintive yelp that dogs use when they are in distress. This morning when I saw that his balcony was still wide open, I considered notifying the concierge, but I didn't do it. I just thought he was an irresponsible dog owner.

Fast forward to this afternoon and two of his friends are pounding on his door. So I go outside and tell them that his balcony door has been wide open for a day. They insisted that nothing was wrong, even as they continued banging. About thirty minutes later, the two friends were outside the apartment bawling. One of them took the poor dog away. Now the police are here.

Just a kid. And this is some Kitty Genovese shit where this kid has at least four neighbors (including myself) who could have intervened. But none of us did.

by Anonymousreply 92May 3, 2025 6:53 AM

Sad, OP. Hang in there.

by Anonymousreply 1March 31, 2025 11:46 PM

Intervene? Intervene how? In order to step up and do something, you must first know something was wrong. Did you hear the sounds of violence? A cry for help? Don’t blame yourself. You sound like a nice guy.

by Anonymousreply 2March 31, 2025 11:48 PM

I wonder what it was.

by Anonymousreply 3March 31, 2025 11:49 PM

Drugs, suicide, murder?

by Anonymousreply 4March 31, 2025 11:50 PM

He was likely already dead when you noticed the dog barking. Age 24, most likely a drug overdose.

by Anonymousreply 5March 31, 2025 11:51 PM

Sorry about your neighbor, OP. Also, poor dog knowing its owner was dead and not being able to anything about it.

I'd guess fentanyl.

by Anonymousreply 6March 31, 2025 11:52 PM

Or a suicide.

by Anonymousreply 7March 31, 2025 11:52 PM

How about murder!!

by Anonymousreply 8March 31, 2025 11:55 PM

Sometimes life doesn’t go as planned.

by Anonymousreply 9March 31, 2025 11:55 PM

You're certainly not the neighborhood Gladys Kravitz, are you OP?

by Anonymousreply 10April 1, 2025 12:01 AM

Actually he is, R10. He just didn’t do anything.

by Anonymousreply 11April 1, 2025 12:03 AM

OP, you couldn't find a less humorous title for your "sad" thread?

by Anonymousreply 12April 1, 2025 12:07 AM

Did he have a hot ass?

by Anonymousreply 13April 1, 2025 12:07 AM

Op you had me to you brought Kitty Gaseve. 1 outta ten bitch. It was too desperate. That is the intent you wanted this threads to discuss. You truly had me until then.

by Anonymousreply 14April 1, 2025 12:10 AM

It has all the hallmarks of a shark attack. Don’t blame yourself, OP — what could you have done against a 16 foot great white shark?

by Anonymousreply 15April 1, 2025 12:14 AM

So op what was the cause of death?

by Anonymousreply 16April 1, 2025 12:22 AM

2 out of 20.

by Anonymousreply 17April 1, 2025 12:23 AM

I thought he was either not home or else something was wrong with him. This was all based on the way the dog was barking. And last night when I saw the dog on the balcony, he was back on his hind quarters, erect and staring intently inside the apartment. Like he was studying something. I thought, who or what is that dog looking at? It was just off.

I really feel terrible because I was on the verge of posting a note on his door bitching him out about the dog barking. I even wrote something up and asked ChatGPT to soften the tone a little bit. But I decided not to leave it at his door.

You bitches will get a laugh out of that so I have posted a link where you can read the conversation I had with an AI about this.

I’m glad you conferred with a chatbot, OP. Your story becomes more convincing every time you post.

by Anonymousreply 19April 1, 2025 12:34 AM

About 20 yrs ago I had a teenage neighbor die of an overdose. He was a hugh school senior whose parents went out of town for a long weekend. They returned to find him dead. It was very sad that found him thar way.

by Anonymousreply 20April 1, 2025 12:35 AM

[quote] And this is some Kitty Genovese shit where this kid has at least four neighbors (including myself) who could have intervened. But none of us did.

Way off base.

by Anonymousreply 21April 1, 2025 12:44 AM

The cat did it.

by Anonymousreply 22April 1, 2025 12:46 AM

A jackal, R16! Jackal! It's a jackal! It looks like a jackal! Jackal? It's a jackal! Jackal?

by Anonymousreply 23April 1, 2025 12:47 AM

Sometime little sister misses when she aims her gun.

by Anonymousreply 24April 1, 2025 12:52 AM

Can you have his things?

by Anonymousreply 25April 1, 2025 12:55 AM

Was he an oil rig worker in the Gulf?

by Anonymousreply 26April 1, 2025 12:57 AM

The dog knows something, but he's not going to speak, even if it did, you don't speak Canine. You should try plying them with a few milk bones and see if you can charade it out of him.

