Everyone knew what she was like when she was cast, so this is Marc's fault to begin with
But aww daddy had to leave his family to do his job, boo-fucking-hoo.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 27, 2025 1:56 AM |
I told Dad to cast Beanie as Snow White.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 27, 2025 1:57 AM |
The son wrote it in response to a specific verbal attack against his father. He didn’t just randomly bring it up.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 27, 2025 2:02 AM |
The fundamental mistake happened before Ziegler was cast.
That is, deciding to remake Snow White.
And before anybody comes for, I’m not letting Ziegler off the hook. I
I agree with what this guy posted.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 27, 2025 2:04 AM |
I actually give credit to any 20 year old who has the strength of character to still uphold their support after essentially being corporately Court marshalled into doing the opposite. Respect
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 27, 2025 2:04 AM |
Superstar Ben Platt?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 27, 2025 2:08 AM |
The film was a ticking time bomb. Her comments certainly didn't help and I find it hard to imagine any studio willing to put up with her going forward.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 27, 2025 2:10 AM |
He couldn’t have called her instead of flying across the country?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 27, 2025 2:10 AM |
[quote] He couldn’t have called her instead of flying across the country?
It was unfortunately necessary to impress upon the cunt the seriousness of her actions.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 27, 2025 2:16 AM |
Of course this shit was gna flop. The bitch was talking shit about it a year ago. Gen Z was raised in neurosis so they think that this behavior is kosher. Why the fuck would u bash a multi billion dollar film, you are spearheading and selected for looks and charisma. Bitch if you was that mafuckin principled, you would have declined the role. But this generation wears hypocrisy like a badge of honor.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 27, 2025 2:22 AM |
Geez, let's hope that karma balanced things out and gave Ben all the talent in the family...

[QUOTE]corporately Court marshalled into doing the opposite.
Oh, dear. And you probably don't know why.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 27, 2025 2:28 AM |
Ziegler’s performance seems to be the only thing critics liked about the movie. If anyone should be blamed for this disaster, it’s the producer.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 27, 2025 2:30 AM |
I disagree with you, R13. Ziegler has been trashing the movie and being obnoxious for months. I would never want to see this movie or anything that Ziegler was in. She seems dense, entitled and annoying.
Ziegler put out this energy before the film came out. Why would the producer be blamed? Ziegler promoted herself as an unlikeable and ignorant being.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 27, 2025 2:38 AM |
[quote]Ziegler’s performance seems to be the only thing critics liked about the movie. If anyone should be blamed for this disaster, it’s the producer.
Exactly. Being difficult, hard to work with, and constantly saying crap about movies you've been in shouldn't stop you from being cast in more movies.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 27, 2025 2:39 AM |
The timeline I read was he ordered her to remove her X post "Free Palestine". How does that have anything to do with the movie?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 27, 2025 2:42 AM |
The only 'crap' she said about the movie, long before itsrelease, was that the movie is more modern and updated . Kind of an endorsement if you ask me.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 27, 2025 2:46 AM |
Jonah is certainly better looking than his brother.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 27, 2025 2:49 AM |
She also doesn’t look like Snow White. At all. There is that.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 27, 2025 2:50 AM |
R18 = Noah Galvin
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 27, 2025 2:52 AM |
R18 wow can't believe they're related. Ben has a face for non-functioning transistor radio.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 27, 2025 2:54 AM |
R20 😂 right. Or either a paid troll or Jonah himself. His brother is a fucking 9, and would have his hole wrecked. His brother is naturally good looking.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 27, 2025 2:54 AM |
imagine thinking this was why the movie failed. No, it failed because it sucked

“His employee.” Go fuck yourself, kid.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 27, 2025 3:00 AM |
R23, it wasn’t even a movie, it was, according to Platt, an “enormous piece of Disney IP.” That sounds like a fun evening. Who doesn’t want to watch “an enormous piece of Disney IP”?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 27, 2025 3:04 AM |
That’s literally what it is r25. Snow White is that.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 27, 2025 3:23 AM |
Movies stand on their own.
If it were a great movie, it would have been a big hit. Apparently Ziegler is the only good thing about it. You can’t blame her for the movie crashing
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 27, 2025 3:29 AM |
In what world is Ben Platt a “superstar”??
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 27, 2025 3:30 AM |
A single movie can be an entire industry which is why he called it IP. Think of licensing, likenesses, sequels, toys, clothing, books blah blah. Much bigger than this dizzy actress who just ruined her career.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 27, 2025 3:34 AM |
Oddly, this is the family that welcomed Noah Galvin into its fold.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 27, 2025 3:35 AM |
R29 that’s bullshit and even you know it.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 27, 2025 3:40 AM |
Snow White has been an IP since 1939 dear….
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 27, 2025 3:41 AM |
Do kids today even care about Snow White as “valuable IP”? It’s old, kind of dark & problematic, and not a story like Cinderella that’s been redone so many times that kids are more familiar with it. Disney probably should have just left this one in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 27, 2025 3:42 AM |
[quote] “His employee.” Go fuck yourself, kid.
She is an employee, R24. Or was. Little chance of that happening again.
She was hired to do a specific job. And there is no doubt she signed comprehensive contracts that involved her behavior both on and off camera in regard to this project. That’s just SOP.
She was little more than an employee and only more than that to the naive and starstruck who believe celebrities can do no wrong. That movies revolve only around them and their amazing efforts.
She wasn’t hired for her politics. She wasn’t hired for her cultural critique of a near-90-year-old film. She was hired to give a performance and be a proper ambassador for that film. And she failed.
You sound like a celebrity worshipper who looks at performers like deities, as if there were more than the very basic contractors they are.
That’s all they are. Work-for-hire performers. Commodities. It’s show “business.”
Our sick culture has sadly elevated them to be far more important than they actually are.
They are clowns. Court jesters. Amusing and entertaining at best but little more than that.
She was an employee. A very bad one.
And like any bad employee who becomes more trouble than they are worth, it then becomes time to show them the door.
As that now unemployable twat Rachel herself said, “It’s Hollywood, baby!”
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 27, 2025 3:46 AM |
Snow White is a classic Disney princess who has never gone away.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 27, 2025 3:46 AM |
R26, R31, R34, I’m quite aware of what Snow White is. It was once a revolutionary film. It is now a device for cranking out lucrative tie-in deals and therefore obligated to provide the blandest movie going experience as possible.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 27, 2025 3:50 AM |
R38 it is no different than any other Disney film. Only difference is this was THE FIRST

