Conor McGregor announces run for Irish presidency on anti-immigration platform
Conor McGregor will run for the Irish presidency in elections later this year, the controversial former fighter said on Thursday, as he announced his candidacy for the largely ceremonial role on an anti-immigration stance.
McGregor, who in recent years has emerged as a figurehead for the far-right in Ireland, said on social media that he would run for president to oppose a long-awaited new European Union migration pact aimed at sharing the burden of processing asylum claims more evenly across the bloc.
“Who else will stand up to Government and oppose this bill?” he said in an Instagram post to his more than 46 million followers. “Any other Presidential candidate they attempt to put forward will be of no resistance to them. I will!”

The post comes just days after McGregor, 36, appeared at the White House with Donald Trump on St. Patrick’s Day, where he became the latest European ally of the US president to promote anti-immigrant sentiment – drawing controversy and censure back home.
“Ireland is at the cusp of potentially losing its Irishness,” McGregor said Monday, claiming the government had “abandoned the voices” of Irish people and that rural towns were being overrun by immigrants.

It’s a ceremonial role. He’s been accused of sexual assault multiple times. However, it’s a real issue and he claims he’ll ask for a referendum on immigration. Again, failure to deal with the problem could lead to a right wing leader in an unlikely place.

There's a lot of rage in Ireland towards the government for it's feckless incompetence. The kind of incompetence that allowed in a Gyanese man who raped and imprisoned a girl after a few days in the country. And the government will lie brazenly and say there's nothing wrong when something involving an immigrant seems to happen everyday. Our country is at the edge of the abyss with abominable housing prices and free for all illegal and legal immigration. McGregor is a rapist yes but he's also possibly the only high profile Irish presence expressing the forbidden thoughts of the populace. He also comes from working-class Crumlin, for Americans that would be a ghetto. We shall see what happens.

R4, the President of the Republic of Ireland is an apolitical ceremonial role that doesn't have many political powers and certainly not over migration policy. It's rarely filled by politicians although most presidents are distinguished in other areas.

The EU migration pact actually strengthens checks and monitoring of migrants and asylum seekers. The Guyanese man r7 mentions didn't enter Ireland under the migration pact or even under any EU rules. He was not even a migrant but a holiday maker who entered Ireland for a few days from the UK. Not implementing the EU migration pact would have had no impact on whether this convicted rapist could enter Ireland or not as he entered Ireland from the UK thanks to the common travel area which Ireland has with the UK and which lies outside of EU law. Is McGregor suggesting ending the common travel area with the UK too?

Which "truth to power" is McGregor willing to speak, r17? He's not saying anything beyond regurgitating a few garbled tropes. How would he perform his main roles of being a unifying figure for the people of Ireland, representing Ireland to the world and protecting the Irish constitution, especially when he's proposing to undermine it by intervening in government policy?

It's already heavily politicised r10 by a man who used a Holocaust memorial speech to speak about Palestine. Higgins does not give a fuck about temperance or holding in his opinion when he acts like the nation's loveable crotchety grandpa and his fans enjoy that because they agree with his politics, but if McGregor wins nobody can say that precident wasn't already broken. Maybe he should win if the platform is based on who's more entertaining or outrageous. Higgins can tell people that was his legacy for Ireland. I'll tell you who I voted for if any of this actually happens.
The thread's a bit short r15 but the act determines migrant intake by GDP which for Ireland is a problem because among other dubious factors high rent drives up GDP, so you can imagine the implications. Ireland didn't need it, we could have just adopted the migrant policy of a country with a functioning government.

The biggest mistake of the EU was to allow citizens to move and work within the EU relatively easily. That's really the issue why the UK left. They had projections of a certain amount of immigrants and ended up getting 5-8x as many.
Having a common currency is one thing - and the trade. But the movement of citizens and ability to work in all of these different countries is not a good idea. It makes the poor countries poorer with the brain drain.
And yes - people WANT to keep their cultural identity. What's wrong with that? Thousands of years of shared traditions, language, food, etc. - people are still tribal - particularly in Europe where you have such a distinct mix of languages and cultures so close together.
He won't win - but politicians need to start listening to people about immigration concerns.

