Mark Carney is Canada's next Prime Minister
Mark Carney, soon to become Canada's new prime minister, is a two-time central banker and crisis fighter about to face his biggest challenge of all: steering Canada through Donald Trump's tariffs.
The Liberals announced Carney as Justin Trudeau's successor on Sunday after party members voted in a nominating contest. Trudeau resigned in January, facing low approval ratings after nearly a decade in office.
The 59-year-old Carney is a political outsider who has never held office, which would in normal times have killed his candidacy in Canada. But distance from Trudeau and a high-profile banking career played to his advantage, and Carney argues he is the only person prepared to handle Trump.
"I know how to manage crises ... in a situation like this, you need experience in terms of crisis management, you need negotiating skills," Carney said during a leadership debate late last month.
Carney was born in Fort Smith in the remote Northwest Territories. He attended Harvard where he played college level ice hockey, starring as a goalkeeper.

Carney certainly won the Liberal Leadership by an impressive margin -- 85% of the vote, even bigger than Trudeau's 80% win in 2013. Carney has some potential but the Conservatives are already after him with attack ads. Carney has been getting good numbers in the polls, but it is a question of whether that will last through an election campaign.
Trudeau's numbers have started to go back up in recent weeks and veteran commentator Chantal Hébert said tonight that some people in the Liberal Party as well as some Canadians may actually have wanted Trudeau to stay on a bit longer given his strong performance against Trump recently.
Can Carney do better against Trump than Trudeau? There is no guarantee of that, but maybe he can. And who knows how Pierre Poilievre would do against Trump.

Someone said Chrystia Freeland is extremely well-respected within the Liberal caucus, but not well-liked. Trump and his people know her and despise her and they would take great pleasure in helping her fail. For the good of Canada, the country needs a leader with a fighting chance and this includes the possibility of a (somewhat) fresh start with Trump and perhaps the possibility of establishing some good will.

The Liberals have cut massively into the Conservatives poll lead over the past month with - 3 of the last 10 polls showing the Liberals with a lead, and 8 of the last 10 showing them within 10%
Carney can call the election at a time that suits him. I'd say the chances of the Conservatives winning an overall majority are evaporating very quickly. With the USA starting to implode economically over the other side of the border, it would not shock me if the Liberals pull out a win with a quick 'rally round the flag' election campaign.

Overall a spring election is probably in Carney's best interest. The Conservatives clearly haven't figured a message in a world without Trudeau and they'll only have a few weeks to scramble.
Of course it's not foolproof. You just never know what stunt Trump's going to pull next. There's always the risk of things going sideways with the trade war during the election campaign which could hurt the Liberals. But then again that risk will always be there as long as Trump is in office.

The Leger poll also has the Liberals and Conservatives tied nationally. Their previous poll 8 days ago had the Conservatives +13.

I hope the democratic/labour party in Canada keep this up.
Canada buys more products from America than all the UK countries, France, Japan and China, COMBINED. They have removed many, many American products from shelves and put "American made" stickers on any American products that they do leave on the shelves. They're basically boycotting America. The Canadians are not only fighting back, they're also targeting republican states. I don't know if everyone can access Instagram, so I typed it out.
A reporter asked a Canadian politician if they will put back American products on the shelves
Um, no, the products stay off the shelf, they are not going back on the shelf until the threat is gone. And even AFTER the threat is gone, we will redouble our efforts to diversify our markets so we are never in this position again. We will redouble our efforts on republican states and their products because we KNOW who's doing this to us, who is enabling the president to attack us and it is the republican politicians who are standing by silently as companies in their jurisdictions of people that they swore to represent are hurt by these tariffs as the people who live in these communities that they swore to represent face more expensive homes, gas, electricity and products on the shelf, including food - after campaigning that they were going to lower costs.
So we're sending a message to those allies of the president, WE SEE YOU. We know YOU'RE the one's doing this to us. Stand up for your constituents, deliver a message to your president, these tariffs hurt everybody and if they do that, he will stop the tariffs and then we can all move on to a better place of being able to trying to re-establish some type of normalcy in our relationship at a political level.

R59 & R60, if there's one thing we've learned around here, it's not to get overconfident about an election result before it has actually happened.
Yes, the Liberal Party is doing well at the moment. However, the Conservative Party are spending millions on attack ads against Carney right now and he is still new to the campaign trail. He doesn't have Trudeau's natural abilities on the trail as he comes from a banking background, but perhaps he is slowly getting warmed up.
If the Liberals can keeping doing well in the polls in Atlantic Canada, Québec & Ontario, then yes, they could win the most seats.
Btw, the Conservatives have just ticked off the Canadian press. I noticed on Chantal Hébert's twitter feed tonight that a lot of Canadian journalists are angry with the Conservative Party's decision to not allow journalists to travel on the Conservative Party plane (or buses) during the upcoming election.

There are also times where PP just flat out lies. He tried to blame Justin Trudeau for every problem on the planet. He even tried to blame Trudeau when that car exploded rushing through the security checkpoint near the US-Canada border in New York state in November 2023. It had absolutely nothing to do with Trudeau and when the Canadian press caught PP in his lies, he then tried to attack them, too.

R66, the Liberals are ahead in the current seat projection models of both Eric Grenier (CBC) and Philippe Fournier (338) at the moment, but sure, the Conservatives still have a good shot at winning because of the head start they had in fundraising and number of candidates nominated across the country.
As for Trudeau, yes, he probably should have stepped down earlier, but he ended up going out on a strong note with improved approval ratings for his handling of the Trump tariff threats. So Trudeau has not been as much of a liability for the Liberals lately. The Nanos poll said Trudeau got a 12-month high recently and a large majority of Quebecers gave Trudeau positive approval in the recent Leger poll on the issue of the Trump tariffs.
Anyway, the news is that Carney is going to see the Governor General on Sunday to call for an Election to take place on either April 28 or May 5.