by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 27, 2025 3:54 AM |
I agree with him but his response was too long-winded. He should have said something like "She was an employee and her bad judgement was putting the entire project at risk. Her age and gender are irrelevant. Get fucked".
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 27, 2025 3:54 AM |
All of you claiming Snow White is old IP are correct. But this darker skinned unique version is new IP. New opportunities for broader licensing opportunities. Now little girls of all colors can dream of being Snow White instead of just Jasmine or Mulan.
To be honest, I think it's a crap idea to begin with for the exact same reason why I believe that James Bond cannot be a person of color, Or female. Or American, He is a white, Englishman. If you want to change a character that much, create a new one. But I digress,
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 27, 2025 3:55 AM |

My question is, why the hell would Platt need to fly to New York to reprimand Zegler in person? Didn't he think he could have made his point clear through a phone call or Zoom or whatever?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 27, 2025 4:09 AM |
When every movie you make takes 3 yrs to come out in order to distance itself from you, Miss Hitless needs to take note.
And learn how to float, bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 27, 2025 4:09 AM |
R46 If he had to fly to see her in person, it was probably because she was being difficult. Maybe Zooms weren’t working.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 27, 2025 4:10 AM |
R14, I agree with you about Zegler, but you spelled her name wrong -- four times.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 27, 2025 4:12 AM |
I doubt that your average American understands Middle East conflicts, or really knows much of a difference between the stances of Palestinians and Israelis. Certainly a performer being on one side or the other would barely register with most movie goers.

R11 no. All the brothers are very intelligent and talented men.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 27, 2025 4:15 AM |
[quote]If he had to fly to see her in person, it was probably because she was being difficult. Maybe Zooms weren’t working.
What do you mean? Do you think he had already confronted her via Zoom or on the phone or whatever and it didn't work, so he thought he needed to fly to New York to confront her in person, and that would do the trick?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 27, 2025 4:19 AM |
If I were the producer, I’d make sure any meeting with this crazy bitch was face to face with witnesses. Who knows what she’d do with a Zoom recording. Her disorder means she’s potentially dangerous.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 27, 2025 4:25 AM |
Well, my goodness! She’s quite the little spitfire!
[quote]Three months later, following the presidential election, Zegler posted “Fuck Donald Trump” and “May Trump supporters … never know peace” on Instagram. Disney had had enough, given that the star was signaling to half the potential audience of an already troubled film plagued by costly reshoots to stay home.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 27, 2025 4:44 AM |
Oh, honey, the film was a pile of shit even without Zegler or Gal Gadot’s (who is one the worst thing to ever hit cinema) comments.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 27, 2025 4:44 AM |
She went from nothing to A-list and from A-list to nothing in what must be record time.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 27, 2025 4:47 AM |
R52, an in-person meeting indicates that she has seriously fucked up and that she needs to fix it. Also she may have been trying to avoid phone calls and/or video conferences.

Snow White is currently trending on IMDb at 1.6/10. I don't think a major release like this has EVER had a rating that low on that site. Obviously it has been rating-bombed by thousands of people who didn't see the film, but either way, it's BAD. Disney shit the bed on this film in more ways than one can count. It honestly probably shouldn't have even been released.

The metacritic score is 50 while the user score is 1.2/10. Obviously a ton of people who don't like her politics are dog-piling on the movie. Agreed that she seems like an asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 27, 2025 7:37 AM |
I just don't care. The live action movies flat out suck. I haven't seen a good one yet, not even Beauty And The Beast. I want this movie to fail so they will just stop making them.

It seems evident from what they have written that some critics are giving the movie a higher rating that they should because they agree with her politics.

R46, people her age are too afraid to answer a phone. No. Really.