R31 - obviously that is true, except 2 things - Ireland didn't have any colonies, it was a colony of Britain and misused/abused for centuries.
Second - European colonies undoubtedly took resources and raw materials from other countries. But - they also brought in a lot of technology and advancements as well. They came in with money to invest in the country. Yes - the profits of which were taken out of the country - we know that.
That's different than having people show up to live without money or education at your doorstep and you're now on tab for providing healthcare, education and housing for them.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 21, 2025 4:24 PM

R36 - how does "The EU in fact protects the various national heritages."?
The ability to freely travel is one thing - but the ability to work in any country seems short-sighted and, as we've seen, shows a flow of younger people and immigrants from less developed countries to more developed countries.
That's not going to raise up the 2nd or 3rd tier countries with the brain drain. Secondly, it makes the middle and working classes of the more developed countries bitter about having to compete against people who will work for less.
The whole 'immigration is great for the economy' is a lie if the benefits of the economy is tilted toward the upper 1-5% - and that's what has been happening the past 20 years. If everyone was benefiting from the economy, it may be true - but that's not the case.
People are rightfully upset.

No one is upset about freedom of movement, aka the right to live and work in other EU countries, r39. No EU member state wants to change that, neither the countries of net outflows nor the countries of net inflows. It's not accurate to say there's a significant brain drain either. Any outward migration would have been far greater without EU membership to bolster the local economy.
That isn't even what McGregor is on about.

R49 - but you can't draw the same parallels of immigration from 19th and early 20th century to today. The US needed more people with the expansion in all the states - it was a new country. The racisim against Irish was a hold over from the English that was adopted here - a long with a healthy dose of anti-Catholicism.
To be certain, there is a need for IT and healthcare workers.
But that's not what I believe Conor is talking about. Look I don't support this rapey motherfucker anymore than the next guy - but all Western countries need to get a grip on immigration or it will be continued to be a wedge issue in elections.
You can't just call anyone with concerns xenophobic or racist. There are genuine concerns - particularly when middle and working class are struggling and the housing market is out of control and they aren't building enough housing.
When middle and working class people are stressed about housing and food, then best believe they don't want more coming in.

That's the point all of these virtue-signaling assholes who can only scream "racist!" and make whataboutism comparisons always miss. Back in the late 19th century during the huge wave of immigration during the Ellis Island period, the US was in full swing with industrialization, there weren't enough people to fill all the factories, build the railroads etc. Also, the Civil War killed 700,000 young American men. The loss of life was staggering. There was a critical shortage of young able-bodied men who could work in jobs that were desperate to have them. It was a VERY different time.

R63 - yes - and after WW2, European countries needed male workers to immigrate as well.
Look - the point is - Millennials and Gen Z and a lot of even Gen X and Boomer Americans have felt left behind. The Gen Z and Millennials are almost resigned themselves to doom and a not so great life. We have highest percent of people 18-30 still living with their parents since the Depression.
People are resentful of ALL immigrants when it seems the gvt cares more about them than they do their own citizens. It's hard not to feel that way. When are THEIR opportunities going to become available? How come THEY can't get the training needed for all of these IT and healthcare jobs?
When people are struggling themselves how do you expect them to support bringing more people in? I don't give a fuck if they have a PhD - let them get a job in their own country.
How much does it cost to bring in immigrants and provide them with social benefits - why don't we use that to train our own people for better jobs?
It's one thing to have immigration when there's such a labour shortage - but when people can't find jobs nowadays, or anything that pays well, and prices have gone up - why the hell should more come in?

