Hackneyed Expressions

Inspired by the thread with the linked article "Ione Skye Opens Up About Her Relationship..." Opens up? What the fuck? Why is this so overused now? Every minor thing, some demi-celebrity is 'opening up'. "Reveals" is another one that makes me roll my eyes? What else?

by Anonymousreply 30March 23, 2025 3:45 AM

How would Miss OP re-write that sentence without hackneyed expressions?

by Anonymousreply 1March 21, 2025 9:38 PM

That's eady. Slut Ione Sky Breaks Her Silence About Her Relationship

by Anonymousreply 2March 21, 2025 9:49 PM

Currently I dislike very much the following expressions:

everything is "amazing" - really? are you that dim

having "teachable moment" - what? you learned something

let's "connect" - call me / text me

I'm "triggered" - I need a backbone and a dose of reality.

People seem to “call each other out” a lot these days. In the past if I’d read that, I’d have imagined that Movie Star A had invited Movie Star B to go out back to the alley where they could settle a thing like men, but what it seems to mean now is that somebody has become offended or has had their feathers ruffled somehow and that their publicist has leapt into action to let the world know.

Reach out and touch someone.

You can't reach out with a phone and touch someone, idiotic copywriter!

Dumb AT&T for approving the spot instead of firing their agency.

by Anonymousreply 8March 21, 2025 11:20 PM

Meghan Markle claps back at haters.

by Anonymousreply 9March 21, 2025 11:26 PM

This topic is hackneyed.

by Anonymousreply 10March 21, 2025 11:34 PM

Tell me you’re (anything) without telling me you’re (anything) Makes me want to shoot someone in the face.

by Anonymousreply 11March 21, 2025 11:36 PM

"No Problem"

by Anonymousreply 12March 21, 2025 11:37 PM

"So good you'll slap yo mama!"

by Anonymousreply 13March 21, 2025 11:49 PM

A few years ago, every article about life hacks or movie trivia would reveal something “mind blowing”.

by Anonymousreply 14March 22, 2025 12:00 AM

How about this? You're in line to pay at some place, and you hear them yelling "Following". Not 'followed' (see what I did there?) by "guest", "customer", or even "shoe lover'. Just "FOLLOWING!" WTF? I fucking HATE THAT.

R8 missed the lecture in 8th grade on metaphor and simile.

by Anonymousreply 16March 22, 2025 2:31 AM

No, r16, you did not perceive the lazy copywriter stole the idea from an old Diana Ross song. Derivitive at best.

Were I the brand manager for AT&T longlines business segment, I would have shut that concept down with a “what else do you have to pitch today?”

Yes—if you were there. You weren’t, for what was a successful ad campaign.

To steal from a song: Hit the road, Jack.

by Anonymousreply 18March 22, 2025 2:50 AM

“Doubling down on…”

“To be clear…”

“Gaslighted by…”

“Tell me you’re [fill in with rant-du-jour] without telling me you’re [ibid].”

by Anonymousreply 19March 22, 2025 3:21 AM

I cannot stand when people describe any random thing, especially a food item as a "bad boy". ""Yeah, serve up these bad boys and the crowd will go nuts!" And the "bad boys" in question are....chili dogs!

Drives me bonkers!

by Anonymousreply 20March 22, 2025 4:07 AM

“Holding space”

“Give her her flowers”

by Anonymousreply 21March 22, 2025 4:13 AM

“Bonkers”

by Anonymousreply 22March 22, 2025 10:36 AM

Mama OP , sounds like you need to touch some grass or have a little snack. Why are you so pressed that the girls are girling? These writers are just leaning into the chaos and getting their life.

Also “breaking one’s silence” is a pretty trite figure of speech too.

by Anonymousreply 23March 22, 2025 11:08 AM

*checks notes*

by Anonymousreply 24March 22, 2025 11:41 AM

“What the fuck”

by Anonymousreply 25March 22, 2025 12:01 PM

OP, we need to have a conversation about hackneyed expressions.

by Anonymousreply 26March 22, 2025 12:39 PM

Every pregnant woman is "showing off her baby bump" just by being out in public.

by Anonymousreply 27March 22, 2025 7:06 PM

Mafuckin!’ I wuz razed rite.

by Anonymousreply 28March 22, 2025 7:20 PM

It's giving...

It's giving hackneyed.

by Anonymousreply 29March 22, 2025 7:27 PM

"Happy camper"!

Stop, please.