Except r2 the character would have been called Snow Plough.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | March 27, 2025 8:58 AM |
This is so silly.
Firstly, Zegler has been outspoken and unapolgetic in her advocacy for Palestinians. And more power to her for it. There is an incredible amount of pressure on entertainers (even those enormously sympathetic to the plight of Palestinians) to remain silent. She's one of the few stars (along with Mark Ruffalo, Susan Sarandon, Cate Blanchett) to hold firm. And if you look at polling of Gen Zers and Millennials, you'll find she's aligned with the people of her generation.
As for the film's poor performance...
As others have pointed out, Zegler is one of the ONLY elements of the film that was generally well reviewed.
The same cannot be said of her costar Gal Gadot, whose success remains baffling. In fact, all you need to do is search Gal on TikTok and Instagram and Twitter right now to see endless memes about how bad an actress she has been her entire career. People still joke about her line readings in films like Wonder Woman and Death on the Nile.
Lastly, while Snow White is, of course, a classic, anyone who came of age when it was a newer film is either six feet under or living in a memory care facility. So... the likelihood of it having this built-in audience that was reared on the original animated film (like Lion King, Aladdin etc.) was going to be slimmer.
From the controversy over whether to use live action actors for the dwarfs, to the racists outraged that a (frankly, white-passing) Latina was playing Snow White, this film has had a bad aura over it for months and months. Only flawless execution and rave reviews were going to save it and THAT was not going to happen.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | March 27, 2025 9:10 AM |
R32 points out an amusing irony
Noah Galvin famously did an interview for The Real O’Neals. I can’t remember what he said was controversial but you can look it up
Disney brought him into the office and from what I remember they put the fear of God in him. I want to say the actual quote was “they screamed and screamed.”

What r61 said. In-person meetings are a common tactic used in many different businesses to confront an employee when they have seriously fucked up. It's standard operating procedure.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | March 27, 2025 10:58 AM |
Disney is trying to scapegoat her for their own bad decisions. The idea that this film would've been a success without her social media stuff is idiotic.
And yes, one of those bad decisions that Disney and Marc Platt made was casting Zegler. It was perfectly obvious from the West Side Story promo period what she was like, and yet they decided to cast her. That's their fault, not hers.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 27, 2025 11:20 AM |
She is actually very good in the role according to most reviews
The biggest failure was the casting of Gadot and the choice of director Marc Webb, which again are the producers’ fault
by Anonymous | reply 85 | March 27, 2025 11:29 AM |
Not a big fan of Miss Zegler but anyone who hates Trump with passion and is against the genocide the Israelis are commiting in Gaza is fine in my book.
I have little sympathy for Marc Platt, the man who foisted his talentless rabbit-faced nepo baby son Ben upon the world.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 27, 2025 11:41 AM |
This grassroots campaign from psycho wokesters who are fans of Rachel to shift this colossal failure from her twat mouth to Gal’s acting ability is pathetic.
Gal is no Stella Adler, but she’s a team player and has done her job as a proper ambassador for this film. Unlike that entitled cunt Zegler, whose desperation for attention - any attention - put a bullseye on this project from before the first frame was shot.
Gal is the one who needed extra security because Zegler’s political statements resulted in threats to Gal’s life. What performer, producer or creative would want to work with this bitch after this debacle?
There’s one other difference: Gal will continue to be a working actress. Rachel‘s film career is deader than “Snow White’s” box office.
She’s an unlikable, unprofessional piece of Cluster B shit. And now she’s box office poison.
Bye bitch 👋.

[quote]Obviously a ton of people who don't like her politics are dog-piling on the movie.
Is that really what's happening here? Or are people trying to nuke the movie because Disney silenced her opinions on Gaza?
They're in a no-win situation because the movie also features Gal Gadot, so they're getting those 1s from both sides of the terminally online political spectrum. It's kinda amazing, the way that strip of dirt half a world away manages to unite people as much as it divides. Thank fuck I'm out of that cult and just observing the whole thing with a vat of popcorn in my lap.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | March 27, 2025 11:55 AM |
This movie would have been crap with or without her, but people forget that she has been digging her own grave for quite some time now.
Her big break was getting cast in West Side Story. She was invited to the Oscars but was NOT nominated. This was while she was filming Snow White. Production expected her to skip the Oscars, as is common for even A-list stars with noms who are in the middle of the shoot unless otherwise contractually negotiated. She threw a fit and essentially accused production of being racist and misogynist for not releasing her to go to the broadcast. Under public scrutiny (height of me too), they did let her go at an enormous cost since it halted production for days since they were filming far away.
She sealed her fate with this stunt. Almost everything she has released since then was already under contract, so she really hasn't been signed on for anything else.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | March 27, 2025 12:12 PM |
She’s not an employee, r36. She’s a contractor. But my impatience with young Mr. Platt has nothing to with my sympathies for Miss Zegler (I have none) and everything to do with the fact that he has nothing to do with the situation and resorts to sticking his nose in with a “you work for my DAD” retort that makes him sound like a spoiled ten-year-old.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | March 27, 2025 1:11 PM |
[quote] She’s not an employee, [R36]. She’s a contractor.
That’s semantic bullshit. Contractors are employees. You are hired and paid to perform a job for several months. That makes you an employee.
Contractors today have healthcare and other benefits just like FTEs depending on the scenario. And they are expected to follow the same rules as FTEs lest they wish to no longer be employed.
She wasn’t mowing the lawn for $50. She had a long/term commitment of significant scope that lasted years for this project.
Or did.