I’m branded MAGA on this board as an American because I am pro-American any sense of dignity and pride I have is basically considered alt right / MAGA / pro-Trump. You can’t be pro-gay, pro-multi-culture, pro-women, you have to hate the US and be pro-everyone else in order to be seen as liberal today. Burning the American flag and wanting to leave is liberal today.
I don’t know how drastic it is in Ireland today with liberalism but I’m wondering if it’s as toxic as the US’s left wing liberalism.
Cause in the US, Trump won, Democratic favorably is at all time low since 1999 and people are sick of the looney liberal. And the US is still generally liberal but what is considered moderate today is true blue liberalism and not the anti-American liberalism you see on DL or Twitter.

The posters here blindly foaming at the mouth over immigrants are - not surprisingly - completely overlooking the specific issue that McGregor has a problem with, namely Ireland's decision to participate in the EU migration pact.
First of all, the president of Ireland cannot call a referendum. Second, the EU migration pact is a control on migration and involves the strict processing and even repatriation of potential migrants and asylum seekers. Third, the majority of the elected Irish parliament voted to join the EU migration pact. Sinn Fein voted against it. Perhaps McGregor should support Sinn Fein in the next parliamentary elections, because the things he says he wants to see happen or be prevented are outside the powers of the president.

Good bye Irish culture! Goodbye Irish potatoes!
Actually! Potatoes are NOT native Ireland! They are an AMERICAS native food. Make Ireland great again! Get your own cultural food! Stop pilfering the Mexican potato!
Yes, it's true that potatoes are not native to Ireland. They originated in the Andes Mountains of South America, mainly in what is now Peru and Bolivia, and were domesticated by Indigenous peoples thousands of years ago. Spanish explorers brought potatoes to Europe in the late 1500s, and they eventually became a staple crop in Ireland due to their high yield and nutritional value.
The Irish Potato Famine (1845–1852) was caused by Phytophthora infestans, a fungal-like pathogen that led to potato blight, destroying crops and causing mass starvation. The problem was that Ireland relied almost entirely on a single variety of potato, the "Irish Lumper," which had little genetic diversity and was highly susceptible to disease.
While Mexico does have a rich history of agriculture and biodiversity, the specific Andean varieties that first came to Europe were already limited in genetic diversity. If a more diverse selection of potatoes had been introduced, particularly ones that co-evolved with blight-resistant traits (such as those found in South America), Ireland might have fared better.

[quote] Garron’s statement was completely harmless. I have followed him on Instagram -he is very funny and not political. . I guess this is what JD Vance was talking about regarding free speech in Europe. .
I guess you are who they are talking about when they say people who listen to J D Vance are morons. No one’s free speech was violated.
Noone was completely free under Irish law to say what he said. Hundreds and thousands of people, in turn, have spoken without limitation in defence of him. There has been absolutely no infringement of free speech.
Noone himself temporarily chose to withdraw from social media because of the response of members of the general public to what he said. He did so because of his commercial interests or his unwillingness to deal with the honest responses of members the public that he invited by making his statements.
His statement was generally anodyne, but there was one key statement that was not. He said crime was not simply an immigration issue. If you don’t understand why that is offensive, change the statement to “crime is not just a catholic issue” or “crime is not just a gay issue.”
If he has solid evidence immigration increases crime, he should be encouraged to say that. But that is not what he did. It is also perfectly permissible to oppose immigration purely on principle. But he also did not make that statement. Instead, he chose to blame a group of people on a claim for which he has no evidence. The fact that the government doesn’t prevent people from criticising him when he makes unfounded criticisms of a group of people is not a sign Ireland no longer respects free speech. Quite the opposite.

I'm new here and pondering the complaint of the poster who wrote that celebrating cultures is fine except if you're white.
I like to celebrate my whiteness with white foods, and I mean the color. Lot's of mayonnaise, whipped cream, white wine and cheese. Sometimes it's hard to know what your white culture is when one of your parents is from Finland, the other England. Now they are both pretty white countries so I figure I can eat Karjalanpiirakka and call french fries 'chips' and potato chips 'crisps'.
The puzzle is how I tease out these immigrant cultures and figure out my own white culture. That brings me right back to the white foods. I guess I could add assassinating presidents, shrieking about American exceptionalism, and meth, lots of meth.
