Former sprinter and DL fave Markus Poyhonen running for mayor of Helsinki
Translation of his Instagram post below.
For years I have been following and thinking about how I could influence common issues. I have been interested in politics for a long time, but now I feel ready to take part in decision-making myself. That is why I am running for mayor in the Helsinki municipal elections. If the issues below are close to your heart, remember to get out and vote from 2 to 8 April during the early voting period or on election day 13 April at the latest. And the right number is 312!
✅ A mobile Helsinki, a healthy Helsinki!
- Let's develop an urban environment that inspires exercise.
- Let's ensure the sustainable development and maintenance of Helsinki's sports venues, services and routes - now and in the future.
✅ Entrepreneur-friendly Helsinki - opportunities, no bureaucracy
- Small entrepreneurs create jobs and vitality. Helsinki should be supported, not hindered. Less regulation, more opportunities to succeed.
✅ Smooth traffic – Helsinki that doesn't stop
- Better traffic policy: less congestion, more smooth traffic. Private cars, public transport and pedestrian routes can work together – without confrontation.

Unfortunately he seems to be a supporter of cars in already congested city centers. Hell-sinki on earth!
[quote] You would suddenly think that a former athlete would be in favor of car-free living. No one needs their own car inside the 1st ring! People move too little in their everyday lives and even short distances are traveled by car for no reason.
[quote] Enabling mobility in Helsinki is important because many small entrepreneurs and employees need a car to do their work and transport goods. In addition, for those coming from further afield, private car travel is often the only viable option. A vibrant city centre needs smooth movement by all modes of transport, including cars.
[quote] I need a car constantly for my work, because without it I would not be able to move efficiently and widely in Helsinki. My work requires flexible movement between different destinations and events, and that would not be possible without a car.

He's still quite lovely. But what experience and qualification does being a former track & field athlete have to do with being the mayor of Finland's capital city?

Well he is a politician; he "clarifies" his position on public transport:
[quote] The purpose of this video is to highlight the challenges of driving in Helsinki, but in no way underestimate the importance of public transport or light traffic in terms of the functionality of a city. I will get back to this in my posts too.

There was a now-removed video of his "bouncing bulge" on Youtube that featured him running a race. That was the source of his original popularity here. I think that may have been in the mid to late 2000s. I'll see if I can find it.

He needs an age-appropriate haircut that would match better with his more solid physique.
He’s lost the ethereal beauty of his youth, but he’s managed to stay hot as fuck by getting meaty and thick.

R30, Yellow Skin Troll used to obsess over pictures where it looked like European guys had yellow skin. It was funny because it was obviously just a weird photo tone, but YST would divert every topic back to the guy’s skintone, in a respectful, but extra lustful and humorous (at least back then) way. I think YST posted a picture of this guy kneeling before doing some track and field event. It was a perfectly fine picture to lust after for all the usual reasons; YST was just silly icing on the cake.

He got 386 votes. The number of votes in the Helskinki 2025 municipal elections was 339,515. From Markus on Instagram:
[quote] A big thank you to all voters and supporters!
[quote] The timing of the municipal election campaign was not exactly optimal for me. Immediately after registering, I had to say goodbye to my beloved dog, and at the same time, working life demanded my full commitment as a small entrepreneur. Unfortunately, I didn’t have as much time for campaigning as I would have liked.
[quote] Despite this, the experience was truly educational and educational. I strongly believe that next time we will go in a completely different direction and with an even stronger grip.
[quote] Thank you again to everyone who supported, voted or encouraged me along the way. I appreciate you very much.
