Prince Harry Dramatically Quits His Own Charity After Losing Boardroom Battle

Prince Harry has dramatically quit the charity he set up to help children affected by HIV in Botswana and Lesotho amid a poisonous battle for control within the organization.

The charity, Sentebale, has responded that it is “pleased” to confirm its board has been restructured and said it was now no longer focused on HIV-related issues but on “youth health, wealth and climate resilience in Southern Africa.”

According to a bombshell report in the London Times, Harry–who has raised millions for the charity he established in 2006–has been forced out, along with his co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho.

According to a bombshell report in the London Times, Harry–who has raised millions for the charity he established in 2006–has been forced out, along with his co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, after losing a bitter battle to get rid of the chair of the board of the charity, Sophie Chandauka, a Zimbabwe-born lawyer.

In a joint statement, which is yet to be officially released but was been obtained by The Times, Harry and his co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho wrote: “What’s transpired is unthinkable. We are in shock that we have to do this.”

They said: “Nearly 20 years ago, we founded Sentebale in honour of our mothers. Sentebale means ‘forget-me-not’ in Sesotho, the local language of Lesotho, and it’s what we’ve always promised for the young people we’ve served through this charity.

“Today is no different. With heavy hearts, we have resigned from our roles as patrons of the organization until further notice, in support of and solidarity with the board of trustees who have had to do the same. It is devastating that the relationship between the charity’s trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation.”

The Times said that a group of trustees had asked Chandauka to resign, and that she had retaliated by suing the trustees, who have now also quit.

The princes’ statement said: “These trustees acted in the best interest of the charity in asking the chair to step down, while keeping the wellbeing of staff in mind. In turn, she sued the charity to remain in this voluntary position, further underscoring the broken relationship. We thank all the trustees for their service over the years and are truly heartbroken they’ve had to follow through with this act.

This makes me very sad.

"There are people in this world who behave as though they are above the law and mistreat people, and then play the victim card and use the very press they disdain to harm people who have the courage to challenge their conduct," she said. This, she said, was the "story of a woman who dared to blow the whistle about issues of poor governance, weak executive management, abuse of power, bullying, harassment, misogyny, misogynoir [discrimination against black women] - and the coverup that ensued".

That's pretty damning.

On what basis would you say that, R4? Especially given her CV. The court upheld her position. I imagine she provided compelling evidence for them to rule in her favor.

by Anonymousreply 6March 26, 2025 10:57 AM

Most of those board members were friends of Harry. This woman was new. I bet they brought her for appearances' sake and thought she would tow the line out of gratitude. So many of these vanity charities are scams to funnel money and line pockets. They didn't count on her wanting to run a above-board operation.

by Anonymousreply 7March 26, 2025 11:03 AM

People who personally set up a charity and are particularly known for being extremely litigious don't just step down unless they know they've really fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 8March 26, 2025 11:05 AM

I am on Team Harry, this bitch sounds like she's to big for her knickers! The main goal was to help with HIV not other issues this bitch decided to take upon herself as more important. Whatever, they are going to be sorry when he no longer is going to be able to help them raise money.

by Anonymousreply 9March 26, 2025 11:39 AM

Bye Harold, happy to see the back of your useless husk. And your loser friends, too. BYE

by Anonymousreply 10March 26, 2025 12:27 PM

Please, R3. I loathe the useless fool but the woman's attack was taken from the Meghan/Blake/cunt playbook, except for the addition of "misogynoir."

It's Africa.

That means it is corrupt.

by Anonymousreply 11March 26, 2025 12:39 PM

So if I get this right the charity hired someone to oversee the day to day running, she claims to have found something concerning and raised the issue with the board at which point they voted to remove her, she applied to the high court to stop that, the court said OK we'll at least hear the case, crucially they've not made any actual decision on validity of claims and the entire board of trustees and the founders immediately quit on the supposed basis they couldn't afford to fight a legal battle that hasn't even started yet battle? The fuck did she find are they running blood diamonds or something?

by Anonymousreply 12March 26, 2025 12:46 PM

They're up to something.