So DLers would rather take the side of the morally bankrupt company that has just recently turned its back on gays to cosy up to Trump rather than consider that maybe a film didn't flop because of some tweets?
by Anonymous | reply 94 | March 27, 2025 1:48 PM |
R80 I remember that interview. It got his sitcom cancelled. He called Bryan Singer a pedophile, outed Garrett Clayton (without mentioning his name as Garrett was a Disney star and had a guest role on The Real O'Neals) and bitched about Eric Stonestreet being straight and playing a gay character on Modern Family.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | March 27, 2025 1:56 PM |
It did not get his sitcom cancelled at all, in fact they got a second series after the interview.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | March 27, 2025 1:59 PM |
R94 I don’t care about Disney but even I can see that Rachel is a PR nightmare. She’s chronically online and explosive. She reacts before thinking things through. You don’t want that as a lead actress. Look at how Halle handled the backlash from her casting as Ariel. She was gracious and people went out in force to support her. Rachel comes across as entitled and extremely aggravating.
She needs to focus on her West End debut and leave this behind her. Maybe in a few years she can make a comeback à la JLow.

This zero sum game is why the world is in the dire situation it is today.
Disney can be an evil company and Rachel Zegler can be an insufferable, narcissistic twat whose thirst for any attention and destructive comments led to a huge film flopping.
Both of these things can be true at the same time.
“Take the side.” What bullshit.
Grow up.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | March 27, 2025 2:11 PM |
r97 And that was all the case before Disney hired her. So whose fault is it?
r98 And yet in your 12 posts in this thread, you've only knocked her, not Disney. She didn't cast herself in the role. And if you genuinely think this film would've been a hit if not for her social media, you're a moron.

r101 Oh please, DLers were bitching about her attitude on social media before WSS was even released. But even if you're that desperate to excuse Disney - from Variety:
[quote]Months later at D23, she criticized the original 1937 “Snow White,” noting that the prince “literally stalks” the heroine. One top agent says that was the moment that Disney allowed Zegler to control the narrative: “The first time she shoots her mouth off, you nip it in the bud.” Instead, the studio said nothing, and purists began to revolt. And as time went on, Disney became increasingly loath to weigh in on anyone’s speech considering that the studio was sued in 2024 by actress Gina Carano, who claims she was fired from “The Mandalorian” for voicing her opinions on hot-button issues.
This is 100% the fault of Platt and Disney. She was their choice

The movie must really suck for all this rock throwing to be happening.
This was a bomb from its' inception and this dumb girl stepped right in to be the reason for it.
Before any of this there was the PC bullshit about the dwarfs. And then it continued to implode.
Disney owes Rachel a muffin basket for causing a distraction. She has managed to redirect attention from the studios' multiple failures on this one.

[quote] [R98] And yet in your 12 posts in this thread, you've only knocked her, not Disney. She didn't cast herself in the role. And if you genuinely think this film would've been a hit if not for her social media, you're a moron
Disney didn’t call its crown jewel piece of animation “creepy” and “dated.” Disney didn’t claim the male lead’s scenes could all be deleted because “That’s Hollywood, baby!” Disney didn’t draw two-years worth of negative attention to a prestige project that snowballed into such a disaster that an entire Variety story was dedicated to what a destructive bitch she is. Disney didn’t dismissively refer to her costar as a “a professional pageant queen.” Disney didn’t stir her online minions into a frenzy that required them to pay for additional security for her costar.
That was all Rachel, the narcissistic twat.
Speaking of creepy, how fucking weird that you blocked me just so you could see what comments I’ve made and then unblocked me just to comment back to me. I’ve never cared enough to do that to anyone even though it’s well known that’s the only way to perform that.
Are you Rachel’s agent? A fired Disney employee?
Either way, I can see why you so stridently defend her as you’re just as disordered and fucked up as she is.

In fairness (and I never thought I'd say that about a Platt), at least Jonah went on regular Jeopardy!, not the celebrity version or some easier game show. Jeopardy! archive shows he got the most answers correct that day, but made some dumb mistakes, including a costly one on a DD. Mixing up Petrushka and Firebird is an almost unforgiveable error tho.

The talk and press interviews before WSS opened was all very "woke", r110. I know some here hate that word, but it fits in some cases. They (not just Zegler) really went overboard with the focus on how much more diverse the new version was and how the original film was problematic. They decided to sell it as if the entire world was made up of Tumblr and pre-Elon era Twitter users.

R113 - I agree.
Going back and redoing or canceling pieces of culture because it doesn't fit today's standards can be offensive to a lot of people who grew up with it.
It's a GRIMM fairy tale - a German 18th century story.
If you don't like it - write a NEW unique storyline - not a revision trashing the old one.
Like most Grimm fairy tales - Snow White is a VERY dark piece of literature. Maybe just let it be and move on. And you have to know you're going to get pushback when Snow White's main characteristic is her ultra white skin - and you cast a Latina. On purpose. Yet you still call it Snow Whte.
C'mon.

