Tasteful friends - dream home! Except its in Pittsburgh.
If I could pick this up and drop it in one of the fantastic locations I've seen some hideous carbuncles built on, I'd have the perfect home. The grounds are attractive too with the trees..... but Pittsburgh. Probably why its only 3 million despite the size (8 bed) and the great condition
The exterior is beautiful, but it is surpassed by one of the best interiors I have seen. The lounge is perfection, but it has strong competition from several other rooms in the house
Its.... not for everybody though. Your mileage may vary

Zillow listing has more pics, but says its only 7 bedrooms, still about four-five more than I'd need

FWIW that's a wonderful area of Pittsburgh and the house is steps away from a huge beautiful park. OTOH, they've been trying and failing to unload that place forever. It must have a lot of issues.

Agree with Sylvia. It's in the Highland Park area - I lived not far away on Bryant Street years ago and it's a lovely area, close to the city but the neighborhood itself feels like a very leafy old suburb.
This was ringing some distant bells in my head (that I'd heard of it before) and I did a search - this was in the local monthly magazine a few years ago. Not sure what "specific buyer" means.
Pittsburgh is in such a building spree right now I assume that few people want the house as is - they'd rather have the land.

You really have to commit to a house like that, the bathroom in slide 22 is something.
It must feel like living in a Henry James novel.
Also, I thought Pittsburgh was cute, a cozy Midwestern city like Cleveland.

The restoration on the house is amazing.

R6 It has its moments.....I think generally speaking Cleveland's a bit nicer and cozier - Pittsburgh has its charms but is also rough around the edges in the way that Baltimore is rough around the edges.

It’s one of these homes that a gay neurosurgeon lovingly restores just to be murdered and dragged into the attic.

Can I post twice? I am R6. The Zillow ad says it needs "No Work", with initial caps.
If I could float in with the entire decor intact, I would. Who doesn't want their own suit of armor display?

That is a real beauty! I could work with Pittsburgh. Don’t tell me this town ain’t got no heart, you just got to poke around

The last zillow photo shows that it has its own folly. Easily a B&B with those bathrooms and the covered solarium setup for breakfast. .

[quote]Also, I thought Pittsburgh was cute, a cozy Midwestern city like Cleveland.
It "kind of" is, R6. Pittsburgh is more expensive and a hub for tech, medicine and art. Cleveland is ... Cleveland. Things are cheaper and it is slightly more cozy. As R10 said, Pittsburgh is a bit rough around the edges thanks to its history as a major manufacturer of steel.
That house is less than 15 minutes away from Carnegie Mellon and not too far away from The Pittsburgh Zoo.

R9 Correct. I'm from NZ. And yes the restoration is stunning, its move in ready
R6/ R10 Pittsburgh is a rustbelt city isnt it? And the climate is... bloody cold in winter and hot and humid in summer. Thats why I thought a different location might be nicer for this stunner
Post as often as you like R13! And yeah, "If I could float in with the entire decor intact, I would." Same here. It'd be like living in a museum, and I'm there for that

I'm surprised there's no carriage house (at least not visible in the photos.) I'd offer to rent the carriage house from whichever Tasteful Friend buys the place; I'm very tidy.

I love the house -- but some of the decor I could live without.
I'm guessing that the problem with it is that it's a historical site so the buyer would be limited as to what s/he might change about it.
BTW, there are plenty of houses similar to this in PA, even a gorgeous one downtown in my hometown. It doesn't have the acreage, of course, but I'm a sucker for turrets. I wonder if it's ever been restored.

OP, it’s not really my thing, due to the furnishings, & some of the interior decor, however, this home is absolutely GORGEOUS!

R17 I believe thats what is called a "folly" - an ornamental building with no specific function as such, just there to be beautiful
R19 I wondered about the absence of a carriage house also - in that climate you'd want some form of garaging. Possibly one could be built in a style consistent with the home itself? I would want to do that if it were in Pittsburgh, and probably elsewhere too. And if I did somehow end up buying this beauty you'd be welcome to live in the house proper, its certainly big enough! And tidiness isnt a biggie for me
R20 this place has been restored according to the listing. It almost certainly is a historical site with limitations on what changes can be made, maybe including to the interior decor, could even be a requirement that all the original furnishings etc are retained. Personally for me that is not a problem because I'd want it exactly as it comes, I cant see a thing I'd want to change

Well if by "nicer and cozier" you mean you're far more likely to be murdered in Cleveland than in Pittsburgh, I'll agree with you.

I feel like we've seen this house before? Obviously they did an impressive job with restoration. It truly is beautiful.
However - it's a museum, not a home. I don't want to cosplay life in the 19th century.
They need to donate it to the city or something. Who wants to live like that? I feel like I'd need to grow mutton chops and wear a top hat and pocket watch.
They bought it 31 years ago for $150,000. It's been their life work. Unfortunately - times and tastes have changed. This house would have caused a divorce a long time ago.

They've tried to sell for a while now.

R33 - God - they really spared no expense. And buying all the period furniture with the marks and labels of the company at the time - that must have cost quite a bit in the 90s and 2000s when that market was at its peak.
I hope they really enjoy it - because they dumped millions into this. And now they're stuck. Very few people want to live like this.
They could have restored it and kept it somewhat modern - but they went with period everything. Again - great for a museum - but now nobody wants it, so what's the point?
But some of those ceilings are truly magnificent. Since it's a landmark house, I don't know how much you could actually change - probably not much.