Seriously though, if that were me, I'd have gone over and knocked, then called for a wellness check. Dogs can smell heart attacks, seizures, potential strokes, etc. He may have already been dead but atleast the 'what if' guilt would be ameliorated, if it were me in your shoes.

by Anonymousreply 27April 1, 2025 1:00 AM

Enjoy those blank stares you'll get when making a "Gladys Kravitz" reference!

Everyone under sixty: Who's Gladys Kravitz?

by Anonymousreply 28April 1, 2025 1:09 AM

Howdy neighbors!

An open door for hours is never a good sign, particularly when there is a distressed pet about.

Another sign of something wrong might be you see your neighbor's front wide door open during their usual work hours with belongings being stacked up outside.

Or you see a flickering light through a window and notice there's something on fire. (This happened on Hallowe'en and everyone thought it was for effect.)

by Anonymousreply 29April 1, 2025 3:42 AM

r28 I'm 56 and I know who Gladys Kravitz is.

by Anonymousreply 30April 1, 2025 3:49 AM

Didn't they debunk the whole Kitty Genovese thing years ago?

by Anonymousreply 31April 1, 2025 4:00 AM

Wow, 56! There goes my whole argument!

by Anonymousreply 32April 1, 2025 4:02 AM

r12 Exactly, because this OP made up this entire stupid story.

by Anonymousreply 33April 1, 2025 4:03 AM

This wasn’t your fault, and there was no way you could have known what was really happening.

About a week ago, my neighbor, an older man who lives with what I assumed was his daughter, was yelling again. He was always ranting and hollering, so I had gotten used to it. I heard him cursing all the time.

I heard him shouting, "Help me! I know you can hear me, you son of a bitch!" I hesitated. It wasn’t my business, and I didn’t want to make things harder on his daughter.

Fifteen minutes passed, and he was still yelling. Finally, I went to his door. He was still at it, so I called 911. The police showed up, broke down the door, and it turned out he had Alzheimer’s, had fallen, and burned himself in the kitchen.

I keep thinking about it, but the truth is, I just didn’t know. I did go to another neighbor to see if they could get in contact with the daughter but they were like just call the police.

But in your case, an open door isn't going to be enough to summon the police. Neither is a balcony dog. How could you know based off that?

by Anonymousreply 34April 1, 2025 4:08 AM

r34 "they were like"

by Anonymousreply 35April 1, 2025 4:11 AM

R35 Ms. Grammar Enforcer has arrived! I’ll be sure to take my time debating whether to call 911 if I ever overhear someone trying to murder you. Wouldn’t want to interrupt before they’ve had a fair chance to finish their work!

by Anonymousreply 36April 1, 2025 4:17 AM

My next door neighbors are like OP, they would see something and do nothing.

by Anonymousreply 37April 1, 2025 4:25 AM

It was definitely a small faction.

by Anonymousreply 38April 1, 2025 4:33 AM

Pitch it to these guys, but drop the Kitty Genovese bit. Too over the top.

by Anonymousreply 40April 1, 2025 4:43 AM

R28 I'm 37 and I know who Gladys Kravitz is. You must be new around here.

by Anonymousreply 41April 1, 2025 4:49 AM

What? Gladys Knight married Zoe Kravitz?

by Anonymousreply 42April 1, 2025 4:54 AM

Is his apartment better than yours? Maybe the landlord will let you switch.

You might even get a discount on rent because of the death… which might put off new tenants?

by Anonymousreply 43April 1, 2025 5:51 AM

[QUOTE]Didn't they debunk the whole Kitty Genovese thing years ago?

I don't know whether it's been disputed or not, but I recall reading that neighbors did not call for help because Kitty was an out lesbian, known even to neighbors. It was a hate crime, allegedly.

by Anonymousreply 44April 1, 2025 5:51 AM

Why would anyone make something like this up, R33?

You're only suspicious of that because it's something YOU would do. But not everyone is as disordered as you, Miss Dark Triad.