Secondly, the bad press was not just about Zegler but decisions Disney made themselves not even related to Zegler. Funny how you ignore that.

by Anonymous | reply 127 | March 27, 2025 4:19 PM |
Alright - so I had to sleuth a bit about what all the fuss is about.
1) With the release of the first SW trailer, she commented about how proud she was then she attached a tweet 1 min after - And always, remember Free Palestine. They asked her to remove it and she wouldn't. They didn't want the trailer to be embroiled in controversy. That tweet got more attention than the trailer.
2) After the post, Gal Gadot got death threats for being Israeli and they had to hire personal security for her. Rachel wouldn't remove it. It wasn't on her own social media - it was attached to the trailer. She was getting her co-star in trouble by association and she didn't care. And didn't care the producers wanted it removed. It's still there.
3) 3 months later she posts "Fuck the Orange Man" and "May Trump supporters know no peace". So that's half of America. And because of the above tweet she stayed home and they had to reshoot a lot of scenes, which increased the film's costs. The producer AGAIN visited her again flew out to her - and she wouldn't remove it. She said she's working with a social media guru (paid by Disney) and wouldn't stop. Much later she apologized - but damage was done.
4) Prior to this, she complained that Disney did not invite her to the Oscars for WWS - which was because she was already shooting SW in London under contract and it would cost days in lost shooting. Disney caved and got her a ticket to go.
5) She called the Prince in the original SW a 'stalker' multiple times. How was the Prince a stalker - at all? He came across her in the forest in the 1937 film and then took pity and kissed her to wake her up?
6) She called Gal Gadot a 'a professional pageant queen', which is a slam on her being an actress. That's her co-star. Gal did enter a Miss Universe pageant or similar and won Miss Isreal, I think - but she was never a professional beauty pageant woman.
She sounds like the Chapell Roan of Gen Z actresses. None of these comments were necessary and she's old enough to know better.

Yes, and this included Rita Moreno lamenting how few actual Latino performers there were in the original movie -- a lament she voiced even in an interview when she was seated beside George Chakiris, her fellow Oscar winner for the original movie, who was certainly not Latino. The sad fact is that some people will say anything without thinking about it first, even actors in major interviews.

R132 - yes we all know but Holllywood is about $$ and getting asses in seats. The latino population was 3.5% of US total in 1960. Natalie Wood was on a roll and would drive interest.
Sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes it wasn't about racism whatsoever - it was about audience and making box office money. Living in NYC or LA at the time, you may not have thought the US population was only 3.5% - but it was.
NY and LA is not America, unfortunately. Look at gays and lesbians - how many gay or lesbian characters are there on actual TV shows? And most have been played by straight actors historically. Do you hear us bitching about that all the time?

I am amazed Jonah Platt got himself involved in all this, given how much his brother has suffered from charges of nepotism (Ben Platt is considered the absolutely quintessential "nepo baby"). What do the Platts gain by denouncing Rachel Zegler publicly when she's already being criticized so heavily in the press and seems to have been already blackballed by Hollywood? Instead of hurting her further, this just draws attention yet again to the fact that Marc Platt gets easy work in Hollywood for his sons.

It is a European tale. They could have readapted it. Why cast a non white actor and then try to justify it? Something is wrong with White people. Their inability to own up to their great culture, contributions to civilization, instead, they are letting useless leftists bully them into disowning their own great culture. And most of these leftist bullies are white with a savior complex. What are they saving non-white people from? I do not understand. But everywhere in the west, whites have been infected by a bad disease of the white savior complex. Being nondiscriminatory or supremacist is one thing, but bearing the burden for the ill-governed societies of the world is something else.

by Anonymous | reply 150 | March 27, 2025 8:00 PM |
When some people objected to the casting of the title character in the live action remake of THE LITTLE MERMAID, I thought that was ridiculous, because there's absolutely no reason why Ariel needs to be white or any other specific race or ethnicity. I mean, she's a mermaid! But Snow White is one of very few fairy tale characters -- maybe the only one? -- named for her complexion, so to object to a POC being cast in the role is NOT racist, it's a completely valid objection on artistic grounds. And for pity's sake, not every classic property needs to be remade with POC in the leads, especially not when Disney has (at least in recent decades) been giving us so many movies with POC very much front and center.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | March 27, 2025 8:04 PM |
R151 They could make the next 20 movies with a POC lead and that would not compare to the hundred of years where white people have been front and center. It’s always “woe is me” with you lot.

[quote]They could make the next 20 movies with a POC lead and that would not compare to the hundred of years where white people have been front and center. It’s always “woe is me” with you lot.
Well, they haven't been front and center in movies for hundreds of years, because there haven't been movies for hundreds of years. And anyway, that's not the point. Nearly all of the classic movies and theatrical plays and musicals, etc. were the products of white culture, so of course they were going to be cast accordingly. Plus there was the Catch 22 whereby, for example, since there were very few opportunities for POC in Hollywood, very few POC tried to make it in Hollywood. All of that has been changing in a huge, wonderful way over the past few decades, however belatedly, but it does not mean that every classic tale rooted in white European or American culture needs to be recast with POC.
P.S. How anything I wrote translates to "woe is me" is only perceivable by your own warped logic

Nonsense. There are versions of the fairytale where skin color is not mentioned. Even the Grimm Bros tale doesn't explicitly say white SKIN--just white. It could mean purity. And in conclusion:
“Snow White,” in other words, may be the latest in a long, generally uninspired, and cumulatively numbing line of Disney remakes. But the sheer breadth of pre-release ill will it’s accumulated, across such a broad swath of the political spectrum, feels almost impressive. By the time the film finally arrived in theatres this week, it had sprouted almost as many controversies as dwarfs—and, of course, the issue of dwarfs predictably triggered one of the movie’s very first representational dustups. In 2022, the actor Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism, expressed his annoyance that Disney was “still making that fucking backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave.”
by Anonymous | reply 181 | March 27, 2025 11:27 PM |
R181 - Peter Dinklage did do a lot of damage - but how do you divorce dwarves from the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs story?
It's in the Grimm fairy tale - and they aren't evil - they are good!
7 dwarf actors could have had jobs - but noooooo. Peter Dinklage comes off as a pissed off dwarf with a chip on his shoulder 90% of the time.

