Linda Cardellini IS Pamela Voorhees in Friday the 13th prequel, "Crystal Lake"

As freshly announced by Deadline, it appears that a deal has closed that will see Dead To Me vet Linda Cardellini playing one of horror’s most infamous mothers. Accompanying that news were these notes on how the character will be portrayed in Crystal Lake:

"Cardellini’s Pamela is believed to be a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child and takes a dark turn when she loses her son."

Crystal Lake will be centered around Linda Cardellini’s maternal figure, and the reign of terror she visits upon Camp Crystal Lake in the wake of her son’s wrongful death. So much like Bates Motel did for Psycho before it, the backstory before the real bloodletting is going to shape what we see.

[quote] Why Friday The 13th Fans Are About To Invoke “Aunt May” On This Casting

[quote] It’s been a little over three years since Spider-Man: No Way Home took out Aunt May Parker, and yet Marvel fans still debate Marisa Tomei’s casting as the classic Marvel Comics character. With a lot of spectators seeming to question whether an Aunt May can be “young and hot,” it’s a subject that stalks any message board like Jason Voorhees stalks his prey.

[quote] I fear that Crystal Lake is going to come under fire in the same way, as Linda Cardellini’s casting breaks the mold in the same sort of manner. You can practically hear keyboards firing up, ready to call out how the No Good Deed star’s looks are some sort of disqualifier for playing the more matronly looking Pamela Voorhees - with or without the machete in hand.

[quote] As far as I’m concerned, seeing the No Good Deed star cast in another morally complicated role is perfectly fitting. Not to mention if we’re really going to call out any cognitive dissonance here, it should be how a former Velma Dinkley will presumably slip on a mask of her own, in the name of dispatching some meddling kids at Camp Crystal Lake. Jinkies doesn’t even cut it.

[quote] I hope that more horror fans see Linda Cardellini as the new Pamela Voorhees for the win it truly is. Her multifaceted talents have brought her from genre to genre, running the gamut of morality throughout. Though we don’t know when Crystal Lake will premiere, it will assuredly be at a date that gives the internet plenty of time to debate. While healthy disagreements are fine and well, my fingers are crossed that the Aunt May-style discourse won’t be as long lived as what we’ve seen out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marisa was in her 50s when she played "Aunt May."

Linda is going to be 50 this year.

I don't see the problem with either of them playing these characters.

Linda could easily play Mrs. Voorhees.

Jesus Christ.

ANOTHER reboot?

by Anonymousreply 2March 25, 2025 6:58 PM

Yeah the only thing is, she should be wearing the iconic shepard's sweater and should have short, blonde, hair. But I love Linda so I'd watch. Quite the difference from her character's looks on the Netflix show with Ray Romano. They don't even look like the same person.

by Anonymousreply 3March 25, 2025 7:06 PM

At this point… any development in this series seeing the light of day is okay in my book!

I am not familiar with this actress at all but even if she seems younger I think it would work if she can act! The article implied the series will start years earlier, as a prequel.

by Anonymousreply 4March 25, 2025 7:07 PM

Oh, I'm an idiot, that picture is Marisa, not Linda. Okay, then she might be wearing the sweater and having short hair after all.

by Anonymousreply 5March 25, 2025 7:07 PM

R4 Linda has been in a lot of things. She was Velma in Scooby Doo, I think a lot of people know her for that? I didn't see it, but I was always mad that she was cast as the homely one and Sarah MIchelle Gellar was the hot one, Daphne.

by Anonymousreply 6March 25, 2025 7:09 PM

Are you kidding? How many movies are they going to squeeze out of this?

by Anonymousreply 7March 25, 2025 7:15 PM

Linda is actually getting better looking with age.

There was almost no kerfuffle when Tomei was cast. It was actually refreshing and one of the only good things about the latest Spider-Man reboot, which is pretty awful.

You really can just make up anything on the Internet/ social media and it immediately becomes true.

by Anonymousreply 9March 25, 2025 7:40 PM

Her former co-star Blake Lively could play the demented slasher.

by Anonymousreply 10March 25, 2025 8:08 PM

She IS the demented slasher, at least in the first movie.

by Anonymousreply 11March 25, 2025 8:20 PM

Will this series about a killer’s mother be as good as “Bates Motel”?

by Anonymousreply 12March 25, 2025 8:43 PM

In Friday the 13th, the mother IS the killer, R12.

So it's different.

R10, imagine the press if they’d cast Amber Heard.

by Anonymousreply 15March 25, 2025 9:04 PM

Is Linda Cardellini the best choice though?