Here is a picture that I took this afternoon when I was texting my sister for advice. Do you think I just happened to have this picture on hand so that I could create an elaborate scenario on this outdated joke of a website?

by Anonymousreply 55April 1, 2025 1:51 PM

Was he cute? If not Meh.

by Anonymousreply 56April 1, 2025 1:53 PM

Sadly, he was not cute. I would describe him as "goth art student." Black hair, green trench coat.

by Anonymousreply 57April 1, 2025 8:01 PM

The goth art student's parents must have money if he lived in a concierge building.

by Anonymousreply 58April 1, 2025 8:12 PM

The r45 pic suggests you are both pretty high up. How many stories is that?

by Anonymousreply 59April 1, 2025 8:17 PM

If I saw a door was open for a long period of time and the dog was barking in a distressed way, I would have called the police and ask for a wellness check. I hope my neighbors would do the same for me.

by Anonymousreply 60April 1, 2025 8:21 PM

RIP Joel

by Anonymousreply 61April 1, 2025 8:26 PM

What do you pay for rent there? What amenities?

by Anonymousreply 62April 1, 2025 11:42 PM

Gladys Kravitz was colored!! Was she friends with Dinah Shore's hidden out of wedlock colored baby? I just don't understand the world anymore!!

by Anonymousreply 63April 2, 2025 12:20 AM

[quote] They insisted that nothing was wrong, even as they continued banging.

The writing here might be at fault. They were worried enough to bang on his door. Maybe they said something like.. 'we're not assuming a crisis but we need to find out!'

Don’t tell Mom the Rent Boy’s Dead 😱

by Anonymousreply 65April 2, 2025 1:15 AM

OP, what city is this in? I ask because of those strange train tracks on the ground outside your building.

by Anonymousreply 66May 2, 2025 12:43 AM

This is for dipshit R67: OP's ORIGINAL POST was on March 31, 2025, which was a Monday. So, in Smart Person Time, a period of two days elapsed.

Two. Two days.

Look at a calendar and do the math, idiot.

by Anonymousreply 72May 2, 2025 1:22 AM

OKAY so the guy was dead two days and the dog was barking/whining in distress for two days. Door open for two days. Perfectly normal, nothing to see here.

by Anonymousreply 73May 2, 2025 1:35 AM

Is that taxing your addled brain, R73?

Tell me what you're confused about so that I can explain it to you.

by Anonymousreply 74May 2, 2025 4:03 AM

[quote]OP, what city is this in? I ask because of those strange train tracks on the ground outside your building.

It's Revere Beach, MA. Ocean Avenue.

Those tracks are literally the terminus of the Blue Line. The Wonderland T stop is about 200 feet to the south.

It's not the most beautiful view in the world. But the "city view" apartments in my building are priced around $800 less than the "ocean view" apartments. I can live with the "Iron Curtain" view in exchange for the large apartment plus the building amenities that I am getting at a discount!

by Anonymousreply 75May 2, 2025 4:15 AM

[quote]What do you pay for rent there? What amenities?

My rent is $3,300, it's a two bedroom unit, one of which I am using as home office since I work from home.

The usual amenities. 24-hour onsite concierge. Bodega. Gym. Pool. Simulated golf putting room. Library. Bar with free beer on weekends.

by Anonymousreply 76May 2, 2025 4:19 AM

Based on that photo at r45, you live in Flatlandia, OP.

by Anonymousreply 77May 2, 2025 4:22 AM

Ok thank you r75, I had never seen an arrangement like that before.

by Anonymousreply 78May 2, 2025 4:28 AM

[quote]If I saw a door was open for a long period of time and the dog was barking in a distressed way, I would have called the police and ask for a wellness check. I hope my neighbors would do the same for me.

Maybe. I just assumed that he was an irresponsible kid who was either traveling or doing an extended weekend bender.

I would never under any circumstances send the police to someone's home unless I was absolutely certain something was wrong. The police force entry during wellness checks in this state. That's serious shit in my view.

And by the time it was clear that something was wrong, his friends were already here sniffing things out.

His parents JUST came this weekend to clean the apartment out, though. It took a while for them to do that.

by Anonymousreply 79May 2, 2025 4:29 AM

So how did he die?

by Anonymousreply 80May 2, 2025 4:30 AM

No problem, R78!

by Anonymousreply 81May 2, 2025 4:31 AM

Nobody will tell me anything, R80. The staff here have been tightlipped since it happened. I have asked for details but no one is divulging. So it's a mystery.

by Anonymousreply 82May 2, 2025 4:32 AM

R76 I didn't realize we called them bodegas in Boston.

by Anonymousreply 83May 2, 2025 4:42 AM

R74 I'm not confused. You yourself wrote "And this is some Kitty Genovese shit where this kid has at least four neighbors (including myself) who could have intervened. But none of us did." Then you seem annoyed when someone agrees that, yes, you could have intervened, but did nothing.

by Anonymousreply 84May 2, 2025 4:47 AM

[Quote] So how did he die?

He died fighting an oil rig fire, Rose.

by Anonymousreply 85May 2, 2025 6:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 86May 2, 2025 6:37 AM

R76, isn’t every onsite “grocerette” situated inside an apartment building called a bodega?

That’s just my name for it, mind you.

by Anonymousreply 87May 2, 2025 10:39 AM

R84;