People focus on the Free Palestine tweet but that wasn’t the real problem. The problem was everything else. And sure, Platt was being an asshole with his comment but that doesn’t matter. Rachel may have the entire internet on her side but the internet will not cast her on future jobs.
There is a time when you need to shut up and just take the money and keep quiet. We’ve all had terrible bosses or terrible coworkers. We’ve all been at a job that sucked and just had to suck it up. Rachel should have kept quiet.

by Anonymous | reply 185 | March 27, 2025 11:51 PM |
I haven't read all the responses but it seems to have caused a lot of controversy But the person to blame is Bob Iger. He runs the company and should have been checking in on what was going on with the movie. Every decision is ultimately his. It had to be filmed like 3 times and he kept oking everything. He had a star who couldn't keep her trap shut and the producer of the film had to fly out to see her? Iger couldn't pick up a phone? Disney is dying on the vine because of Iger. I'm not a Star Wars fan but everyone who is says he drove it into the ground. He spent 71 billion for Fox which has to be one of the great boondoggles of all time. Disney is a huge corporation but it keeps hemorrhaging billions because of this weatherman who is so enraptured with himself he just gave himself a $10 million raise and named the new Disney headquarters in Manhattan after himself.
Ironically the only thing this movie got good reviews for was Zegler's singing. People say everything else is terrible. And it all should be dumped on the head of this Ted Baxter wannabe.

R185, the Brothers Grimm wrote versions of folk tales which had circulated in Germany and neighboring countries for many generations. It's understood that their written versions were not word for word transcriptions of a particular version of a story. Instead their stories combined different versions and added new elements.
In any event, the core of Snow White isn't about how great it is to have white skin; it's about a mother (usually euphemistically described as a stepmother) who wants to kill her daughter because she is jealous of her. (And, in at least one version, she wants to eat her liver and lungs to make sure that she's dead).
It's classic fairytale horror material, but the story has been filmed many, many times. You'd have to bring something really good to the story, you can't just go through the motions.

R189 - that's like saying there were a lot of different versions of the Bible available so we need to discuss the unpublished chapters along with the canon we know today.
People don't know the other stories. They know a rough version of the Grimm story (which is much more gruesome) and the 1937 Disney film classic. Other 'versions' that people aren't aware of don't count in this discussion of the new Disney version of Snow White.
And yes, we're all aware that the color of her skin is not a plot point - but it IS why she's called Snow White.
Getting into a historical discussion about the fable's origins is really not germane to what we're talking about. And it's not going to be convincing or relevant to anyone, particularly Disney fans, who are enamored with the original.

What killed this movie is the avalanche of idiotic wokeness coming at it from every direction.
1. Zegler bad mouthing the values of the original story.
2. The writers making all kinds of changes to make the story more "relevant" and "relatable" in 2025, therefore killing it. Ex.: "Jonathan" instead of a prince.
3. The kerfuffle about the dwarfs, which was started by Peter Dinklage who was very vocal about a movie that featured dwarves as dwarves being an insult.
4. The dwarves initially being replaced with normal size POC, then changed again to animated characters.
5. And finally, Zegler acting like a complete idiot in repeated interviews standing for Palestine when her co-star is Israeli.

The movie From Justin to Kelly has a 1.9 rating on IMDB. Zegler’s Snow White has a 1.6. A movie starring two contestants from American Idol, non-actors, is considered a better movie than a Snow White movie starring Zegler. Disney executives need to let that sink in.

