There was a period in the early 2000s where Courtney Love was smoking crack and claiming that a large portion of Kurt's fortune had been embezzled. I remember her claiming that she had no money at that time and was living in a small LA apartment with Frances. I don't know how true that is, but she hit the skids hard after getting carted off to Bellevue on suicide watch a short while later and landing herself in a series of legal problems that ended with her in court-ordered lockdown rehab. Given that it's Courtney Love, no one was surprised, but still.... she went off the rails in a way that was worse than the norm for her.

[quote]How does it happen? Don't they have friends, family?
People with untreated mental illness and/or addictions are often estranged from both friends and family. Sometimes they can't or won't admit that they need help and decide that they are better off on their own. Or they are simply ashamed and cut themselves off from everyone they know. There isn't much that families can do in such circumstances.
Also some people are unfortunate enough to lack any supportive family members at all. There simply isn't anyone in their life who can help them.

R13 She doesn’t count because she was on drugs, not down and out compared to the others listed in this thread. She’s comparable to Britney, Whitney, and Justin Bieber.
I do believe her ex-boyfriend and people around her were stealing while she was drugged out but she basically owned all of Nirvana’s publishing during that time. She was definitely not broke.
She might have less money now because she’s sold parts of it off.

R13 In the early 2000s, when Neil Strauss was doing research for what would ultimately become his book “The Game,” he writes about how Courtney Love came and crashed (at his invitation) at the mansion the he and several other seduction artists were renting in Beverly Hills. Apparently the whole thing fascinated her, and she took on the role of den mother during the time she stayed there. Strauss wrote an interesting portrait of her.

Nancy Cunard (1896–1965) British shipping heiress turned avant-garde writer, activist and fan of big black cocks on dandy gentleman. Became mentally unstable, malnourished, and destitute in Paris. Found wandering the streets, weighing only 57 lbs at death.
Barbara Adèle de Kerchove de Denterghem, Belgian aristocrat, also died penniless and forgotten in Paris.
Paris seems to be a prime location to hit the skids.
Suzanne du Plessis-Bellière ended up homeless in Paris, scavenging for food, and died in utter destitution.

In Margot Kidder’s case it was mental illness. I think she was missing. Once they found her living on the streets, her daughter took her in, got mom back on her meds and thrived. She even did a coupke acting gigs. Shelly Duvall, mental illness too.

How does it happen? Poor business decisions. Spending money like your series will last 16 seasons. No guidance, especially for younger celebs. I think most of them come from unstable homes or podunk towns, they come to Hollywood cause they're goodlooking, and in some cases have talent, and they take a chance at becoming rich & famous. Some go unscathed, taking the waiter route. Then there are those who sell drugs and themselves to get by. The psychological scars remain even if they hit fame, hence all the drug and alcohol addictions.

The info about Suzanne de Bruc de Monplaisir, Marquise du Plessis-Bellière didn't sit right to me. Sure enough it is a hallucination by my PAID ChatGPT A.I.
The Marquise did spend time in prison (as she was a close associate of Nicolas Fouquet), but she died many years later in her Hôtel du Plessis-Bellière with her social standing intact.
Barbara Adèle de Kerchove de Denterghem is probably an A.I. hallucination as well.

Adam West used to speak of this. After Batman he couldn't get hardly work and was reduced to doing car shows and other public appearances just to pay the bills. Fast forward a few years, all his old childhood fans are now grown and in the entertainment business and now West has to turn work down cause he became so in demand.

That's true, Betty hit the skids big time. Wonder nobody has made her story into a movie yet.
Veronica Lake was working as a typist in Manhattan, I think. She was on the Dick Cavett Show and seemed ok. But she never really had a comeback.
Maggie MacNamara was a model who was chosen to play the Barbara Bel Geddes role in Otto Premiger's film of the hit play, The Moon is Blue ( I think Maggie had played it on the road, or something.) He other major films were Three Coins in the Fountain, and Prince of Players (doing Shakespeare with Richard Burton, as Booth). She did episodic TV. Hitchcock, Twilight Zone. Was married to director David Swift (The Parent Trap). She worked as a typist. Then after a long time no longer acting, she OD'ed.
I don't think Lake was working as a typist, it was McNamara.

Child actors have it the worst, since they're essentially taught an acting 'technique' that makes an adult career unrealistic, so unless they're uniquely talented like Jodie Foster or distinctively beautiful like Brooke Shields, they're sort of set-up to fail. I feel like that should be made more clear to them and many should be explicitly told to pursue another career path.

The idiom "hit the skids" meaning to begin to fail or decline rapidly, originates from the logging industry in the Pacific Northwest, where "skid road" referred to paths used to haul logs, and later evolved to describe areas where loggers spent their free time or lived when out of work.

R258, apparently everyone on that show despised the job. The puppeering made it harder to get the shots right, leading it long hours. There were lots of trap doors on set (for the puppet), and cast/crew could trip and fall into them. Also apparently the puppeteer was argumentative, and it was an overall unpleasant environment.
Maybe that contributed to his breakdown.