Harry, like it or not, is a hugely famous draw to an obscure charity.

I bet the money has already been "diverted".

by Anonymousreply 13March 26, 2025 12:52 PM

No one in their right mind would give that charity a dime or have anything to do with the woman in charge. It and she are toast. Next.

by Anonymousreply 14March 26, 2025 12:55 PM

"With heavy hearts..."

Smegs always writes shit like that.

by Anonymousreply 15March 26, 2025 12:58 PM

Sentebale is the charity that was involved in child abuse scandals a couple years ago, right? How does that connect to this?

by Anonymousreply 16March 26, 2025 2:56 PM

There was some scandal with “African Parks” that is somehow connected to Sentebale? I didn’t follow it.

At any rate, pre-Megxit, I’ll bet there was a palace staff member tasked with keeping tabs on the charity to make sure it was kosher but since they left for the US, who had that responsibility?

by Anonymousreply 17March 26, 2025 3:32 PM

Haz put mostly white men into every position, and they all resigned too, temporarily of course. The earlier Sentebale scandal was the reveal that $84,000 out of $1.5million went to the children, and rumors swirled ever since. Dr. Chandauka has replaced Haz' bootlickers with mostly black women.

Africa Parks is a different corrupt NGO. Its rangers regularly rape and abuse women and children.

I certainly hope Meghan puts a handful of repackaged pretzels, delicately tied with a bow and heartening calligraphy, on "H's" pillow tonight!

by Anonymousreply 19March 26, 2025 5:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 21March 26, 2025 7:28 PM

Corruption? In Africa? In the nonprofit sector?

Well pass me the smelling salts.

by Anonymousreply 22March 26, 2025 8:05 PM

Dr. Sophie Chandauka isn't messing around. She gave an interview with Financial Times today, and will be appearing on Sky News tomorrow morning. In the FT she claimed that Harry insisted she release a PR statement praising Megz (which she flatly refused to do) and also wanted to leak PR puff pieces to make Harry look like a hero. Also, she accuses Harry of leaking negative stories about her (others involved with the charity) to the press. She insists that donations are down because large donors want nothing to do with the Sussexes fearing backlash as their brand is too toxic. Karma is great!

by Anonymousreply 23March 29, 2025 8:40 PM

That's pretty serious and the first time, to my knowledge, that anyone on a high level has publicly criticized the Sussexes, and it's the CoB of his beloved charity, no less. I'm sure she has receipts and Harry was too dumb to keep any on his end.

^I just remembered Bill Simmons of Spotify who called them grifters. That's criticism coming from four continents, including Australia. So many other people with buttoned lips.

by Anonymousreply 24March 29, 2025 8:51 PM

Maybe the charity head is just stirring the pot, but I'm here for it. Harry getting the same treatment he and his wife meted out to is great fun.

by Anonymousreply 25March 30, 2025 6:45 AM

[quote]Elsewhere, she argued various controversies around Prince Harry following his relocation to the US had affected the charity's ability to diversify its donor pool and hire people. "When you start to interview people, they're asking questions about, well, these mixed messages around the patron," she said.

[quote]She said she first felt tension between Prince Harry and herself a year ago. She also claimed the duke's team asked her to defend his wife Meghan from negative publicity. "I said no, we're not setting a precedent by which we become an extension of the Sussex PR machine," she said.

Every bit of the woman's story rings true.

Sophie Chandauka, the boss of Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale, fell out with Harry and Meghan Markle after she refused a request by the couple to tell the media that Markle hadn’t been “mean” to her at a charity polo match, the Daily Telegraph revealed Saturday.

Harry quit the charity in a blaze of recriminations this week.

The awkward encounter at a Sentebale polo match has been shared thousands of times on social media in recent days.

Damningly, it shows Markle telling Chandauka—the CEO of the charity and a globally respected lawyer who has worked in-house for Meta and JP Morgan, among others—to move away from Harry during photographs. Chandauka is then forced to duck under the trophy to the place of Markle’s choosing so that only Markle would be pictured by Harry’s side.