These constant reboots of classic fairytales just don’t work anymore--unless they’re dramatically reimagined.
Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Snow White... studios keep bringing them back, but audiences aren’t connecting the way they used to. It’s not because the characters aren’t beloved. It’s because the storytelling hasn’t evolved with the times.
Modern audiences want something fresh. Look at how Shakespeare keeps getting adapted! Set it in high school (10 Things I Hate About You), shoot it like a music video (Romeo + Juliet), reframe it entirely (She’s the Man). Those stories worked because they were reinterpreted, not just polished up and re-cast.
The same could be done for fairytales. Give me a version of Snow White set in the present day. Or a futuristic take where “Snow White” is a codename, not a descriptor. Just something that makes the world feel new again. Coincidentally, doing this would have eliminated multiple controversies relating to all of this.
Nostalgia alone isn’t enough to carry a reboot anymore. We need reinvention, not just repetition.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | March 29, 2025 1:00 AM |
R231 - Shakespeare were adult comedies and dramas with some universal conflicts and human characters.
Fairy tales have fantasy elements that you just can't update. Rumpelstiltskin? Goldilocks? Little Red Riding Hood? How the hell do you update these in modern terms?
That's the problem with trying to update Snow White - you rip out so much of the story you're left with a mess.
They did a great job with Maleficent without changing the story. I don't know how you can 'modernize' fairy tales.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | March 29, 2025 1:10 AM |
R232, I get where you’re coming from, and yeah, Shakespeare’s stuff does translate a little easier because it’s all messy humans doing messy human things. But fairy tales have that too; they’re just wrapped in fantasy and symbolism.
Rumpelstiltskin as a shady tech bro? Goldilocks as a story about privilege or gentrification? Red Riding Hood as a thriller? These things can work if you lean into what the stories are really about, not just the surface-level fairy tale stuff. (And Riding Hood has been changed around a couple of times already.)
And even with Maleficent, they changed a ton! It worked because they gave her a new POV and emotional arc, not because they stuck to the original exactly.
Modernizing fairy tales isn’t about slapping an iPhone into someone’s hand, it’s about remixing the themes to say something new. Fantasy doesn’t have to mean frozen in time.
I think the core theme of Snow White is about how external beauty can invite danger. The whole story is driven by the Queen’s envy, but it’s not just jealousy: it’s fear of being replaced, of losing power, of aging. Snow White’s beauty makes her a target, but it’s her kindness and innocence that ultimately help her survive.
That’s a theme that still hits today, especially in a world obsessed with appearance and comparison. You could absolutely update that in a modern setting.
My point is, if Rachel had of been silent, if the issue with the dwarves didn't happen, etc. I don't think this movie would have been a success.

R237, it’s all just fiction. In any event, countless songs over the centuries praise women for having fair skin and ruby red lips. It’s the most basic of compliments. Being very pale meant that you didn’t labor in the fields and therefore weren’t a peasant. Alabaster white skin has always been the beauty standard in Asia for the same reason. It has nothing to do with “race.”

And you don't know what family commitments this guy had going on - just because the children are older doesn't mean there aren't things going on - birthdays, high school events, sport events, family celebrations/anniversaries.
The fact that he had to take TWO 6 hour flights to address this in person, multiple times, IS a sacrifice. If you've ever flown cross-country and back in a short time window - it's exhausting with the 3 hour time change and basically taking a whole day (6 hr flight plus getting to airport, plus being there an hour before flight, then time getting out of airport).

Basically, if you’re not white, you get thrown into the same non-white category. There is nothing unique, specific or special about your race and ethnicity. You’re just “of color.” Like a box of crayons.
And it basically positions everything as “of color” vs. white. That’s certainly uplifting and brings people together 🙄.
This has always been the inevitable endgame of political correctness: no one is interesting, special or unique. Differences, no matter how interesting, rich or positive, should be ignored at all costs. Everyone is basically a carbon-based life form and nothing more.
It’s a horrible time for the world at the moment, but the death of “wokeism” is the only positive thing that’s happened.

Platt decided to remake Snow White. The animation is a charming story, a capsule of the early 20th century and a vital piece of cinematic art.
It’s also a work that little people have complained about for years and which contains the kind of un-consented kiss which hasn’t been spun into romantic for decades. Then he happily cast an inexperienced, brown, Gen Z self-proclaimed woke activist as the white-as-snow heroine. And for good measure an outspoken Israeli Zionist who can’t really act.
But yeah, the words “free Palestine” sunk it. All the red eye flights in the world don’t not make this failed project Platt’s fault.

It is. There are lights on either side of the board and they tick down. You have to wait until they go off before you click the button or else you'll be locked out for a half-second, which is long enough for another player to beat you to the punch.

R262 Exactly. Zegler tanked the promotion to the movie with her BS and not knowing when to STFU, but the movie itself is shit. The only thing Zegler did right is that she's apparently a decent singer. Gadot is pretty but can't act her way out of a paper bag. That said, at least she wasn't a stupid bitch like Zegler.

350 million? Why? CGI dwarves cost so much?
by Anonymous | reply 265 | March 30, 2025 2:09 PM |
I kinda liked Snow White and the Huntsmen because of Charlize Theron and her mirror. They didn’t have any dwarves in it.
When you reimagine things like all the examples upthread, it’s for young adults or adults, (my example, Mirror, Mirror, Snow White: A Tale of Terror et al) , it’s not for kids. When Disney tries to re-imagine, it’s solely for kids and family.
by Anonymous | reply 266 | March 30, 2025 2:27 PM |
So what were the “extensive reshoots” about? Did they initially shoot the scenes with the “diversity crew” in lieu of dwarfs (which had been Dinklaged) and then decided to go for CGI dwarfs?
by Anonymous | reply 267 | March 30, 2025 2:52 PM |
Sounds like Marc Platt(at least he was good as Dream Curly, I don't know why James Mitchell got the movie) and Iger are the villains here. Everybody is blaming Zegler because she is a self absorbed loud mouth but both those men with bad decision after bad decision produced a piece of garbage and it is totally on them. And is Gadot really a bad actor or did she have a traffic cop as a director? Don't they still have dialogue coaches on movies like in the days of the studio system?
by Anonymous | reply 268 | March 30, 2025 3:56 PM |
R268, you're probably joking, but just for the record, the Marc Platt who was "Dream Curly" in the original OKLAHOMA! (and also appears in the movie in another role, as well as in SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS) died in 2014.

