This looks so… cold.

She looks so much like Anjelica Huston there.

This looks bad. And I'm sorry, I just can't buy Pedro Pascal as a heterosexual male lead.

Didn’t Chris Evans play this role with some regularity before he broke out with Captain America?

I liked Past Lives, so I might give this a chance if it gets good reviews. But it has a Something's Gotta Give vibe (woman is single but suddenly must choose between two men). And isn't Pedro (gay) a bit old to be with Dakota? I just don't get any chemistry with these leads.

Dakots Johnson is s horrible actor

Some early reviews, I think variety, mention a bisexual vibe

Did you notice Material Girl is the background music for the trailer?

Been reading sme early takes from regular folk over on Reddit who have already seen it. Two main things that apparently bring the movie down are that Evans is miscast (i.e. unbelievable in the working class role he's supposed to be playing) and that Dakota's acting leaves a lot to be desired.

Saw it today and quite liked it. An adult, wised-up, clear-eyed rom-com which understands the need for compromise when people in their 30s and 40s are looking to settle down, but also insists on the primacy of love. It’s a ‘realistic,’ prickly but consistently entertaining movie,
There is a slightly too serious subplot about a blind date gone wrong, and the film is a bit long but it’s good. Dakota Johnson is terrific, always believable and has her own kind of glamor, Chris Evans is sexier than he has been in ages, though he could have smiled more, and Pedro Pascal is completely convincing as a straight ‘unicorn,’ the seemingly perfect guy every single woman in her 30s would want (so take note, R2). His plot line contains a major contrivance but that’s not his fault, he’s relaxed and easy as a single rich guy of a certain age.

As soon as I saw Dakota was a smoker I would have walked away.

Oh I get it. The Materialist. Material Girl.

Sounds as contrived as Past Lives. Hard pass.

It doesn't matter what Celine Song does. She's the epitome of a "critic's darling."

Dakota should have opened singing "Just Leave Everything to Me".

It is “contrived,” but so are all movies, including documentaries.
And actually all the characters are “Materialists” — it means that it’s hard for love to survive when you have no money and still find yourself struggling financially in your mid-30s. Money as well as romance becomes a necessary calculation when looking for a partner once you’re out of your 20s. It’s set in NYC and is very honest about that.

Sounds like critics like it more than audiences.

It seems like reviewers want to like this because they were on board with misplaced praise for Past Lives two years ago. Every reviewer goes on about how much they loved Past Lives and ultimately this film doesn’t really work, the actors have no chemistry, the situations are contrived, the dialogue is too on the nose, jarring shift in tone (there’s a sexual abuse subplot that informs the main plot even though the film has no plot) but it’s Celina Song so it’s okay.
So like Chazelle and Aster before her, it’ll be Celine Song’s third film that finally has critics acknowledging that, actually, she just isn’t very good.