The Daily Telegraph on Saturday cited a “well-placed” but anonymous source as saying: “Ultimately, it comes down to that polo match and the awkward moment with Markle moving her out the way. Harry then demanded that she make a statement to the press, basically saying ‘Meghan wasn’t mean to me’, and she refused to do that.”

The account will do little to rehabilitate Markle’s image of being a nightmare boss.

It would be easy to dismiss the claims were it not for the fact that Chandauka gave an astonishing on-the-record interview to the Financial Times saying almost the same thing.

Chandauka took no prisoners in her FT interview, making it clear that she was glad Harry departed the organization: “The number one risk for this organization was the toxicity of its lead patron’s brand.”

She added that public sentiment around Prince Harry had been “volatile” since he moved to the United States and trashed his family in a series of films, interviews, and his memoir.

“When you start to interview people, they’re asking questions about, well, these mixed messages around the patron,” she said.

She also doubled down on claims of racism that she made in her initial statement, saying the board felt “a loss of power and control and influence ... ‘Oh my goodness, the Africans are taking over.‘”

Harry donated over $1.5 million from the sale of his book Spare to the charity. His team told the FT he had never sought to engineer its collapse.

Prince Harry accused of ‘harassment and bullying’ by charity chairwoman

The chairwoman of a charity co-founded by Prince Harry has accused him of “harassment and bullying at scale” in a TV interview Sunday, after he and others involved with the charity quit this week.

Sophie Chandauka, the chairwoman of Sentebale, said the Duke of Sussex unleashed “the Sussex (PR) machine” on her earlier this week when he publicly quit as a patron of the charity, along with co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, and the board of trustees.

I find it so hypocritical of Meghan to do this to Ms. Chandauka, since she claims to be:

1. So very "pro female" and all about empowering women, and

2. Proud of her black heritage.

Because here she is, treating a respected, professional black African woman like absolute shit.

by Anonymousreply 45March 30, 2025 8:02 PM

I wonder how this is going to be treated in Montecito. Will the normally litigious Sussexes sue Ms. Chandauk? A legal action means discovery: hand over your texts and emails and get ready to be deposed. Also, isn't it harder to prove slander in the U.K.?

Good point, r47. I wonder what kind of powers the UK Charity Commission has in their investigation. Are they just auditing Sentebale's filed paperwork or can they investigate board members who may have received money from the charity for whatever reason? They really shouldn't be getting any.

by Anonymousreply 55March 30, 2025 9:33 PM

Dr Chandauka, who was on Sentebale's board before becoming chair, accused Prince Harry of wanting "to force a failure and then come to the rescue".

But she told them: "The team is resolved that Sentebele will live on, with or without you."

In a separate interview with Sky News, Dr Chandauka was sharply critical of the way in which Prince Harry resigned.

She said the only reason she was speaking up is because the duke this week "authorised the release of a damaging piece of news to the outside world without informing me or my country directors, or my executive director".

"And can you imagine what that attack has done for me, on me and the 540 individuals in the Sentebale organisations and their family?" she said.

"That is an example of harassment and bullying at scale."

Prince Harry founded Sentebale in 2006. The charity has been hugely important to him and a massive part of his adult life.

So his decision to walk away from it, along with his co-founder Prince Seeiso, is hugely significant.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, the duke and Prince Seeiso said they were resigning from their roles with "heavy hearts" and in "solidarity with the board of trustees".

"It is devastating that the relationship between the charity's trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation," they said.

They said the trustees "acted in the best interest of the charity" by asking Dr Chandauka to step down, but her decision to take legal action to retain her position was "further underscoring the broken relationship".

They added they would be sharing their concerns with the Charity Commission "as to how this came about".

Dr Chandauka said she had "blown the whistle" about issues including what she described as abuse of power, bullying, sexism and racism.

She said her work at Sentebale had been "guided by the principles of fairness and equitable treatment for all", and that she had reported the trustees to the UK Charity Commission.

The charity itself has confirmed a "restructuring" of its board.

Former trustees Timothy Boucher, Mark Dyer, Audrey Kgosidintsi, Dr Kelello Lerotholi and Damian West described their decision as "nothing short of devastating" for all of them.