She is as insufferable as most “theater kid makes it big” types are, including Papa Platt’s other son and the son’s best friend. That comes with the territory. But attacking her for a shallow political post shows just how insecure Platt and others are about their own political positions. Free speech, unless it is for Palestine.

Zegler is similar to Natalia Kills, the singer who along with her husband were fired from being judges on New Zealand X Factor. Natalia has had to change her professional name several times to try to disassociate herself from the infamous event that happened on the show. Zegler won’t have that route available to her since her highly unusual face is too recognizable and viciously attacking a beloved Disney classic created by Walt Disney himself is a far greater offense than speaking harshly to a contestant.

Who does he blame for letting that cunt Peter Dinklage talk them out of casting actual dwarves and using CGI nightmares instead? His dad seems like an easily pushed around moron, and it's not a good look to let his son trash Zegler like that online. Yes, she's an asshole too, I thought everyone knew that? Did she also rewrite the script making them all communists and her being the fairest in the land, referring to equitable acts and not looks? Speaking of, the fucking mirror thing doesn't even make sense now if the question is referring to inner beauty and a sense of justice. Everything about this movie is ridiculous and laughable, but Zegler is probably the best part. It just seems really misogynistic and it can't bode well for his own career. Shit like this is going to make people feel bad for Zegler, and that should never happen.

From The New Yorker, "The “Snow White” Controversy, Like Our Zeitgeist, Is Both Stupid and Sinister":
[quote] Placing the failure of “Snow White” largely at Zegler’s feet—as many insiders in Hollywood are evidently eager to do—is almost perversely flattering to her. The Walt Disney Company has a market cap of nearly a hundred and eighty billion dollars, and yet, in Variety’s telling, this international conglomerate could not “overcome the backlash that had been brewing like a fairy tale cauldron.” I am no box-office analyst, but, for what it’s worth, my kids are squarely in the “Snow White” demographic, and I don’t think they were lukewarm on going to see it because its star has insufficiently nuanced opinions about Prince Florian, President Trump, or the Israel-Hamas war. (An open letter from film journalists criticizing Variety’s coverage of Zegler has about a hundred and eighty signatures.)
[quote] The Platt anecdote and the framing of the Variety article in which it first appeared point to what is perhaps the most interesting aspect of the “Snow White” debacle: the film’s position in a larger narrative about which kinds of views on the Israel-Palestine conflict are acceptable in Hollywood—or anywhere in the U.S. circa 2025, really—and who is permitted to air them. The top Hollywood agent Maha Dakhil stepped away from her role as co-chief of C.A.A.’s motion-pictures department after she shared—and then deleted and profusely apologized for—an Instagram post that referred to Israel’s military attack on Gaza as “genocide.” The actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the “Scream” franchise for expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments online. In contrast, the actor Mark Ruffalo won his fourth Oscar nomination in 2024 despite vocal opposition on social media and elsewhere to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Ruffalo’s fellow-actor Guy Pearce, one of the most prominent pro-Palestine voices in the film world, earned his first Academy Award nomination this year and sat in the front row at the ceremony, where “No Other Land,” about the I.D.F.’s demolition of a Palestinian community in the West Bank, won the Oscar for documentary feature.
[quote] In other words, there would appear to be space in Hollywood to demonstrate sympathy for the more than fifty thousand human beings that Israeli military forces have killed in Gaza, as well as for the roughly twelve hundred human beings that Hamas killed in its October 7th terror attack on Israel. But you must be the right sort of person to demonstrate such sympathies, and you must use the correct terminology. One might speculate that Ruffalo and Pearce have more latitude than Dakhil and Barerra because they are both middle-aged white men. And yet, last year, after the director Jonathan Glazer won an Oscar for his astonishing Holocaust film, “The Zone of Interest,” an open letter circulated in Hollywood to condemn his acceptance speech as supporting a “blood libel,” attracting more than a thousand signatories (Jonah Platt among them). One Academy member likened Glazer’s measured words to a “Hamas rally.” Among Glazer’s offenses was in using the word “occupation” to refer to the occupied territories and invoking the “dehumanization” of both Israelis and Palestinians in the ongoing war.

R339 - Ben Platt is so easy to make fun of... for his lack of self-awareness (the Palace concerts, looking 39 and playing a high schooler etc.) but, you know what, good for him. That genuinely takes courage. To speak up in support of Palestinians when....
a). You work on Broadway, a very small, insular world that does not tolerate dissent from AIPAC talking points,
b). Your own (pretty powerful) father and your own brother have very publicly aired... less than nuanced views on the same topic.
c). You will undoubtedly have small-minded ultra right zios call you self-hating as they've done with other Jewish celebrities who have expressed sympathy for Palestinians, too. I'm actually impressed with the character he's shown.

The only redeeming things about this movie were the soundtrack and Rachel. All Disney needed to do to improve on the original was show more interactions between Snow White and the Queen. Had they left EVERYTHING else untouched this remake would’ve been decent.
As a result of all these changes this remake took a blowtorch to almost a century of cinema history without looking back. The only reason this film will be remembered is because it will be a history lesson for marketing classes in college.