Monday, April 28th, R106.
Although advance voting will start a week or so before that.
The TV debates will be next week.
Carney and the Liberals will want to maintain the momentum.

[quote]It could improve if a Democrat wins the White House in 2028
It can't be repaired even with a Democrat in the White House. The stability is gone and seems to be supported by a lot of Americans - that's the message the US is sending out around the world. The damage is done and by the time a Democrat is in the White House - nothing much of "before Trump" will exist to salvage. It will be too late by then and no ally could ever trust that another Republican White House wouldn't just revoke everything and invade the next time. The Trump administration is fundamentally changing the direction of the US. Allies are really pissed off and are making other plans for alternative markets and allies. This is going to be a difficult time for all.

R105 a good summary in this linked article.
Also, from the more 'left' wing of the Conservatives, Ontario premier, Doug Ford, has been conspicuously quiet all through the campaign in lending backing to Pollievre - and has been vocal in backing Trudeau, and then Carney, on the Canadian 'unity' against Trump bandwagon.

R110, thanks for the link. Yeah, I heard Doug Ford was lukewarm in his support of Pierre Poilievre. Prominent political commentator Chantal Hébert made a note of that on her Twitter account earlier this month.
The comments by former Reform Party leader Preston Manning about Western separation probably don't help Poilievre either.
If the polls & seat projections are accurate, the Liberals are still in Majority Government territory right now. (seat projection linked below)
The only thing that could hurt Carney's momentum will be if he has a bad TV debate next week. If he can pass that test, he should be okay until Election Day.

I voted early this weekend since I'm leaving for Europe tomorrow. Talking to a colleague from work, I realized there'll be quite a few of us who are generally NDP voters but will vote Liberal in this election - this election is too important to FAFO and give the Conservatives the mandate. As one Green voter said on Bluesky: I'm voting for the Liberals so that, in the future, I can vote for the Greens again.

The first Leaders' Debate took place earlier tonight. This was the French debate and tomorrow night is the English debate. Anyone else here watch it?
The consensus among the political analysts on CBC seems to be that Mark Carney performed better in French than expected and didn't make any major mistakes.
Renowned political commentator Chantal Hébert said that tonight's French debate is not likely to change the trend in Québec, so that is probably good news for Carney in terms of winning a good amount of seats in Québec, where he is ahead in the polls at the moment.

Let Pierre Polyester keep praising far right outlets such as Rebel Media and True North. Is he really that stupid to think that's the winning strategy in the current political climate in Canada?

I hate to say it but Pierre Poilievre is kind of hot. I’m still voting liberal though.

R115, what did Pierre say about Rebel Media & True North? Was this after the debates. I heard the political panel on CBC criticize the Elections Debate Commission for allowing those far-right journalists to attend the Q&A session.
R116, Poilievre is slightly less creepy looking now that he has stopped wearing glasses, but he is still a slimeball.

The CBC political panel said last night that Poilievre had a pretty good night in the English debate. It could lead to a tightening of the race going into the final week before Election Day.
We will have to see what the polls show after Easter Weekend. Hopefully it won't help the Conservatives very much.

338 Canada (Philippe Fournier) has the Liberal lead at 5.0 points and a projection of 188 seats (Majority Government).

R134, anything is possible in Elections these days, but a Conservative win would be surprising based on the available numbers.
The Liberal lead over the Conservatives has narrowed, but the Liberals are still projected to win by far the most seats according to the 2 major Seat Projection models by Eric Grenier and Phillippe Fournier. The Liberals are still in Majority territory in both models.
Carney took some heat today from the Canadian press for coming across as evasive on the exact nature of his phone call with Trump in mid-March. It is possible that the Liberals could lose their chance of a Majority and only win a Minority.

Not a chance, they’re well behind in Ontario and Quebec and cannot win even a minority without leading in at least one of those two provinces.

Sending good vibes from Australia. We have a federal election in 2 weeks ourselves. Trump has taken a major toll on the conservatives here so we are looking at returning our current centre left government.
Good luck Canada and hope that Carney wins. I've seen him interviewed at length in a couple of podcasts and was very impressed. I'd like to see much closer relations between our two countries.
I worry he's not joking R139. It's impossible to know.

Polymarket - which closely predicted the outcome of the US election is now giving Carney an 80+% probability of winning a majority, and the CBC poll tracker has the Liberals 3.7% ahead - translating to an 18-seat absolute majority.
I think something dramatic would have to happen over the weekend to significantly change this. I can't see it happening.

R149, it would be great if PP lost his own riding in Carleton, but we may not get that lucky. PP is fortunate that his riding is located mainly in a rural part of Ottawa and that he doesn't have to run in an urban area or suburb where he would face a high likelihood of loss.
R151, is Neil Drabkin still around? I remember him running 30 years ago. He must be getting old by now. I don't think he's ever succeeded in getting elected to Parliament. (Btw, the Federal PC Party no longer exists -- they took the Progressive part out in 2003).

R148 Here you go:
Conservatives in Canada started disliking Mark Carney a few weeks ago when most heard his name for the first time. I started disliking Pierre Pollievre around 2005 when I learned a guy who had never had a job before became a MP. I started disliking Pierre when my friends at foreign affairs told me about a man so insufferable he was being avoided everywhere. I started disliking Pierre when I dated a top staffer of a Conservative Cabinet minister around 2012-13 that told me about how people would go out of their way to make sure they didn’t invite him to events.
And now I dislike Pierre for not stepping up to the moment. For going on a podcast listened to by millions of Trump supporters and calling Canadians stupid and appeasing Trump’s aggression. The Cons last leader, Erin Otoole had honour. Pierre has always lacked that.