They said they had lost trust and confidence in the chairwoman but her legal action to block them from removing her meant they had no other option than to resign.

The Charity Commission has said it was "aware of concerns" over Sentebale's governance, adding: "We are assessing the issues to determine the appropriate regulatory steps."

Is Harry just stupid or is he mentally ill or both?

It sounds like it must have been a nightmare trying to run a serious charity when simple questions about the disappearance of donors couldn’t be addressed in case he was offended. Also, I wasn’t expecting that Harry was surrounded by yes men, but then, it makes sense that he would be, even in his degraded California life.

Her most convincing charges: her claim that fundraising became more and more difficult because of Harry's trajectory in the last few years; the cronyism of the leadership; the need for the charity to move on from its original remit and to become more locally led. The subtext about Meghan is good fun; I suspect the vastly better educated and experienced Dr. C is not impressed with Meghan's nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 76March 31, 2025 6:08 PM

In a revealing new interview, Dr. Chandauka reflected on a 2024 charity event where Meghan's appearance alongside Serena Williams caused a stir and led to logistical challenges on stage.

According to Dr. Chandauka, Meghan had initially confirmed she would not be attending the Royal Salute Paolo Challenge in Florida. However, she is said to have arrived unannounced with the tennis star, leading to last-minute disruptions.

During the event, Meghan allegedly made suggestions about the stage arrangement, twice requesting Dr. Chandauka to move away from Prince Harry's side. This led to an awkward reshuffling of attendees, with Dr. Chandauka having to reposition herself around the trophy.

Speaking to Sky News' Trevor Phillips, Dr. Chandauka noted that the unplanned appearance created coordination issues.

"We would have been really excited had we known ahead of time [Meghan was coming], but we didn't," she explained. "And so the choreography went badly on stage because we had too many people on stage."

The Duchess, 42, ordered people around the stage after handing Harry, 39, a trophy.

The event drew media scrutiny, with reports focusing on Meghan's presence and interactions on stage.

Dr. Chandauka also alleged that Harry's insistence on bringing a Netflix camera crew to a planned charity polo event in Miami ultimately led to its cancellation.

According to Chandauka, about a month before the event, Harry contacted the Sentebale team, expressing his desire to include footage from the event in his Netflix series.

"Prince Harry called the team and said, 'I'm doing a Netflix show, and I would love to bring a camera crew so that I can include some footage in this show," she recalled.

However, she argued that the decision was made without consulting key stakeholders.

"And so the team called me and told me, 'Oh, Prince Harry's made this request, so we're doing the thing. I said, you can't be doing the things without seeking consent from the property owners, the sponsors, all the guests. Nobody signed up to being on a Netflix show," Dr. Chandauka recalled.

She noted that negotiations with the venue quickly fell apart once the owners reclassified the event as a commercial endeavor.

"We come up with draft agreements and of course, the venue owner says this is now a commercial undertaking," she continued. "So here are my terms. We couldn't afford it. So now we lost the venue."

In a striking message to Harry, Dr. Chandauka reportedly asserted Sentebale's independence from him, stating: "The team is resolved that Sentebale will live on, with or without you."

The Duke of Sussex allegedly sent an “unpleasant” and “imperious” message to the head of an African charity he founded after she refused to issue a statement defending his wife, the Telegraph can reveal.

Prince Harry directly contacted Dr Sophie Chandauka, the chairman of Sentebale, following an awkward exchange she had with the Duchess of Sussex at a charity polo match in Miami last April.

He initially asked his team to contact the Zimbabwean-born lawyer and request she issue a statement quashing any rumours of tension between her and the Duchess.

However, after she refused to be drawn into the row, Prince Harry fired a direct message to her allegedly demanding that she “explain herself”.

According to sources, the note was “unpleasant” in tone and used “imperious” language that left the charity boss feeling taken aback.

The Telegraph understands that her refusal to comply with the request to back Meghan contributed to the bitter dispute that this week saw the Duke resign as head of the HIV children’s charity he co-founded almost two decades ago.

by Anonymousreply 81April 1, 2025 12:03 AM

If what is being reported is true, it's bad that Harry chose to resign from a charity for children with HIV rather than just accept Sophie Chandauka's refusal to bow to his wishes about the statement that Harry wanted.