When is this supposed to take place? Before Jason drowns? Or afterward?

Is this about how Mrs. Voorhees devolves into a deranged serial killer?

by Anonymousreply 16March 25, 2025 9:20 PM

The original Mrs. Voorhees in the 1980 version of Friday the 13th, was quite ugly.

I think that's why people are objecting to Linda Cardellini playing her.

[quote] When is this supposed to take place? Before Jason drowns? Or afterward?

I think it will start off after he drowns and showing Pamela grieving and then flash backing to when Jason was alive and then flashbacks showing the events that lead to his death.

I'm guessing the Christy family who owns the camp will have some focus as well.

by Anonymousreply 18March 25, 2025 10:16 PM

R17, Betsy Palmer was once James Dean’s leading lady. She wasn’t that ugly.

by Anonymousreply 19March 25, 2025 10:46 PM

R19 I have seen pictures of her when she was younger. She wasn't extremely beautiful, but I don't think she was ugly either.

by Anonymousreply 20March 29, 2025 7:41 PM

Her casting guarantees that I'll watch.

by Anonymousreply 21March 29, 2025 8:54 PM

^^^I agree. She shines in everything she does. Her chemistry with Christina Applegate in Dead To Me was amazing. She really moved me with her performances in Brokeback Mountain and The Green Book and was hysterical as the permed daughter who kills her father in Legally Blonde. She reminds me of Jane Fonda except she's been kinda flying under the radar for a while now.

by Anonymousreply 22March 29, 2025 9:08 PM

OMG I didn't realize she was the actress who played Cassie!

I loved her character in that movie.

I loved her as Velma in the Scooby-Doo movies.

"Girls don't fall in love with fun Ennis."

by Anonymousreply 25March 29, 2025 9:23 PM

I remember her from Freaks & Geeks.

by Anonymousreply 26March 29, 2025 10:21 PM

Finally, a series where Pamela Voorhees gets the spotlight and the shine she deserves! She was the original killer, and she was unjustly upstaged by her son Jason.

If this had been made 15 years ago, wouldn’t Jessica Lange have been perfect as Mrs. Voorhees?

by Anonymousreply 27March 31, 2025 5:23 AM

I'm hoping this series works out. The Friday the 13th franchise is one of my favorites, even though I know most of it is crap. Since this is a prequel series, it will probably focus on Pamela's days at Camp Crystal Lake, Jason's drowning and Pamela going crazy. Maybe we'll finally get the long-awaited expansion on Jason's dad, Elias Voorhees.

This is from May 27th…

I love Linda so I am excited for this-- It better be gory and not PG-13 level.

I predict a critical and audience mixed-bag but not a disaster-

by Anonymousreply 30June 6, 2025 4:42 PM

[quote] Cardellini’s Pamela is believed to be a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child.

I was born to play this role! 🎶 There's a new girl in town 🎶

by Anonymousreply 31June 6, 2025 4:42 PM

I’m such a fan of the franchise that even if this is tepid and lame… I’ll take it. I’m just glad it picked back up again.

Very curious!

by Anonymousreply 32June 6, 2025 4:57 PM

So I assume this will start very early and we’ll see Jason as a young boy, pre-drowning.

Or even his birth, and the ensuing drama when they discover the baby is the “R” word.

The page that image is from contains this interesting info:

The series is set before the events of the first Friday the 13th film, implying it will be apart of the original timeline (including Alice Hardy being a character) as opposed to the 2009 remake or its own timeline, this could change and likely become the latter but the audience won't know till more information comes out. This means the timeline will be set in 1956 before Jason's death, how Alice Hardy is alive in this time is unknown (she was born three years later), this could be evidence it takes place in the Remake or its own timeline. It could also be a flash-forward in time to explain Alice Hardy's involvement.

This could be good. Or it could be a total misfire. But it's not like the franchise is the gold standard of cinema.

by Anonymousreply 36June 6, 2025 7:06 PM

I just hope this isn't loaded with filler storylines like Bates Motel. 5 fucking seasons of drug dealers and the girl with the oxygen tank. Nobody gave a shit-we wanted to see how Norman and Mother became so twisted.

by Anonymousreply 37June 6, 2025 7:10 PM

I hope next we get a character study on Dr. Loomis becoming a psychiatrist.

by Anonymousreply 38June 6, 2025 8:28 PM

^That's Halloween

by Anonymousreply 39June 6, 2025 8:42 PM

R33 And by the “R” word we assume you mean “not a veRy good swimmeR.”

by Anonymousreply 40June 6, 2025 9:47 PM

No shit, R39. I was joking about unnecessary premises.
