Unemployed Gen Z Influencer Will Primary Old Bat in Her "Really Cool" District

Kat Abughazaleh, a TikTok influencer known for her comedy sketches mocking Fox News, moved to Illinois last year and now seems intent on primarying longtime North Shore Democrat Jan Schakowsky, 80, in 2026.

She has no ties to the district, and didn't even vote there in the last election, but she swears she can be a breath of fresh air for the district, which she describes as "really, really, really cool." Yes, she used the word three times. Her main argument is that Jan has been around for nearly three decades, and it's time for fresh leadership. Jan may retire this term, and a stack of Illinois Democrats (mayors, state senators, and Beth Jarrett) are likely to run in the primary if she does.

Sounds like something a Turkish person would say after they sneeze.

All just for clicks and likes.

Beth Jarrett would never BE a Democrat!

This brat will probably lose in the primary.

Good for her. I wish more young people would enter politics as upstart candidates especially if they are blatantly ignoring the wishes of the status quo. The corporate/wealthy donors have a stranglehold on both parties, which is responsible for the dwindling effectiveness of the old guard status quo. So, good on her for trying to get the old bat out. Even if the young upstart loses, at least she's trying a different approach, and maybe that will motivate others.

Jan's fine - but this gerrymandered district is jaw-dropping. It's ridiculous to think that I have much in common with her constituents out in Algonquin from here in lakefront Uptown.

Lake in the Hills? Lakeview? Same thing! /s

Jan Schakowsky has already announced that she's not running for reelection. It's an open primary.