If these tales are true, he keeps exposing the kind of person he (Harry) really is. Funny, though, since he complained that "The Palace" did not protect him and his wife when perhaps they were protecting his image from the reality of who Harry is.

Her reaction is disproportionate. So is her wig.

She doesn’t have the skills to run an organisation and manage people. Negotiating permissions for press and documentary ventures is par for the course in event management and relaying that back to relevant parties is basic negotiation.

by Anonymousreply 88April 1, 2025 2:39 AM

R83 The issues here are the fact that H&M, who try to paint themselves as anti-bullies and crusaders against racism and misogyny, are actually (if Dr. C is to be believed) racist, harassing, misogynists. Also the fact that Harry was trying to use the charity as just a PR exercise to the point her cared more about Netflix than the charity. And Dr. C is confirming that Harry is a toxic brand and donations are faltering with him as patron. I think the major thing that might come of this is that Invictus will use this fact as a reason to kick Harry to the curb eventually (as it is rumoured Invictus is having the same issues raising money).

by Anonymousreply 89April 1, 2025 2:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 92April 1, 2025 2:52 AM

Harry and Meghan need to work only with people who have signed NDAs and can’t run to the press over every single business dispute, unpleasant email exchange etc

Plus the woke charity world is too risky for them. The type of characters who work at “woke” charities are very ego centric and emotional and quick to get triggered and run to the press. Case in point

Once again Harry and Meghan are getting friends to fight their fights for them (remember the day when they said they wouldn't allow anyone else to speak for them). Harry's friend claims that Dr. C is jealous of Meghan (where have we heard that one before?). These two just (well, mostly Meghan) just can't keep their mouths shut. It's all so predictable now. Someone makes a complaint, then they have to respond usually either by friends or staff about how marvellous they are, how Meghan is so perfect and shit edible flower sprinkles everywhere.

The reality is, none of this would've happened if they stayed in the royal fold. The Palace would have covered or told Harry that Royal Patrons are meant to be token representatives who drum up fundraising but simply showing up.

So the good Dr wants to change Sentebale from an HIV/AIDS children’s charity to one focused on climate change.

Huh?

by Anonymousreply 104April 1, 2025 6:44 PM

Just to clarify Dr C want to make Sentebale a charity administer for Africa in Africa rather than one based in the UK with no locals actually on the ground. This would include an expansion beyond HIV/AIDS to African Children in Poverty (including those with HIV/AIDS). Basically she's trying to end the sort of white saviour aspect to the charity.

by Anonymousreply 105April 1, 2025 8:12 PM

Here's the thing, I'd be more suspicious of Dr. C-Whatever is she was new to the charity. But she was a member of the board for six years before becoming the Chair. She and Harry got along just fine until after Harry and Meghan left the royal family. Now I'm not saying she couldn't possibly be a hardass herself, but her revelations only confirm an ongoing pattern of H&Ms. Her revelations might seem petty to some, but they are idicative of a problem that both Harry and Meghan don't give a shit about the charities they represent, they just want PR (particularly Megz) e.g. Meghan only coming to an event because Netflix will be there.

This goes to a bigger problem with royals and charities. Harry and William were wrong to become too closely involved with their charities. The late Queen, Prince Philip and currently Princess Anne, have it right. They were happy to be a patron but left the actual running of things to the experts. Why, because if the shit hits the fan, their hands are clean. But we've seen it with Prince Charles' Trust that when a royal is too involved, it will bite them in the ass eventually.

R69 Really? I read this recently and it about sums it all up.

1. Harry hasn't visited there in the last 5 years. 2. Harry demanded $500,000 be paid to him to perform in Sentebale's polo fundraising. 3. Harry wanted the money they raised through that polo event for Sentebale...to be given to his and Megan's ARCHWELL charity, so THEY could give it to Sentebale, giving their failed ARCHWELL charity a bit of credit and validity... since they now do LITTLE with it. 4. As with Invictus... demanding to be paid to show up... he turned Sentebale into a prime grifter's moneymaking machine. 5. Harry bullied Dr. Sophie ...demanding she publically defend Meghan's reputation. 5. Dr. Sophie is a world-renound successful corporate lawyer and entrepreneur, with an impeccable reputation and credentials, who's been honored with a major award from the Queen for her service to the business world. 6. Harry, sadly, has ruined his reputation and everything he's touched since marrying Meghan.

Another Bombshell!

[bold]Meghan Markle’s Polo Snub Allegedly Caused Royal Ruckus[/bold]

[italic]In yet another episode of the long-running soap opera, “Meghan vs. The Commoners,” the Duchess of Sussex has found herself at the center of what the Daily Mail delicately describes as the “massive falling out” between Prince Harry and the CEO of his AIDS charity, Sophie Chandauka.

Harry quit the charity last week after Chandauka accused him of bullying and harassment “at scale.”

While much attention has focused on a video clip of Meghan Markle ordering Chandauka to move at a polo ceremony, the Daily Mail now reveals that Markle allegedly snubbed Chandauka on arrival at the match as well.

The Mail says that Markle RSVP’d “no” to the charity polo match only to turn up last-minute with a film crew, Serena Williams, and a notable lack of royal charm.

According to the Mail, Chandauka greeted Markle warmly, receiving what one source called a “perfunctory ‘hi’” in return before the Duchess vanished into a marquee to sip champagne with Williams.

Chandauka had hoped to introduce Markle to donors and guests but was reportedly rebuffed.

The Mail reports that staff were “scrambling” to find champagne for Markle, with both Sentebale and Archewell teams roped into bubbly-fetching duty. One source put it bluntly: “She went off to the tent. Sophie found it rude.”

Things went downhill from there faster than Markle’s approval rating. Markle later texted Chandauka—the content remains unknown—and the reply was icy enough to send Harry into a tailspin. One source told the Mail, “Above all else, it was the way she says Meghan snubbed her on arrival that was the reason she wouldn’t issue some kind of supporting statement.

“Meghan then sent something to Sophie, and Sophie responded, and, after that, she [Sophie] was persona non grata,” the source said. “Harry sided with Meghan—he always does as he is dazzled by her. In his eyes, she can do no wrong, even when it comes to behaving like that at a charity event. He was raging all day about it.

“Any time Meghan is spoken of badly, he gets the hump,” the source added.[/italic]

And the only female on the board, Miss Joan Crawford, looked him straight in the eye, and in a judgmental, drawn out tone uttered directly at him, said, "Quitter."

by Anonymousreply 145April 7, 2025 2:29 PM

Harry announced he was bringing his Netflix crew to the polo match without going through channels. The owners of the field said, well since this is not solely a charitable event anymore, the rental fee has gone up. Sentabale could not afford that so needed to find another field quickly. Through Harry’s connections, they found another field. Everything was rearranged to the new location. Meghan wasn’t coming and then at the last minute decided to come and she brought Serena Williams. Now Sentabale could’ve capitalized on that, fundraising, meeting donors, but they didn’t know in advance. Afterwards Sophie Chandauka gets criticized in board meetings for not being an effective fundraiser. The trophy presentation awkwardness is all anyone wants to talk about. Harry wants Chandauka to put out a statement that everything’s fine. Chandauka refuses saying she doesn’t want to get involved in Sussex drama.

by Anonymousreply 146April 8, 2025 4:19 PM

Megs and Serena stayed in a tent and had no interest in meeting donors

by Anonymousreply 147April 8, 2025 4:21 PM

I had a feeling when the story came out that at the core of this entire fiasco was another "What Meghan wants, Meghan gets" scenario. So now in sum Harry has lost his popularity, his family, a number of friends, his country, and now his charity. What's left to lose? Dignity is mostly out the window. Will Meghan scold him in public next?

by Anonymousreply 148April 8, 2025 5:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 162April 11, 2025 10:28 PM

Not BPC but I also think this was not completely out of line. Harry is still affiliated with Invictus and visiting wounded veterans is part of that. He was in Lviv which is pretty far from the front.
